could sudden cold weather make camera freeze

by FpLiOnYkD - 1/23/07 10:20 AM

I have a kodak easy share CX7525 digital camera. I live in the desert Southwest an we had snow this morning which is very unusual. I took a walk to take pictures and after a while, my camera would freeze and not work. You could turn it off, then it would work for a shorttime, then freeze again. Upon arriving home, my neighbor said her camera was doing the same thing. Could this be the sudden, cold dampness? Is it the battery or the camera that has the problem? Thanks for any info.

I'd be looking at....

the battery(s). Same for your neighbor. When you took your camera outside you subjected it to a sudden onslaught of cold condensation as well as cold temperature. Batteries don't like either, especially at the same time. New batteries should resolve your problem.

and life goes on...

Thanks, after recharging the battery and also trying another battery, all is well. When we get our next snow in 7 years, I will take extra batteries with me.

Camera stops working

If you're using a Li-on battery in your camera then it won't like cold temperatures. I recently had a similar experience and had to put the camera inside my coat and under my armpit to keep it warm enough for it to work.

Li-ion Batteries don't like cold

My wife and I had the same problem with our cell phones recently when we left both of them in the car for an hour while the outside temperature was 10-F. It surprised me for a moment, but since both had shut off I quickly realized the problem. Sure enough, they came back to life when they warmed up. I'm surprised that we don't hear more about this with regard to cell phones and MP3 players, those few that aren't permanently attached to a warm body.

Snowboarding in Colorado and camera batteries

by mattjenna - 1/29/07 6:23 PM In reply to: yes,i think so by chengming_kuang

I just came back from a 2 week trip to Colorado snowboarding (from a Sydney, Australia summer) and was using a Canon S80 with new battery. I found that it was so cold that even keeping the camera in my inside coat pocket it would cease to function after 3-4 photos. Very frustrating-there was no way around it since the temps we so low (between 10F to minus 15F). Coming from a very warm climate, I've never experienced that before. My Motorola V3X didn't freeze up in the same conditions-including being left in the car whilst on the mountain (no Cingular coverage-sucked).

Apparently Olympus is bringing out a new point and shoot Stylus 770SW that is operational down to 10F. Not sure how they get around the cold battery issue.

Apparently it's a common problem with all batterine (particularly LiOn at low temps).

i think that AA nimh batteries are better then lithium.

i try 3 cameras and my last one or the 2 last ones said in their manuels to keep batteries warm in your pocket for better results.
