The reply was about an Apple.

Your question has been asked by many so I tend to point to prior answers.

Bad idea.

Almost no maker supports the machine when you cross borders. This drives owners mad.

If the machine needs service, it is possible but any and all savings are lost since you have to double ship it (most of the time.) That is ship to the country where you bought it then ship from there to the service center. Since it's done that way you bear all the costs.

I'm a bit surprised you haven't heard about this issue.

Me in a similar fix

by austere_sly - 12/6/06 10:47 AM In reply to: if not apple by masimha

Hi mahimsa...actually i too was looking to get a laptop frm US..coz of two reasons...primarily companies in india have the lowest end processor that are available...and dat too at unreasonably high price....2ndly i will be saving arnd 200 $ for equally configured laptop...

I called up both HP and dell......HP doesn't offer any internationa warranty.so as Bob said shipping for repairs would be expensive affair. Dell offers a conversion to normal warrnty to international one if u get a 3 yrs or 4 yrs warranty. No idea abt apple.

as Bob earlier said in sme post i wanted to ask two questions...
1) Should i get it directly frm the company itself or shld i go to stores.which gives better deal and is the warranty offered similar ?

2) which option comes out to be less expensive..buying it online or going to stores...

Thnx in advance for ur help..

Just realize that some of us answering aren't in the same position as you are so that for how we answer may or may not be applicable or put another way your mileage may vary:

1) I've now done both and generally prefer the stores if there is a problem as they could deal with some of the issues if the machine does have to go back to the manufacturer. However, this kind of assumes you can find in a store what you want and if you are rather picky then I'd go direct so you get what you want.

2) Totally depends on what circumstances you want to use. For example, in either case one could argue that it is cheaper because of a "friend" that can get a good deal. This is in addition to the note in 1 about configuration preferences not necessarily being common, e.g. a good gaming rig isn't likely to be found in stores.

Though this is from a Canadian using stores in Canada that may be part of a US company in some cases.

Regards,
JB

I'm also looking for a decent laptop, and I went to Dell website and picked out one that came close and then customized it. You can pretty much control the price by the additions you add in. I've been doing this search (for a laptop) for about a month and I'm still indecided and confused.

dell..

I too went to dell website to customize laptop. Personally i like HP customization interface much better than Dell's one.Dell horizontal interface got me irritated soon and u ve togo through all useless stuff which u don't even plan to buy.Its not that HP does not sell these stuff but it jst irritates less...
Now to thing which matters, in HP pavilion dv6100 series, u can get a camera and 2 uni directional microphone integrated in a lcd screeen. This might not be useful for everyone but i don't see a point leaving parts at no extra costthan Dell's.
Dedicated video card matter wen playing games. dell was not offering nvidia card with insipiron 1505, which suited my needs and budget. What i knw acc to the forums is that nvidia turbocache is better than ATI hypermemory and coz of this gets Nvidia delivers better performance in games than ATI.

Cheers !!
