huge capacity alternative to iPod?

by mooresmsr - 12/10/06 11:17 AM

Here's the deal -- my wife and I are coming out of retirement to start a new carreer as over-the-road truck drivers. We have LOTS of music (100 GB+) on my desktop PC, and want to be able to take it with us. We won't own our truck, so we'll need to have some form of FM transmitter. What I'd really like to do is put my music on an external USB drive, be able to hook it to an FM transmitter, and use the truck's radio to be able to play our music. There are bunches of FM transmitters that have a USB connector, but it looks like the real issue is accessing the multiple folder setup I have on my USB drive. Is there anything that would give me the "pick a song" kind of interface that the iPod has, but that doesn't require me to download my tunes to some box that has the interface -- it just has a USB connection?

what does this mean when applied to my problem?

Does it mean that iPod will have a 100GB drive? One thing to note that I didn't really explain in my previous post -- I have a philosophical issue with iPod because of the proprietary format on iTune music (and yes, I understand that the iPod will play .mp3 format -- the issue is philosophical, not practical). I much prefer the open .mp3 file format and systems that work with it. Is there a radio that has a direct connect USB port where I could house the external disk somewhere and then run a USB cable under the rug of the cab to the radio, and use the radio as a MP3 player, with all the functionality of random play, multiple folder levels, playlists, etc.

Sorry, what?

Never heard that issue.

As to future Apple products, why ask if you can't entertain that. Besides Apple never reveals such. So let's just skip that entire discussion.

Best of luck,

Bob

Archos AV 700

It's 100 GB, plays mp3 audio as well as video. Not as easy to use as iPod though. It's marketed more as a video player, but all of the newer high capacity players feature video. I don't know of any player that connects directly to car stereo through a regular USB cable.

The choices for connection are:
car audio kit for iPod integration (sorry, but I had to mention it)
auxilliary input
fm transmitter connected to player via headphone jack
cassette adapter connected to player via headphone jack

All of the fm transmitters that I know of that connect via the docking end (where you would connect the usb cable to your computer to transfer music) are made for iPod. FM transmitters don't always work very well for everyone. I prefer the cassette adapter over the transmitter, but my car didn't come with a cassette player. I'm seriously considering replacing my car stereo so that I can use my player.
