MOTOROMING /A1200 Availability in N/A with English Interface

by adnanspzafar - 8/10/06 9:07 AM

Hi everyone...

I'm Cyrus and this is my first entry. Well, what made me reach out the oh-so-well informed blog community of Cnet.com was the desire for the Motorola Ming/A1200, that is irritatingly only available in the Hong Kong market.

I've looked at a few of the scarce reviews available online and so far things look good. However, I've heard from more than one user about the annoyance of not being able to recognize some of the Chinese instructions, etc. As such, the full potential of the phone is often no realized in light of the language difficulty for someone who can not read Chinese.

However, I have also seem a few pictures and videos on YouTube of the Motorola Ming with english OS...

My question to any kind soul who has the Ming or knows the answer is: Can the Ming be fully operational in English only (I know it seems like a silly question, but the question is worth $500)?

Another aspect that has been bothersome is that Motorola hasn't inlucluded SW that is fully compatible with N/A PCs...that is, as some owners have complained, the SE does not allow for full integration of the Ming with a PC. Is this true? Is there a remidy to this?

I've also heard that the Ming is yet to make an official debut in the N/A market, with updated SW for the N/A market and full English-based OS...Again, true or not?

In a net shell, I want to know whether it is better to buy an overseas model and tweak it (such as the languate) or wait for, like ten years, till Motorola decides to bring the A1200 in N/A (I highly doubt that)

Anyone with the answers, your assistance will be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Cyrus

I actually don't sync anything. I just use bluetooth to transfer stuff from phone to phone. I think the handwriting recognition could be better.

Not Totally True

I currently have the A1200 and the phone is great, my carrier is Cingular and reception is great. You can buy the phone for about $250.00-$300.00 based upon upgrading phone or account from a mom & pop cell store based upon upgrading phone or account, but if you upgrading your account it be a boost in price $300 smacks. The package comes with two manuals English & Asian, USB earpiece, h-charger, and 128MB micro mem card which you can upgrade to an 2Gig for $99.00 or less thru the web: Sandisk. One problem I'm having is internet access, now that's an issue!

Ming operates in English and still a great phone!

by izzyinchicago - 1/23/07 10:23 AM In reply to: MOTOROMING /A1200 Availability in N/A with English Interface by adnanspzafar

Hi Cyrus -- Ming phone operates in English and there are english language manuals floating around the internet.
I sync up my phone with my laptop for address books and outlook meeting calendar items. Sometimes I can get the Phone tools application to do it via Bluetooth, and sometimes via the Mini USB port cable, but sometimes my laptop does not recognize the phone at all, so I put it away and try again another time :-(

I also heard from well placed contacts within M*****la that while the Ming has been available since January 2006 in China, there were no plans to bring it to the US because of the concern that the NA population won't accept touchpad keyboards. We will see if the IPhone runs into that same issue.
I wrote up a fairly detailed review of the A1200 (on CNET) and reiterate: It is the best of a large number of phones I have tried and further: "I would cry like a baby if I lost it".

Change to English settings

Go into your applications then setup then language (if its in Chinese it should be the 5th one down under the text size where you use your touch screen to change it. Change that to English, then back out of that and go down to Input Setup (which is the 3rd down from your Language) and pick English for both your first and second language. Hope this helps.

Bnilloc...Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
Just received a Ming A1200 yesterday...we couldn't figure out HOW
to change the language from Chinese to English...then I thought about 'Cnet forums.'
The information you gave was super!
(Especially explaining about the 5th one down).
Your help was very much appreciated!
