Porting apps

by frankroh - 1/10/07 9:04 AM In reply to: aaww c'mon...don't be a party pooper by blrhead

You make it sound like porting apps to mobile devices is easy. It's not even if we are talking about refactoring. Sure some functionality objects could be reused but the UI limitations require rewrite of everything on the front end and majority of the back end. Pixel limitations, handling graphic objects, handling errors/exceptions...

The UI and the hardware looks slick, but I hope it will be discounted from its $600 price tag. Apple known for forcing partners and retailers from discounting their products. Will this be the case for the iPhones? As others have mentioned, it would be an easy call for me to live with a basically free Blackjack ($10 on web retailers) and buy me a PS3.

Try OS X and you will see why!

by CoolDudeCR - 1/10/07 8:44 AM In reply to: Its just a phone..... by Ed-duh-win

what good is a full-fledged Mac OS X on a phone??? It looks like you have never used OS X... I've been a DOS/Windows/Linux user for the last 15 years, and I swithched to OS X last april 2006... I can tell you this on my personal experience: Apple success is not just based on marketing, their products deliver what they promised and even more. The laptop I own, not only has the most georgeus, slick and well integrated interface in the market today and for years to come, but also is a powerful unix based OS who let's you perform all those tasks (speaking for myself) that ussually requires 3rd party applications on Windows (remote X-sessions, encriped terminal sessions, complex scripting, etc...). My laptop has been working non stop for 47 days, 17 hours and 50 minutes, I just close the lid at night and open it back again in the morning with a non-degraded performance (That's something amazing for me who use to have a Windows XP based laptop... you cannot do this with windows... after a couple of days you HAVE TO restart the darn thing or suffer below average performance on your equipment). Check it out... give OS X a try and you will see...

Buddy I agree with you 200%

by rashidtem - 1/10/07 4:56 PM In reply to: Try OS X and you will see why! by CoolDudeCR

I'm a OS X user for past 4 years before I was another PC guy. Since I started to use OS X, I can't figure out why in the world people make their lives hell by using Windows. OS X, is THE MOST STABLE OS out there. I"ve a Power Mac G4 bought 4 years ago still doing its job as good as first day. I do everything on it, its not dedicated to one task. I surf web, play games, edit tons of video and almost every day burn few complex DVDs. It came with only 80 gigs, now, internally i have 520 gigs and 2 external 320 gigs hard drive attach most of the time. I only upgraded my DVD writer once cuz i wanted to get dual layer support and added only 256 RAM once so total Ram is 512 MB only. Never had any problem with it.

Wrong, I have used them

by Ed-duh-win - 1/10/07 6:38 PM In reply to: Try OS X and you will see why! by CoolDudeCR

As the title says, I have used them. Involuntarily, that is. My school only has Mac OS Xs. They are slower than the slowest sloths, which they are extremely slow. No kidding. Took me 20 freakin' minutes to simply login to my account, open Word and print off my document for school. 20 FREAKIN' MINUTES! That's unacceptable.

Now you might say that it's slow because its connected to the schoolwide network therefore the number of computers running is slowing it down. Wrong. We hove the Powerbook laptops...slow as hell as well. The same steps above took about 15 minutes, which isn't better by a whole lot. And the laptop was operating independently, not connected to any of the school networks.

How does that sound? Scrolling pages on Safari inadvertedly summons the cursor I call "stupid rainbow" because it keeps spinning like an idiot.

Just a phone?

by bd1886 - 1/10/07 1:02 AM In reply to: The iPhone is here at last. What feature stands out for you? by Marc Bennett Moderator

That's short sighted I think. Us Americans are just slower at using a handheld anything than other "Tech Countries". This thing initiates a whole new quality and convenience of communication. We were working with just a bunch of "pieces parts" before this thing! Lots of people are going to have... "just a nice phone" (when they buy this). Others will have a lot more.

Another phone that will be obsolete in 8 months

by frankroh - 1/10/07 1:05 AM In reply to: The iPhone is here at last. What feature stands out for you? by Marc Bennett Moderator

- First off, it's an EDGE not UMTS device. Bad!! I can't believe Apple didn't go 3G and 2.5G.
- $600? Bad. I could rather live with a BlackJack (which can be had for free) and buy me a PS3. I sure hope Cingular adds some rebate on the phone.
- The big screen is nice but it will eat battery like there's no tomorrow (BT and Wi-Fi will make it even worse.)
- You won't be casually putting this thing in a pocket in fear of scratching/cracking the screen. People need phones that can handle drops, being stuffed in a pants pocket, and whatever abuse people put on their phones.
- Cammera is nice but it's still CMOS based. What happened to 3Megapixel that was rumored?
- UI is pretty dang cool but in the end, all I care about is a phone with a clear sound, good coverage, and long battery life. If iPhones can deliver just those three, I'll but it for $600. But I ain't holding my breath.

Let's face it...

by streetlam - 1/10/07 4:10 AM In reply to: Another phone that will be obsolete in 8 months by frankroh

When I finally got my w800i last year... I thought, "OMG, the best phone ever!"... but then... all those extras fell short. Why? I don't use the 2 megapixel camera that much (why iPhone is using a 2MP too, is beyond me). As for it's walkman capabilities... doesn't impress me much, either... I've never even filled up the 512MB... I don't see the point... since that will eat my batterie life. So now... we have an OS and a iPod... will that mix out together that well? I don't think so... people won't use those features as much... altough... I won't be surprise if that thing causes accidents on the road, with ppl that care much about their appliances more than the road ahead. And that 600 dlls prince range... it's just too much... maybe next year I'll buy another brand with the same or more options (since G3 isn't available in my country... at least with my service provider)... or even the same thing. Why? My w800 has the same functions... (granted, not as fancy... but hey... it plays MP3, and has expandable memory... with the same 2MP camera... with BT and WI-FI, as well)... well it doesn't get like two or more things... but those things (the OS, and something I must be passing by) won't cut it for me (for that matter, I do have a PC... and I can't stand typing on small keyboards... or worse... a phone's keypad)... nor it's 600 dlls price for something that'll do the same things as my regular phone... and a gadget that's first generation... I'll wait for a iPhone 2 or something... and when my country's technology catchs up to new standard phones.

Whats wrong with you PCers

by rashidtem - 1/10/07 4:59 PM In reply to: Another phone that will be obsolete in 8 months by frankroh

Apple doesn't make products that go obsolete in months, its a PC thing

Post 39 of 105

Man...

by Ed-duh-win - 1/10/07 6:31 PM In reply to: Whats wrong with you PCers by rashidtem

Its this attitude that alienates the PC users from Macs. The Macs-are-the-best-at-everything-and-Apple-is-the-best-maker-in-the-world attitude. [sarcasm]Perhaps Apple should create the Mac Party of World to promote the Mac Superiority idea.[/sarcasm]

Post 40 of 105

I like that idea, well, OS X is better hands down

by rashidtem - 1/11/07 9:04 PM In reply to: Man... by Ed-duh-win

Yap buddy you are right MAC is the best. Apple make flawless products and stop counting few incidents your windows base useless stuff is full of problems.

Post 41 of 105

Even though...

by Ed-duh-win - 1/12/07 3:12 PM In reply to: I like that idea, well, OS X is better hands down by rashidtem

Even though the world runs on Windows. Business, schools, government...you name it. Macs are only usuable for personal use, in large volumes they are as good as Intel 486s. Read my other posts for explanation on why Macs are slower than Intel 486s while connected to 500+ other Macs. on a network.

Mac freaks, please quit it with the horrible and unnecessary attitude. This is what brought Hitler down, the idea of German supremacy. The best not always wins, like Sony Betamax...or right now, the Playstation 3.

Post 42 of 105

So you are admitting

by rashidtem - 1/12/07 4:07 PM In reply to: Even though... by Ed-duh-win

"The best" not always wins, like Sony Betamax...or right now, the Playstation 3. That's what's wrong with PC users. You are admitting Mac is the Best, I'm not here arguing about winning, my argument is just simply what you just said THE BEST NOT ALWAYS WIN so I take that as compliment and please give a try to what is best not what is running in white house cuz so far white house isn't doing too good, just like windows they are crashing too. BTW Apple does make best and most popular MP3 Players, if you dont believe me read this on CNET here

http://news.com.com/The+iPod+at+5/2009-1040_3-6127241.html

"In the half decade since its unveiling, Apple Computer's iPod has grown up but not out. It has gotten smaller in size and more powerful in performance, both as a digital music player and as a force in the marketplace. Here's another look at one of the most successful and, among its competitors, envied gadgets in the history of consumer electronics."

You know what buddy, you are right. They are using windows every where, matter of fact, there are countries where they have no freakin idea about OS X but they know windows and that's fine. We are OK with that.

One reason, if they have MAC running every where then I would say 70% IT jobs will be eliminated cuz they wont need tech to come out five times a day to install new drivers. I dont want any more unemployment world wide so I'm fine with them running windows.

2nd reason, as long there are less OS X users, we have less bugs, no virus threats, my mac stays online and turned on for months and I dont have virus protection installed. We are happy with OS X because simply it makes our lives easier and most of MAC Freaks are the one who are hurt by Windows and now they sleep better. And believe me we can do almost 90% of what you can do on your PC so that thing what people say you cant run software on MACs is just crap. We dont need 50 software to play music. One is good which runs best and everything that I need (iTunes).

I am admitting..

by postmailgmail - 1/12/07 8:24 PM In reply to: So you are admitting by rashidtem

That you have to learn to at least form some type of discernable argument. And use spell check or something. Type sentences with correct grammar at the very least.

Post 44 of 105

Now you can't bash MAC

by rashidtem - 1/12/07 9:31 PM In reply to: I am admitting.. by postmailgmail

Keep working on your grammar, I'm sure your PC will help you in that cuz if you would have mac you would have been doing better things, such as Photo or video editing or working on some music but hey improving your vocabulary and grammar makes you more cool and it must be funnnn.

Post 45 of 105

You are the one.

by Ed-duh-win - 1/13/07 1:32 PM In reply to: Now you can't bash MAC by rashidtem

You and that member are the ones that need to improve the grammar. Your other posts are all over the place in terms of spelling and grammar. You should take a look at your own posts. Oh, and don't turn to personal attacks, please, we're arguing a point here, so respond to my posts, not how I type. Or you risk giving a bad impression to rest of the world that PC users argue points properly and Mac users just evade argument. I'm sure you dont' want that?
