ultimately it comes down to candella power, but if I'm shopping around for an LED flashlight, how do I convert the vaguely described bright, super-bright, long-reach, etc. descriptions of the lights?
Surefire and Pelican lights are among those I'm looking at...

As a person who needs a good flashlight and uses one all the time, can I suggest the websight Flashlight Reviews.com
http://www.flashlightreviews.com/index1.html
This fellow has gone way out of his way to explain the ins and outs of flashlights. His information is spot on.
The two brands you picked out are on each end of the spectrum. Pelican lights are affordable and pretty good overall, depending on which light you get. Surefire are top end flashlights. Don't be surprised to pay over $200.00 for one. In my mind, they aren't worth it. A nice compromise might be the Streamlight brand.
