Ex7

by Mankarlen - 1/14/07 5:36 AM In reply to: Technically better but ........ by Iowarth

How much of this is a just a dislike of microsoft. I had firefox put on my computer by a tech and got rid of it. Once you get used to Ex7 it is alot better than 6.

...but nothing.

by Ryo Hazuki - 1/17/07 3:20 PM In reply to: Technically better but ........ by Iowarth

I would agree with you on the part of IE6 being clumsy and unstable but to call it slow is calling all other browsers super-slow or something like that (either that or you had your computed infected). Saying you were prepared to give Microsoft a chance and then bash IE 7 like you do is one of the most incoherent things I've read recently, since any unbiased person agrees that IE 7 is at least a good browser. I shouldn't bother either with correcting biased opinions of people like you, but anyway. Yes, you're right, it is faster (slightly) and more stable (not totally - as no browser is - but much more than IE 6). Apart from that it has many other pros (like security, just to name one) and yet you loath it (why am I not surprised that you do?).
What is the problem of defaulting to a icon only view, are you blind or have mental problems to recognize symbols or are you too dumb to change the settings? Interesting you say that many people don't like icons in isolation because that is the absolute first time I hear anyone criticising that - in fact, it's not Microsoft's fault that you are too dumb to understand what the icons mean (I do and I'm sure most people do too). Again, I disagree with you when you say things look horrible without the meny but, once again too, you can set it to be visible all the time (as I did, for reasons other than looks) so you're argument is ridiculous when you have the option to put it like you like. (and I won't mention either how dumb you have to be to take more than 15 seconds to find out how to do that or to look in the help file how to do it)
Better than IE6? Definitely, much better. Better than Firefox? Absolutely. And on one hand you say you hope it's not true that IE7 is forcing non-compliant websites off the web (leaving any human being with a brain to conclude you don't think it's important for a website to be compliant). On the other hand, you say that would be Microsoft's dream and criticise IE7 for not being totally WWC compliant (so being compliant is just important if/when a Microsoft's product fails the complaince test, did I get it right?) - for your information Firefox is not WWC compliant either. So if you think non-compliant websites have good content and that is the really important factor, why is it so important for IE7 to be totally WWC compliant, could you please decide yourself once and for all and start making sense?
Finally, resources, yes. Your numbers are very interesting given a quick check on my P4 3.06GHz with 1.3 GB RAM shows IE7 38652kb and that number almost never passes the 100000kb mark, while I recall when I used Firefox 2 for a short period of time when it was released some months ago it would quickly raise to the 200000kb (yes, 200000kb) mark after about 15 minutes of use, something my friends (who use Firefox 2) confirm happens to them too. Yet more ignorance regarding Microsoft products, it would seem too.
So, for starters, I think it's a little hard to "roll back to IE7", as you say, but for me no hyped Firefox thank you, because, I will keep using IE 7 mainly because (unlike Firefox 2) renders every page I visit perfectly, doesn't use 200MB of my RAM after just 15 minutes and, last but not least, *is secure*.

Internet Explorer 7

by wabash2552 - 1/12/07 2:09 AM In reply to: Do you use Internet Explorer 7? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I installed it and had nothing but trouble...couldn't get anything to work right so it didn't take me long to take that thing out.

Must Agree with the NON Users of IE7....

by Nanci252 - 1/12/07 1:23 PM In reply to: Internet Explorer 7 by wabash2552

First, the "look" is terrible for me. Guess I'm stuck in "habits"....and I love WindowBlinds - so it's not just the look, but design as well. The disappearing menus as well.....if I'd have been patient enough to even search for the return of the menu I may have tried it more than a day ! I use a widescreen flat panel with very high resolution and IE7 messed with that so terribly I was furious I couldn't sit and play a bunch of games at Pogo.com without reverting all my screen settings to "deal with" the IE7 modifications !
And the tabbed browsing ? What the?....
What was wrong with the nested taskbar design ? duh.

Second. The WAY it gets "pushed" on you by way of WindowsUpdate....as tho it were a Critical Update !! I saw it is listed in optional under software updates - but when I did WU last week - there it was again - Trying to Sneak into the Download area even after I had purposely UNChecked it's "pick me" box - indicating I didn't WANT to download it - when the gray popup opened and began downloading - THERE IT WAS !! I canceled the download, started over (cleared cookies and temp files, did a thorough Disk Cleanup, emptied Recycle, Cleared History - even cleared recently viewed documents, etc. and rebooted).....
Went back to WU, "custom" and once again it showed up even after being chosen to NOT install at this time.....and I simply did the add/remove once the install screen was complete ! Then, restarted . Haven't seen it since. Altho, it still tries to incorporate itself when I do WU.

I'm one of those who will not put Automatic Updates "ON" until the dead last minute that they force us to, in order to get the updates....Just this reason...they push items on you that are not needed, and for some of the family - who never use remote assistance, smart cards, etc......too many of these updates just fill up the system to no useful end for the home / family users I have to do repairs for !! I always tell them to READ what the screen says BEFORE clicking the "do it" button - but have found that later in a few months they are calling to ask why they have so little space left (with NO good files added to their knowledge ...ie. photos, music, video etc.) and machine runs slower than they were use to ...
Upon inspection....there's 14 or 15 WU files that have no useful purpose for them - and I delete 'em off, clean them up and it's right back to what they want.
So why does MS feel that forcing folks to "think" the updates are Neccessary is a Good Plan ?

FYI.....Belarc Advisor gives a supreme set of security definitions within the use of their program and I feel quite safe running anywhere (except porn sites, of course)....on the internet without a virus (knock wood) in over 4 (four) YEARS !! And we run three units here at home (one wireless, too), and none have "caught" anything in a very very long time.

Rant Over. LOL

Interesting.

by Ed-duh-win - 1/14/07 2:06 AM In reply to: Must Agree with the NON Users of IE7.... by Nanci252

Hmm, interesting. My school found a way to stop the download from happening, somehow.

May I suggest this to you and other non-IE users: just have it on your PC to have things work correctly, and for Windows Update; for daily browsing use Firefox or whatever you feel like. Firefox has the option to turn it to the default browser so it shouldn't hurt you too bad.

IE 6.0 , 7.0 vs Fire Fox etc

by Gatorelf - 1/15/07 6:29 AM In reply to: Internet Explorer 7 by wabash2552

I keep seeing that you guys post IE is unstable ? Why have I never had a problem? explain unstable for me please. The only time I ever loose anything on my computer is if the battery dies on me...and who's fault is that .. soon as I plug it up I have everything right back.. 6.0 is a very reliable easy to use browser, 7.0 which I have been using since it came out is just as easy and has a couple extra features like the tab windows.. Its ok and I use it when working, the best part is I have the option of new window or tabbed window. If your IE is unstable you have other problems (Add ware maybe). as far as fire fox from my group of friends its like the old AOL browser, like adding a virus to your computer. add ware out the ying yang they say.

updated to IE 7 and now cant use my computer at all..

by BungalowMo - 1/12/07 2:47 AM In reply to: Do you use Internet Explorer 7? by Marc Bennett Moderator

As the title of my post suggests, I have very recently upgraded to IE7 and as I was going out after, didnt restart but instead just closed down when the update was finished. Since restarting the computer it appears to start but then only shows my desktop picture and the mouse pointer, no task bar or start button, nothing else on the screen at all! I have tried restarting it several times with the same result. I have an HP Pavillion a210a, running XP, but do not have an XP cd as it was not provided by the large company where I bought the computer at the time of purchase, however I do have the 8 backup discs that I was required to create. If anyone has any suggestions PLEASE HELP!

Problems after installing IE7

by MissT9957 - 1/12/07 5:40 AM In reply to: updated to IE 7 and now cant use my computer at all.. by BungalowMo

I lost all of my Explorer links and had to create a link in a document to get back on the net after installing IE7 and a coworker had the same problem on our home systems.
We're now having problems with our database system crashing on certain screens that reference web sites. Microsoft is apparently well aware of the problems this monster is causing because they now have a support number that will be in operation until at least November.
The support number is 866-234-6020 and bring your patience. If your system did not come with a receovery disk and you never made your initial backup of the system they may eventually send you an installation disk to reinstall XP. Doing a complete clean installation was the only answer in some cases.

IE7

by nomadd74 - 1/13/07 10:58 PM In reply to: Problems after installing IE7 by MissT9957

No, I do not like IE7, to commence with I find it difficult to copy and paste now, which was a breeze with IE6. Trying hard to perservere with IE7, but will probably changeover to another outfit.

To Can't use machine at all.....now.....

by Nanci252 - 1/12/07 1:39 PM In reply to: updated to IE 7 and now cant use my computer at all.. by BungalowMo

When your computer is first turned on, be ready to press F8 (boot modes) once the HP/Compaq/ Logo screen is shown.....You should see a small note in corner indicating entering a "Function mode" (similar to Bios F2) and select SAFE MODE, or if you don't feel confident, use LAST GOOD CONFIG....

Safe Mode will allow you to reach a modified desktop screen, where you can access MY COMPUTER > Add/Remove Programs or System Restore.
LAST Good config "should" be tried FIRST.....as, you were working normally before the download ? right? XP creates restore points regularly and can recover itself back to BEFORE the download.
If you wish to pursue this, please check my profile and email me. Good luck.

You want to avoid trying to reinstall Until you have tried to first bring the patient back by simpler means !! Those pre-made backups (you said 8 disks?) are only as good as the date & time you made them. If that was 10mos. ago....you'll be restored to THAT time parameter....and missing 10mos. of saved data.

Mail access in IE7

by malc51 - 1/12/07 4:19 AM In reply to: IE7 by NeonDevil

I use hotmail and when I changed from IE6 to IE7, I said the same thing, "how do I get into my mail"?.
As I wanted to get into my mail 'now' and not wait until I had got used to the new layout of IE7, I first did this.....

1)...typed in 'Hotmail.com' in my search bar...opened up the signing in page...then added that page to my favourites. So next time I wanted to sign in to my mail account, I just followed the link from my favourites.

Next, I then set about finding out how the new layout works and found how to add a 'mail' link to my tool bar...like this...

2)...left click on 'Tools'...left click on 'Toolbar'...left click on 'Customize'...in the left handside, highlight 'Mail' and left click on 'Add'...you will now have an 'envelope' icon on your task bar to access your default mail account.

Malc.
