Office updates

by acheimets - 7/21/06 4:59 PM In reply to: xp updates failure by compbugs

I had difficulty with the most recent office updates. I inserted my original software CD in the drive, downloaded a specific update (excel) and it worked. Subsequently all other Office updates installed automatically.

If you still have problems--you may want to try the following solution provided by Microsoft Online support--

After reviewing the case log, I understand this issue is: you failed to install updates for Office 2003.

We shall be working to resolve this issue through the course of the case. If I have misunderstood your concern please let me know.

Please first disable all your Anti-Virus and Firewall programs since this may be related to the issue.

If you have used Windows Live Safety Center or OneCare to clean the registry keys, please take the following steps first. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\(user name)\Application Data\Windows Live Safety Center\BackUp and double-click the .reg file created by the Microsoft Safety registry cleanup. Try the update again. Does this solve the problem?

Note: To view the folder, we might need to enable the Show hidden files and folder options first.

1. Open My Computer > click Tools menu > click Folder Options

2. Switch to View tab > check “Show hidden files and folders” checkbox

3. Click OK to quit the window.

I recommend you first manually download the update and then install it from your hard disk.

For KB917149:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=3D998170-4023-459A-8423-F8D6B79B2BEE&displaylang=en

For KB917334:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=ADEA09B4-481A-4908-8B77-0630AC679CAC&displaylang=en

For KB916518:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=FCED8804-45B4-4FD2-8FDB-4960C5BB8954&displaylang=en

Note: Please download the fullfile file. Insert Office CD if it prompts.

If the problem persists, I think that disabling the LIS would clean-up the registry setting and might fix the issue. If the update requires source from cache and if it is binary update, the first attempt at install might fail and the install will switch to full file for the next detection cycle.

Step 1: Disable Local Installation Source

===========================

1. Download the Local Installation Source Tool from:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=10FA7AA3-695B-42C3-9045-B812BA0FED3E&displaylang=en

2. Extract LisTool.exe and LisTool.chm to some location.

3. Run the GUI tool (LISTOOL.exe) and choose the Disable LIS option. Click next. Select all the check boxes in the subsequent dialog. Then proceed to Finish.

4. Try doing a detect and install again.

If it still failed, please try the Step 2.

Step 2: Enable Office Source Engine service

==================================

This issue may occur if the Office Source Engine service (OSE.EXE) startup type is set to "Disabled". By default, the Office Source Engine service startup type is set to "Manual". Windows Installer uses a custom action to start the Office Source Engine service. However, Windows Installer cannot start this service if this service is disabled.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

1. Determine the status of the Office Source Engine service. To do this, follow these steps:

a. Click "Start", click "Run", type "services.msc" (without the quotation marks), and then click "OK".

b. In the list of services, double-click "Office Source Engine".

c. View the option that appears in the "Startup type" list.

2. If the start type is set to "DISABLED", modify the startup type to a setting of "Manual". To do this, right-click "DISABLED" list, click Properties, General tab. And then select "Manual" in the "Startup type" list, and then click "OK".

3. Try to install the Office Update packages again.

4. Repeat above steps to enable the "Windows Installer" service again.

If the problem persists, we can try to detect and repair Office to resolve the issue.

Step 3: Repair Office

==================================

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2. Click Add or Remove Programs.

3. Click the Office program that you want to repair, and then click Change.

4. In the Maintenance Mode Options dialog box, click Reinstall or Repair, and then click Next.

5. In the Reinstall or Repair Office dialog box, click Detect and Repair errors in my Office installation, and then click Install.

6. When the repair process is finished, run the public update again

If the problem continues, please reinstall Office through Windows Installer Cleanup Utility because the kind of the issue could be caused by the corrupted installation files for Office.

Step 4: Reinstall Office (Please confirm that you have the Office CD on your side)

=================

Note: You may refer to following knowledge base article to back up your Outlook data prior to removing Office. You don't need to back up other Office documents such as Word, PowerPoint files because they are independent files stored on your hard drive.

2. After you install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, click Start menu-> All Programs-> Windows Install Clean Up.

3. Highlight Microsoft Office entry in the list and then click Remove. Click OK and wait for the process to end.

4. If you can see any other Office products like Office 2000, FrontPage, Publisher, etc, please click remove to uninstall them.

Note: If there isn't any Office entry exists, please continue to do step5-step12.

5. Click Exit to close the Windows Installer Cleanup utility.

6. Click Start menu-> Run, type "regedit" (without the quotation marks) in the Open box and press Enter.

7. Expand the registry tree on the left pane and locate the following two registry keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office

8. Right-click on this key and click Delete to delete those keys.

9. Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office.

10. Click Start menu-> Run, type "%Temp%" (without the quotation marks) in the Open box and press Enter.

11. Delete all files in the Temp folder.

Note: If you receive error when you delete files, just ignore this step. It doesn't matter.

12. Restart computer and reinstall Office.

If the problem persists, the exact error message is important for us to narrow down the problem. Please capture a screenshot of the error message and send it to me as an attachment using the following steps (If you cannot capture screen shot, please write down the exact error message.):

(a) When the screen appears, press the Print Screen key several times, which is to the right of the F12 key on the keyboard. Note: nothing will happen.

(b) Open Paint or Microsoft Word or WordPad.

(c) Click Edit (menu) -> Paste or press Ctrl + V.

(d) Click File (menu) -> Save (if you are using Paint, please save as .JPG).

I hope those information is helpful. Please let me know the result at your earliest convenience. If anything in my email is unclear, feel free to contact me. I will be glad to help. I look forward for your reply.

Best regards,

xp updates failure solution

by betty-ann - 7/22/06 6:23 AM In reply to: xp updates failure by compbugs

I previously had the same problem with updates for Windows XP Pro. The update would download but would not install so everytime I turned my computer on this update would try to install. To fix the problem I did the following:

* Open Windows Explorer
* Go to the WINNT folder and select <system32>
*in the system32 folder look for <Softwaredistribution> folder.
* Empty the contents of this folder; do not delete the folder itself.
* Reboot the computer and download the update.

This is what I did and it fixed my problem.

How?

by tallin - 7/22/06 10:56 PM In reply to: xp updates failure solution by betty-ann

Novice here- I found that folder, there are many items in it, namely:
setup/servicestartup/wupi.dll/5.8.0.2469/wups.dll and again 5.8.0.2469. Are you sure I should delete all these items to install the following updates that would not install.

1) Security Update for Excel Viewer 2003 (KB918425)

2) Security Update for Office 2003 which incidentally I do not have installed on this computer.(KB917151)

Please advise me further if you don't mind..thanks

Re: How

This is the method I used when I had problems with updates not installing. I have pasted below the instructions from Microsoft support as well as the link where the 10 methods are outlined. It has been awhile since I had this problem so... hope this helps!

Method 10: Clear all files in the software distribution folder. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
2. In the Services (Local) pane, right-click Automatic Updates, and then click Stop.
3. Minimize the Services (local) window.
4. Select all the contents of the Windows distribution folder, and then delete them.

Note By default, the Windows distribution folder is located in the drive:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder. In this location, drive is a placeholder for the drive where Windows is installed.
5. Make sure that the Windows distribution folder is empty, and then maximize the Services (local) window.
6. In the Services (Local) pane, right-click Automatic Updates, and then click Start.
7. Restart the computer, and then run Windows Update again.

Same problem

by Keith_Delong_864 - 7/24/06 12:38 AM In reply to: xp updates failure by compbugs

Hi, I have had the same problem for a while now.
Because your updates are not installing, you are entitled to free level 2 - Microsoft support. They are terrific. My probs started with Windows Installer. MS support- after days & days of troubleshooting finally solved that for me.
I still can't install Office updates, but did succeed in installing NET.Framework 2.-Now that has stopped updating again(same as Office) but the XP Security updates as well as Windows Defender havn't missed a beat.
Some one suggested it may be from using a registry cleaner- well Thats what I think as well. I have files missing from everywhere. Support have tried to sort mine out, but it's so corrupt, I was told I would continually have 1 problem after the other.(I've had my PC over 2 years-I buy a certain reg cleaner 2 months ago-mainly from my lack of knowledge-but still, now my PC's just about ready for the tip)
I can use my Office Word if I open a file I've created using Word-then I open a new page. But I can't use my disc as I get a message saying 'The administrator has set permissions forbidding it'(well I havn't-but try telling my PC that!)
I dont have any answers-I've given up going around in circles & belting my head up against the wall. I hope you sort yours out. If any one can tell me how to get rid of a phantom administrator or to reset the registry without any drama I'm all ears.
Good luck guys.
Denise.
