Help no IP info and computer lost connection

by k6lw - 1/11/07 8:38 AM

My girlfriends Dell laptop running windows XP has recently stopped connecting to our network or the internet. We have an internal ethernet card. I ran our connection diagnostic which said the cable was unplugged which it wasn't, and I called and troubleshot the issue with our DSL provider who said the tcp/ip was corrupted and to contact the manufacturer.

When I go into the command prompt and type ipconfig, the next line down will say windows ip configuration and then there is a big blank space and the next prompt appears below it.

This all happened after we installed a wireless card in the laptop, which worked for a few days then the cable connection and the wireless stoped working. All the devices claim to be working fine.

What can I do to fix this. Thank you for any help.

System Restore

Thanks for your response.

I tried to do a system restore but for every restore point it has saved(up to a month ago) it would go through every step until it restarted and then I would get a message that it could not restore to the restore point selected.

I down loaded some IP repair program also but that didn't help.

Any suggestions?

Try SAFE MODE and restore in safe mode.

Sadly since system restore is out of commission we may be seeing a damaged OS. Not unheard of today with all the pests we are seeing. Repairing this OS on HP can be dangerous to the files on the hard disk so make sure you are ready for a wipe and reinstall.

system restore in safe mode

by k6lw - 1/11/07 3:40 PM In reply to: Try SAFE MODE and restore in safe mode. by R. Proffitt Moderator

I booted into safe mode. The good news is I was able to complete a system restore. The bad news is when I tried last time I had restore points in Dec. before the problem occured, now the oldest point was Jan 4th. I did the restore anyway, but I'm having the same issues.

Is my only option now backing up my HD and trying to do a OS repair or format? Thanks for your help.

Sorry about the typo.

I whipped out the reply too fast and mixed up the maker.

Since system restore failed I would boot PCLINUXOS and see if that works. I'll share a long discussion where we were trying to find out if it was bad hardware or something in the OS regarding a network problem. The missing output from the command is troubling so I'd boot an alternative OS to test the hardware.

Read http://forums.cnet.com/5208-7589_102-0.html?forumID=62&threadID=226533&messageID=2363986

In the end we found the hardware to be OK but something busted in XP.

Also after rebooting we have been getting a RunDLL Error for Newdot~2.dll could that be related? Thanks again.

Isn't that a SPYWARE item?

Pests like those hijack the winsock.

I'll suggest scans with Free AVG AntiSpyware then run WINSOCKXPFIX
