I know I'm behind the times, but I need help in determining which device to buy. I am a current subscriber (1 1/2 years) to Dish network and need to buy a new VCR,DVR/Tivo unit. I do not have HDTV yet, and don't see myself coverting to a HDTV unit within the next 2 years. I just recently realized that I can program the Dish receiver to record programs to my VCR!! Haven't tried it yet. I'm the type that if you show me how to do it a number of times, and I practice it and take notes, I've learned it.
My current set-up: 16 year old TV1 with a broken VCR. 4 year old TV2 with a working VCR. Numerous old VCR tapes that I still watch. I want to be able to easily record shows on TV1 with the new device, and possibly watch them on TV2. (Bigger set). Can it be done?
Please keep in mind that I only upgraded from Win95 to Xp last year and am not a "techie" so please keep your advice in plain spoken English!!
Thanks in advance.
I'm not sure exactly what you are looking for... but the title of your question, inferred that you are looking to buy a DVR. That being the case, and keeping in mind your "non-techie" status, I would whole-heartedly reccommend getting a TiVo. Since you are not yet ready to go the HD-TV route, I would specifically reccomend the TiVo2 80 hour DT, (Dual Tuner).
Since you are using Dish, if you want to take advantage of the ability to record 2 different shows at the same time, (while watching a third that you already have recorded, if you so desire), you will have to get an additional Dish reciever box. (I'm not familiar with what DISH offers), but I can tell you this:
TiVo is absolutely the BEST, most simple to use, and understand, with the most features, DVR on the Market. Their is a reason that people who DONT have a TiVo, still tell people that they do.
TiVo will allow you to press ONE button, and automatically record an entire season of your favorite TV show ( just as an example). The list goes on, and on. And while there will probably be someone that says that brandX does everything a TiVo does... it doesnt. Not as well, not as simply, and not with the ability to do a LOT more, IF and WHEN your " Techie" status changes.
good luck!
