Mio C310x or Navman F20 or Roadmate 300 or Roadmate 760?

by famousmaxpowers - 12/12/06 4:06 PM

I'm trying to figure out which one of these 4 gps I should buy as a christmas gift. Which ones have the best features? I'd like to know which one is the best choice and which is second choice.

I recommend the Mio c310x!

by yammer2002 - 12/15/06 9:05 PM In reply to: Changed my mind about the Roadmate 760. by famousmaxpowers

Reason is..................well, i have it and love it! Got it at a great price during Black Friday, was going to return it, but after testing it out, loved it's looks, features, speed, bright flat screen, detailed maps, route options (automatic re-routing), small pocketable size, accurate directions, trip logs, map view options, millions of POI's, complete map of 50 states of USA and Guam and Puerto Rico, gps locking feature.............ETC ETC!!

I think Circuit City has it on sale right now for $249 (great price considering Garmin's c320 is $300, but bulky size, curved glaring screen, need to self-install maps, need 1-2GB SD card to fit all states, etc).

The place where u started a discussion for the Mio c310x isn't letting me post replies. Giving me errors, so just to let u know, I'm in. Feel free to PM/message with questions and other stuff about the Mio c310x.

BTW, this page isn't accessible through the forums right? It is its own personal forum, which is also available for each product as well?

Mio C310x

Hey guys is there a Canadian map for this GPS? Do you know if there will be one in the near future? Any idea on how much it will cost or where I can get it?

Thanks

I only used the c310x

by ackmondual - 1/2/07 12:00 AM In reply to: Mio C310x or Navman F20 or Roadmate 300 or Roadmate 760? by famousmaxpowers

It's currently my first GPS device I've used and probably will be so for a long time to come. While I can't compare it to the other ones youve mentioned I can comment on the Mio c310x as I've been using it for a month now.

Comes with car charger, AC wall charger, US maps preloaded, Canada maps to be loaded manually from included DVD. I think it can do international, but dunno how much it is for those maps or even where to get them. Comes with car mount which I don't use.

Battery seems to go fairly quickly. I suppose used it too quiickly bef letting it fully charge for the first time? Not an issue if you charge it at home or in car every other day or every other other day even if u use it all the time.
Routes may not be the fastest or shortest despite the settings u set, but soi far, i trust it enough for it to take me blindly into unknown territory. It seems to be most accurate and fast when planning rural routes. WHen it comes to interstate highways and local roads, it may be rather off since these roads are subject to construction by the local transport authorities. I was in DC and the thing directed me the VERY LONG WAY around the DC beltway (counter clockwise) for about a 300 degree turn when going clockwise would've saved alot of time. This was the only thing that really concerened me so far.

MP3 player works, but is a letdown. Cannot fast forward within tracks. Not an issue if you consider that a GPS user should be more focused on the road, but not particulariliy convenient if you play 30min ebook tracks. Also, u need to leave the GPS mapping functionality temporarily to access MP3 controls. Takes a short time to reload/open the GPS map screen, but still, this could've been handled better. Push come to shove, still better than nothing.

at the $400 to $500 MSRP, look elsewhere for more features like text to speech (e.g. "turn left in 100 meters onto Main St") or Bluetooth. At $300 or so, it's a good deal for 'somewhat beyond basic' features.

A Fix Is Available

by rmusic - 1/18/07 8:18 AM In reply to: I only used the c310x by ackmondual

Just thought you would like to know that Mio has a fix (update) for the Washington DC route problem, a few other fixes as well including a fix for the Fast Fly Over not working.

Not sure if you want to takle this but I did without any problems and now the FastFly is working and a few other issues are fixed including the Washington DC routing problem and others.
I do not plan on going to Washington DC anytime soon but it was worth doing to fix the FastFly and a other issues in some states.

Here are the steps:
Re: FastFly Option
I can help you with a fix.
First, your unit is fine. I spoke to a Mio Tech person yesterday and he told
me that they are aware of the FastFly problem and will have a fix for it
very soon.
Many customers are calling Mio about the same problem with Fly Over working
but no FastFly.

I was reading a post on the gpspassion.com forum and found the fix for a
routing problem in Washington DC and a few other issues including the
FastFly problem.
I downloaded it and installed this update and now the FastFly works.
Follow these steps:
1. Make sure the USB cable is connected to the Mio C310X
2. I assume you already have the Mio USB driver installed
3. Connect C310X to the Computer via USB Cable
4. Download the file/update from the link below. (scroll down the page a
little and click on HERE to download it)
http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=74365
5. Unzip it
6. Double click on "Map Update_C310X_0.0.0.0.2.exe" to install
7. When it is finished, click on "Update Complete".
8. Remove USB Cable.
9. To conclude, use a stylus or paper click end reboot the device. To reboot
find the On/Off switch button on the bottom of the device on the right side,
and move the bottom from ON to OFF and back ON again.
* As I said this update fixes a few issues according to Mio such as a
routing problem in Washington DC, FASTFLY and other routing issues in some
states.

To test FASTFLY type in an address a few streets away from home. Press
FlyOver and the Menu Button on the Side (one down from power button) at the
same time but continue to keep the Menu button held down to see your route
move on a FastFly. Again, after you are done selecting an address go to the
FlyOver option and press both buttons at the same time but keep your finger
down on the Menu button.
This FastFly is without sound and street names, which is normal for FastFly.

Good Luck,
Richard

what are Fastfly and Flyover?

Can't seem to find those terms anywhere and the c310x manual made no mention of these terms.

Fly Over and Fast Fly Over

by rmusic - 1/18/07 11:47 AM In reply to: what are Fastfly and Flyover? by ackmondual

The User Manual for MioMap v3.2 US English August, 2006 has info for Fly Over and FastFly Over on page 44.
Also, you can see FlyOver as a choice on your Mio C310X by following the following steps:
1. Start Mio and tap on Mio Map
2. Select and Address Street and Address Number that is close to your residence as a test.
3. Once you do this you will be back to the map ready to travel
4. Press Menu (bottom left)then the 3rd icon that has the blue flag, orange flag with arrow at the bottom just before the house icon.
5. Press Fly Over and you will see a simulation of traveling to the chosen address.
My post is about fixing the FlyOver so it can also do a FastFly simulation.

How does this unit calculate routes

by epfegn - 1/24/07 9:24 AM In reply to: Fly Over and Fast Fly Over by rmusic

Hello,

I just had a question as I never had a GPS before and considering this unit. It appears that the 310X does not offer any options to pick "fastest route" or "shortest distance" or "avoid highways" etc. Has this been an issue for anybody? Does anybody know what the standard routing method is based on? Seems like this would be a nice update for the unit but maybe not a big deal.

stuck on #2

by ackmondual - 5/15/07 12:55 AM In reply to: A Fix Is Available by rmusic

2. I assume you already have the Mio USB driver installed

I don't have this, and yet, the included DVD does NOT appear to include this. Mio's site offers a USB driver in a zip, but that zip only contains 2 files, WCEUSBSH.INF and WCEUSBSH.SYS, which aren't EXE files and don't know what I'm supposed to do with these. I've fired off an email to Mio, so we'll see how well their cust supp is.

Mio Transfer (USB)

by rmusic - 5/15/07 4:26 AM In reply to: stuck on #2 by ackmondual

The Mio Transfer choice on the Mio C310X disc is used for the USB connection. What you installed is correct and those are the two files needed.
Once you install the Mio Transfer all you need to do is plug in your Mio C310X with the USB cable to work.
By the way, the FastFly will most likely be automatically fixed with the next MioMap coming out in the next couple of weeks, according to Mio Tech.

Still not working

by ackmondual - 5/15/07 6:58 AM In reply to: Mio Transfer (USB) by rmusic

I did indeed install the Mio Transfer software. However, WinXP is giving me the "hardware not recognized", which led me to believe that I was supposed to install some seperate USB driver (which didn't matter b/c I still don't know what where to put those files in the USB driver anyways. Some instructions from Mio would've REALLY helped).

Mio C310x

by kadamik - 1/28/07 7:38 PM In reply to: Mio C310x or Navman F20 or Roadmate 300 or Roadmate 760? by famousmaxpowers

The Mio C310x is 229.99 at Staples, $219.99 at CompUSA. Cheapest price I could find online was $158.00 at xbstore.com, but they have a $650 minimum charge and they're from Spain. I've been looking for a good GPS also, and this one looks great, especially for the price.
