Having trouble putting video on computer from canon ZR500

by TrueLeo - 12/14/06 2:40 PM

Equipment:
Canon ZR500
HP pavilion 783
Windows XP
Windows Movie Maker 2
Lite on DVD burner

The Movie maker instructions tell me to simply connect the camera to the PC by using the IEEE 1394 port then set the camera to play. Then click on capture from video device. When I do this it says a video capture device was not detected.

Am I just missing a simple step?Sorry I don't have more specs on my computer but I'm pretty sure it has what I need. Do I need to buy a firewire video capture card? Would appriciate any help getting me started. Thanks.

I am confused.

I went to the HP site to see if I could understand whether your computer has a FireWire port already built-in or not, but I cannot find anything there to confirm or discount the availability of that port... and you say you have connected the camera to the computer using FireWire - but you want to know if you need a FireWire card installed... If you connected the camera, how did you do it?

So... presuming you do not have a FireWire port built-in to your computer, yes, you need to install a FireWire card... and you will need a FireWire cable... 4-pin on the camera side and 6-pin on the computer side. No, a FireWire cable in s not included in the box with the camera (according to page 9 of the manual).

Page 66 of the ZR500 manual says in the diagram, "Commercially available DV cable". That means it was not in the box. FireWire, DV i.Link and IEEE1394 are pretty much the same thing - and all use the same cable.

Be sure the camera is connected to the IEEE 1394 port with

by Kiddpeat - 12/22/06 10:53 AM In reply to: Having trouble putting video on computer from canon ZR500 by TrueLeo

the correct firewire cable plugged into the cameras 1394 output port. Sometimes this port is called the digital or DV connection.

Then be sure the camera is turned on, and is in playback mode.

PS: Be sure the computer actually has this port. If it does

not, then, obviously, you will have to add it. Moviemaker is probably not testing to see if a port is present when it tells you to use that port. It's simply giving you a generic help screen.

I am having the same problem

by chicago1928 - 1/3/07 10:00 AM In reply to: PS: Be sure the computer actually has this port. If it does by Kiddpeat

Dell Inspiron 700m laptop
Windows XP
Windows MovieMaker
Canon ZR500

I have a four pin IEEE 1394 port built into my computer, so I bought a 4 pin to 4 pin 1394 cable. When I plug in the videocamera and turn it on, I get the same message in MovieMaker about not detecting a video capture device. Any suggestions? Do I need a six pin port in order to download the video from the 4 pin port on the Canon?

Is XP installing the device?

by sheilakmcd - 1/5/07 3:22 AM In reply to: I am having the same problem by chicago1928

If your laptop firewire port is 4-pin (most are) and camera firewire port is 4-pin, then you need a 4-pin to 4-pin cable. If your desktop computer did not come with firewire, you buy and install a PCI firewire card, which normally has a 6-pin port, so you need a 6-pin to 4-pin cable. You use a cable that matches what you have.

With that said, the ZR500 uses a driver that XP already has. All that means is you do not have to download and install a special driver to use this camera via firewire. But, when you plug up the camrea and turn it on, you should see messages from XP about "new hardware installed, XP is loading the software (driver) for your new hardware, your hardware is ready to use" etc. THEN you can use Moviemaker, WinDV, whatever your capture program is. If XP is not recognizing the camera when you plug it up and turn it on, no capture program can find it either. Troubleshoot from there. Some troubleshooting suggestions are:

Go into device manager and see if the 1394 port is listed as installed and enabled and working.

See is 1394 host controller is listed, enabled and working.

Go to Network Connections and see if 1394 is listed and enabled and not bridged with you other network adapter.

Try a new cable in case yours is bad (it happens).

Remove the port and controller from device manager, reboot and let XP reinstall them.

Same with me...

Hi,

Well same problem on my side as well!

I have :
HP Pavilion zv5000
Windows XP SP2
Windows MovieMaker
Camcorder Canon Elura 100

My laptop comes with a 4 pin firewire port, so I bought a 4-4 firewire cable. Like others described, I am unable to capture video... I checked everything seems normal in device manager ie 1394 host controller is listed, enabled and working.

I went to network connections and 1394 was listed and bridged. I disabled that but that does not solve the problem...

Don't know what to do!

Remove or disable?

Please clarify. Did you unbridge the network connections or disable the 1394 connection? It must be enabled.

You need to determine whether XP is not recognizing the camera, or just Moviemaker. After the cable is plugged up, camera turned on, and set to play, vtr, etc, (whatever the setting is called on your camera), go to My Computer and see if the camera is listed. If it is not, you can try turning off the computer, plug in the camera, turn it on and set to play, then boot up the computer and see if it is listed in My Computer. Some people have luck switching the camera over to Camera, Record, etc. (whatever your camera setting is called), and then switching it back to Play, VTR while it is plugged up and turned on.

trying again and again...

by fephoo - 1/6/07 1:32 PM In reply to: Also: by sheilakmcd

Hi,

Actually,
First I disabled the 1394 connection... it did not make it work.
After, I removed the 1394 connection. After rebooting, I realized it had been created again. Now I understand that firewire probably uses this 1394 connection. For now, I just left the 1394 connection enabled and made sure as well it was not firewalled (in case).
In device manager, IEEE 1394 is enabled, no sign of anything wrong, the device is said to be working properly.

After the cable is plugged up, camera turned on, and set to play: the camcorder is not listed in the device manager. Plugging in the camera (running in play mode) and rebooting the firewire plugged does not make anything appear in device manager.

It's very frustrating! What should be quick plug'n'play stuff is just pain! I have to figure out if I can capture video somehow otherwise I will return the camcorder soon (I have 10 days).

This afternoon, I tried to see if I would be able to capture under ubuntu and using kino/dvgrab. No luck so far...

How can I be sure that my firewire port is properly working (without trusting the device manager saying "it works"!)...

Thanks for helping.

PS: read a lot of threads on the web about firewire issues. Seems to be a common problem among camcorder users. I had no idea...

Elura 100 menu setting

by sheilakmcd - 1/6/07 6:46 PM In reply to: trying again and again... by fephoo

Your model has a menu setting for AV-DV on or off. Try switching it from whatever it is set on now, to the other.
The manual is a little confusing. It says AV-DV off for transferring video to computer, edit on computer, and then record back to tape, and AV-DV on for converting analog to digital.

just to be clear...

by boya84 - 1/6/07 6:50 PM In reply to: trying again and again... by fephoo

FireWire and IEEE1394 are the same thing... and the port on your camera may be referred to as the DV port. Again same as the other two... and last, they can all be referred to as iLink (by Sony, JVC and a few others).

Did the 2 settings...

by fephoo - 1/7/07 6:17 AM In reply to: just to be clear... by boya84

Yes in the settings of the camcorder Elura 100, I can put AV-DV on or off. Actually each time I tried I have switched this setting to make sure as I was not sure which one is correct (yes the doc is confusing on that).

I feel for you

by sheilakmcd - 1/7/07 10:22 AM In reply to: Did the 2 settings... by fephoo

There are people who are sure their camera port works and their cable works because they have tried it on another computer and had no problems. Of these people, some report success by removing 1394 controller from device manager and rebooting so XP will reinstall it. I know you removed and reinstalled from Network Connections, but did you try from device manager?

Some people report reinstalling SP2 fixed theirs. Some claim the patch from Microsoft fixed it. Some claim deleting the SP2 1394 drivers and installing the SP1 firewire drivers fixed it. Some claim updating their BIOS fixed it, even though the BIOS update did not mention that it involved any firewire fixes.

I would contact HP and see if they know of a fix.

Camcorder and firewire cable are working...

by fephoo - 1/7/07 10:26 AM In reply to: I feel for you by sheilakmcd

Hi,

Went to the shop this morning to make sure my camcorder and firewire cable are not having a problem... well there are just fine!
So it's really a problem on the laptop side...
