I went into the cingular store to try and get the 8525 but they said that I have to get the $40.00 plan to go with it or I couldn't get the phone. This seems like extortion to me...but their has to be some way around it because I am in school and get free wireless and dont need the $40.00 plan. I know someone has beat this, can you just let me know how. Thanks.
You can purchase the phone outright but it will cost you $550. If you sign up with a 2-year contract, however, they will give you a $150 price reduction, taking the cost down to $400. Thus, you can still get the smartphone but if you don't accept their offer you will have to pay the regular retail price with no special Cingular rebates.
If you don't want monthly service, though, why even get a smartphone? A standard PDA like the Dell Axim X51 or Palm TX has built-in WiFi for use at school, so why pay extra for a functionality you don't plan on using?
Just a thought.

Why pay $40 for Cingular's Wifi when you can get wifi for free in alot of places? Sure if I was in the middle of the woods and I wanted to browse the web I guess it would be nice to have Cingular's service. But be a smart consumer and take advantage of unsecure wifi, for example alot of city's are starting to give their residents free wifi. I just don't think its fair to be bound by a corporations rules just so they could maske a penny off you. I just wanted to know how people are getting around this $40 service fee.
Hey,
I recently bought the Nokia E62 from Amazon.com, and they said I had to take the $40/month data plan. However, they did tell me I could cancel it later by calling Cingular - they didn't seem to care so long as my plan from Cingular was over $39.99 (including voice).
I later called Cingular and changed the $40 data plan to the $23.99 option (5 MB instead of unlimited). Will wait a month and see my usage before cancelling that, if I think it necessary. Pay-as-you-go service is 1 c/kb. Text messages - I don't know if the data plan includes that. The data plans are too confusing - what's on the Cingular website is not necessarily what you get if you call them...
I usually find Amazon.com's phone prices to be lower than Cingular's. Something else you might already know - if you are employed by your university (e.g. graduate student), your school might have an employer discount. You can call Cingular and find out.
Good luck,
RS
I'm in the same boat, wanting a phone/pda in one unit (and one charger), with free wi-fi only. I found Cingular's web cost $449) to be within a few $ of the store price, no data plan requirement. The Data Plan gets you a $50 rebate.
I would get the Palm Treo 650 ($150 at Cingular web) if I could find the Enfora Wi-Fi card in stock anywhere (about $129). Having used both Windows Mobile and Palm OS, I still prefer Palm. I already own TomTom Nav software (upgrading from a Palm T3), so don't need the TeleNav connection. More wi-fi phone/pdas needed on the market!
