Question About HD for a Newbie

by podoshj - 1/1/07 6:16 PM

Hi,

I just got a new Samsung LN-S2341W HD LCD Widescreen TV. It has a 16:9 as aspect ratio. I have Comcast Digital Cable HD. Here's my question: I noticed that on certain HD channels, the picture still looks letterboxed. Is this normal? I thought that all HD channels were not supposed to be letterboxed?

Thanks!

Here's a really dumb question - could it be because I don't have an HDMI cable hooked up to the cable box?

You will need to use either Component video cables or HDMI to get an HD picture.

As a recap, having recently hooked up two HD TVs to cable

by toddtee - 1/6/07 3:05 PM In reply to: Thanks! by podoshj

To display HD pictures on an HD-TV you need:
- HD service from your provider
- an HD receiver from same
- hook-up via component cables or an HDMI cable
- the cable box needs to be set up to display the various HD options, but almost surely the service tech took care of that.

Other factors:
- some cable boxes don't have an HDMI port
- Some HD programs are broadcast in HD, but in 4:3 aspect not 16:9

All that being said, I have my two HD-TVs nooked up via component cables and get a fantastic picture. You can buy excellent component and HDMI cables from www.monoprice.com at 1/4 or less than you'd pay anywhere else I've found.

Good luck!!

MR POD TRY BOTH

by stewart norrie - 1/2/07 12:10 PM In reply to: Question About HD for a Newbie by podoshj

Try both componit and h.d.m.i. cables on your set up. Sometimes one type of cable will give you a better picture stewee

You might need to go into the cable box setup menu and select 16:9 if you haven't already.

MR POD CHECK OUT DISH NETWORK DUMP COMCAST

by stewart norrie - 1/3/07 11:59 AM In reply to: Question About HD for a Newbie by podoshj

Dish network gives you the hi-def package and VOOM for only $15.00 extra per month Also you have the option to pay an extra $5.00 more for your network station in hi-def or do what I did throw up an outside antenna for your local hi-def channels I receive 18 local digital channels 9 are in hi-def and 5.1 sound Just do a digital scan and all the locals will go into the dish main menue. Comcast just wired up our block and were nice enough to let me try there hi-def system for 3 days . The dish network put out a much better picture stunning quality good luck steweeee

16X9 is a compromise

by tomrobin - 1/6/07 9:50 AM In reply to: Question About HD for a Newbie by podoshj

The 16/9 (1.778:1) aspect of a HD screen was created as an "equal compromise" to all previous proportions. IT DID NOT MATCH ANYTHING.
16/9 screens will have "bars" on the sides or top/bottom when showing any other format.
Now some Hi Def original material is 16/9 notably Pixar movies and many TV Series.
I early Hi Def development manufactures still thinking CRT could not reasonably make 2.35:1 tubes to match wide screen film.
16/9 Aspect is not a Hi Def requirement. Many Hi Def cameras do not have 1.778:1 native to allow for post framing adjustment.
