Recording Analog Video to Computer

by Bubbapuck - 12/5/04 10:11 PM

I am an absolute newbie at this... and a pretty stupid one at that! I have a laptop with an S-Video connection and a SONY analog camcorder that also has an S-Video connection. I have connected the two with an S-Video cable. Is this all I have to do to get this to work? My computer is not detecting the video device. If I have an S-Video connection does that mean I have a video capture device?

No. You need a capture card or analog-to-digital converter. Your S-Video from the camera will plug into the capture device or converter. That's for video only. You will also need to connect your camera's audio-out to the capture card or converter. Then the capture device/converter will connect to your PC using IEEE 1394 "firewire" or USB 2. (Firewire is best.)

You need to check with Sony or your local dealer.

The s-video input, if that's what it really is, is probably connected to the video card. If it is, then it must have software or hardware to convert the analog signal to a digital form. It could then, most likely, function as a capture device. Sony, etc. will have to advise you on what is needed.

Most digital video cameras that have firewire ( IEEE1394 ) connector can be used as an
Analog capture device. Just hook the video and audio outputs from you vcr to the video
And audio connectors on your digital camera and connect the firewire cable to you PC.
You will probably have to change a setting on the camera setup screen to do this, check
your owner's manual. Also it may be possible to convert the edited video back to analog
And record back to the vcr by changing the setting on the camera. I have a Sony D8 camera and this works great.John

Analog video to digital with firewire

by cellanime - 1/12/07 8:48 PM In reply to: Recording Analog Video to Computer by jcrobso

OK, running analog thru digital camera is an effective way to capture and digitize with firewire.
Unfortunately, my Panasonic DV camera doesn't have input settings. OK.
Seems that firewire is better then usb, so can anyone recommend a decent device that I can plug in analog cam (using RCA or S-connecter) and send it into pc with firewire? I have a Pinnacle one that does that via usb but would rather use firewire. I think what I'm looking for goes for about $150. and up.

Thanks for all suggestions!

Problems with recording analog video using a firewire

by seasidedr - 3/29/07 12:25 PM In reply to: Recording Analog Video to Computer by jcrobso

I have a Panasonic camcorder (model number- Panasonic PV-GS200) that I use to digitize my analog signals from equipment such as DVD players, vcr's or an old analog 8mm camcorder. Digitizing this way does truly improve the quality of the video files immensely. My problem is all of the capture software that I have sends a play signal to the camera which starts the camera playing. What I need is some software that does not send the play command, just records what it sees at the end if the firewire. One of the programs that I use will allow me to look at the signal coming in from the analog source and put the camera in the record mode which records the signal onto the DV tape. The computer program then records the analog signal as the DV tape is being recorded on to. This limits the time you can record and you better not want the information on the tape. Just wondered if there was a work around this problem.
