I have a PS3 connected to a Pioneer VSX-84TXSi receiver through HDMI, which outputs through HDMI to a Sony VPL-VW100 front projector. All my PS3 games work perfectly in 1080p, except for Call of Duty 3.
When I start it I can see graphics on the PS3 games menu showing its reading the game. However, when I get into it the screen turns completely green. It still has audio and I can still control the game, even though I can't see anything.
If I plug the HDMI cable directly from the PS3 to the projector it works perfectly, and if I connect the PS3 to the receiver using component cables it works perfectly.
What could the receiver be doing that's not allowing this particular game to be displayed with an HDMI cable? More importantly, what can I do about it?
About a year back, Secrets of Home High Fidelity tested several good brands as to HDMI or component connections producing better results. The results were around 50/50. Reason - makers' implementation has been marginal.
Of course your one particular game might be at fault. However, I'd bet some small money on bad implementation. The Pioneer isn't handling it well in HDMI mode. No overpoweering need to replace it. Just use what wires work.
If you can demand satisfaction of the Pioneer by means of factory warranty, go for it. Not a problem confined to Pioneer as half of the tested components had poor HDMI results.
I can see a big difference in quality between component and HDMI, and I don't want to have to switch each time I want to play Call of Duty 3. I haven't had much luck when calling tech support, as they always blame one problem on other companies or parts (ex its the PS3's fault, the game's fault, the cable's fault, some copy protection technical stuff's fault, etc). What exactly should I say?
I would love to return this receiver for a refund under the facotry warranty, as it also doesn't work with the cable box I just got for HD.
