I've been torn on which mp3 player I should get for a while now. Here are some things I like: nice screen, long battery life, small&light, nice-looking, easy-to-use&clean interface, simple navigation. These are the ones I'm looking at right now and approximately how much I could get them for (I'm 17 with no job, so money is kind of an issue..)
$225- iRiver Clix (4gb)
$195- Samsung YP-T9 (4gb)
$180- iPod Nano (4gb)
$150- Sandisk Sansa e260
I can afford all of them, but the most bang-for-the-buck would be nice. I also only have about 2.5gbs of music, so I don't need one of those huge mp3 players.
I was never much of an audiophile, but I do like my music to sound decent. I never really noticed sound quality until I compared my Zen Micro with my sister's iPod 5g.. It would be a plus to have a couple videos on the go, not to rule out the iPod Nano (if it's overall the best in your opinion).
Sorry for the unorganized post, but thanks for your help! I'll post again if I have any more to say.
I forgot to mention, is this even a good time to purchase a new mp3 player? I heard Apple is going to have a presentation thing soon, and they MIGHT give information about the new iPod(s). And since it's almost a new year, companies might release info on their next gen of players.
There are also a couple mp3 players ones I'm looking at, except they're not released in the U.S. yet (I want to try to avoid buying online because my parents don't approve of it). These would be the Meizu m6 miniPlayer http://www.anythingbutipod.com/archives/2006/07/meizu-m6-miniplayer-review.php and the Samsung YP-T9 bluetooth edition. Anybody know when these will be out in the U.S.?
Is there any word on other mp3 players that are going to support bluetooth or have wireless headphones? That would be awesome.
I also forgot about Best Buy and Insignia's new player. What do you guys think about this one?

Sorry for the triple post, I wish c|net had an edit function.
And I love it. It does lack the features that the other players have, but I really like the user interface and its integration with iTunes. (Some people see the iPod + iTunes thing as a big minus)
While I don't own one, I really like the SanDisk Sansa e200 Series. I like that it has an fm tuner and rechargeable and removeable/replaceable lithium ion battery. You can replace it when the battery eventually dies, but at that point you might be ready for your next player! And what I like the most about it is that you can expand the memory using a micro sd card.
I wouldn't worry so much about video, but it looks like you aren't. I also own a 5.5 Gen iPod and I find that screen too small for my tastes (I'm looking at Archos 504/604).
I think you should try to buy the biggest capacity you can afford. While you have 2.5 GB now, it could grow. I never thought I could fill up 30 GB on the iPod, but I only have 1.5 GB free space left - video takes up a lot of space and I buy at least one or two songs from iTunes a week. And I find myself having to constantly take stuff off of my Nano so I could fit more on it. (I listen to a lot of podcasts)
If you want to wait, CES and MacWorld are early next month, so hopefully there will be some exciting announcements. The thing with technology is that there seems to always be something better around the corner, after you already bought something. I'm sure you're well aware of this. You can drive yourself crazy always waiting. But unless they announce something good coming up that is really worth waiting for, don't wait beyond that.
Thaanks, very helpful reply! Does anybody else have opinions on the other players?
The Samsung Yepp T9 is a very good player, I have one and that thing pumps out some killer sweet sound quality, no hissing and all. I think u should get the Yepp, but I think this is even better....

This is also a very flawless player, it plays video, and its less than 200 bucks. Best of all, it's made by Toshiba... =D
Yes, I'm leaning towards the T9. The only thing that bugs me about it is the "slow processor." What exactly does the review mean by that?
Also, I'm looking for something small (a flash player) with decent battery life, so I don't think the Gigabeat would be for me.
I see way too many people having problems with their Sandisk e200s, so I think I'll rule that one out.
The Creative Zen V Plus also looks good, but I have one issue with it. I don't like how there's no acceleration when looking through songs, is it possible for a firmware update to fix this? If yes, is there even a chance of one being released?
yp-t9 is thinner than others has best battery life like 5 hours less than iriver but still 30 has games and text and file viewer and has the best interface other than ipod nano but has a lot of features like fm radio, fm recorder, voice recorder, games, video, photo, and supports more than itunes and against the sansa it is a lot better in features, interface, screen, battery life, thinner, and all those players u can get cheaper on amazon.com
yp-t9 (2GB): around 130 ,yp-t9 (4GB) 160-170
sansa e250 (2GB): 100 ,sansa e260 (4GB) around 130
ipod nano (2GB): 150 ,ipod nano (4GB) 200
iRiver Clix (2GB):150-160
those are all the prices on amazon.com anyway hope this review helped if i were u i would go for yp-t9 and if u are just wondering the best video player is the creative zen vision m 30GB for 200 on amazon.com
Thanks for the response, I looked at Amazon and the prices are really good. How is Amazon with their shipping? (how fast, etc.)
Something I'm concerned about in my mp3 players is how the screen does in the sun. I noticed the iPod's screen flushes out in almost any light. I drain battery quick because I like to switch between songs often (I HAVE to switch the backlight on so I can read the screen). It would be nice if I could turn the backlight off during the day and only turn it on at night.
Sorry for the awkward question.. But how do Clix, Sansa, Nano, T9, and Zen V do in the sunlight?
I think they all do pretty good in the sun. I could see my T9 screen in the sun pretty darn clearly, and I didn't notice any glare at all. If you want, you cn get those screen protectors that are used for digital cameras, and then cut out a custom shape for your T9. I used this method, and it worked great.
This assumes that you're in the U.S. If you're not, you'll have to check the website. If you buy from Amazon (and not a Marketplace seller) and choose the free super saver shipping it adds 3-5 days to fulfill your order, so you could be getting it in 6-10 business days. If you choose 2 day shipping, it's fairly quick, but you'll pay at least $10.50 for it. Regardless of how you order, you will be given a shipping estimate.
I want a flash based player but each has its qualities (like price) and its faults! But I am more focused on sound quality, do you guys think the yp-T9 sounds better than the ipod nano???? who wins in this battle?
other than that, these are the two I am focused on...

Though it doesnt seem like anyone agrees with me, I think the clix is the best of the mp3 players you listed. It got an absolutely glowing review here (http://reviews.cnet.com/iRiver_Clix_2GB/4505-6490_7-31861628.html?tag=tpr) , and it looks amazing. Personally, I prefer larger storage capacities, but in my opinion, you should go for this one, especially if you're into extras (calender, FM radio, voice recorder [very useful for lectures!], etc.). Its got a nice screen on it, and it comes in 2 or 4 gigs. Its well worth the money in my opinion.
