Chooseing/from Choices..about getting it right/wrong

by castingRod47 - 12/6/06 2:10 AM In reply to: Video Games, Am I wasting my life? by wjnthree

I quess if I needed to summarize things about "eye" "hand" co-ordination..wasteing time..getting to the depths of things..
Chooseing from Choices is a good place to organize the subject..
I was born in the eartly Fifties..Television was nearly non-existant..I remeber when my Father brought home a very nice B&W-model about 1957/I would be starting Kindergarten the next year and Howdy-Doody was a fav./or/Bozo the Clown..Puppets and Comedy was right there in front of my face..there was even a Policeman that ran a Cartoon Show..or it might have been a Comedy "skit" show(Officer)Joe Bolton..I would say YES-it all had impact..but books were right alongside of all of the "easy" stuff..I think you have the "Crowd Pleaser's" and then you need to develop some personal growth from more distinc offerings..Books have this quality..
Video Games have a Violent side..even a homicidal maniac could relate in such TERM:video games have a positive influence..
But from the standpoint of just viewing them:I would say that a month of Video Games might offer the Mind--->its Brain-chain..then it just falls at the development of a twisted truth concerning Technology..you begin to loose ground on the First Blush of a new invention..you just get all caught up in "passing time"..
I would give the PC Keyboard its DUE on Eye-Hand co-ordination..the "choices" in Monitor class..or CPU and Hardware choices for a more in-depth approach to learning Technology..
Video Games...I must say I did enjoy drinking beer and playing Ping-Pong on a Commodore or Nintendo at my neighbor's house..we were in our middle 30's..and really killing time until we returned to our jobs the next morning..
Killing Time has its rewards..and I think the reward we all look for is some fortune..weither it be monetary or knowledgeable insight..its all about TIME.

UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF SLEEP = ALCHOL, DANGEROUS!

by fozziebear88 - 12/6/06 2:32 AM In reply to: Video Games, Am I wasting my life? by wjnthree

PERHAPS THE GAMMING COMMUNITY COULD OR SHOULD PUT A WARNING ON THEIR PRODUCTS TO BE AWARE OF THIS POTENTIALLY LETHAL PROBLEM OF NOT MUCH SLEEP DUE TO OVER EXCESSIVE GAMMING , RATHER LIKE THE WARNINGS ON CIGARETTE PACKETS !!!
I AGREE WITH ALL OF THE OTHER POSTS , NOTHING WRONG WITH A LITTLE RECREATION , MAYBE HAVE A BIT OF A SPLURGE EVERY NOW AND AGAIN MAYBE , JUST TRY TO KEEP AN EVEN KEEL , A BALANCE ON THINGS, DON'T SERIOUSLY BURN YOURSELF OUT BY BURNING THE CANDLE AT BOTH ENDS SO TO SPEAK , GETTING TO BED AT 2.00 OR 3.00 ETC IN THE MORNING ETC !!! THAT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BECOME A DANGER IN THE WORK PLACE OR EVEN YOUR IMMEDIATE LIVING ENVIROMENT . BEING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF SLEEP RATHER ALMOST LIKE TO SOME DEGREE THE EQUIVILENT OF BEING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF DRUGS OR ALCOHOL ETC ( MICROSLEEPS THE RESULT OF COMPROMISED CIRCADIAN RYTHMS / DOWN /TIME) , TRY DRIVING A CAR OR A FORK LIFT TRUCK ETC WHEN YOUR COGNITIVE / LOGIC SKILLS ARE SOMEWHAT COMPROMISED BY BEING SLEEPY ( AN AEROPLANE PILOT TERM CALLED " LOOK AND NOT SEE " MEANING YOUR HEAD SPACE BEING ON AUTO MATIC PILOT SOME WHERE ELSE BUT NOT REALLY PROPERLY AWARE OF YOUR IMMEDIATE ENVIROMENT WORKING OR OTHEWISE , SHIFT WORKERS / NURSES ON BACK SHIFT ETC .
PLUS YOUR EYES CAN START TO DETERIORATE GETTING MYOPIA ETC , HAVING TO GET READING GLASSES , A RELATIVE OF MINE HAS THAT PROBLEM OF MYOPIA FROM HAVING A JOB AS SIMPLE AS A SECRETARY IN FRONT OF A COMPUTOR MONITOR ALL DAY . NOW SHE CAN'T DO THAT JOB ANYMORE BECAUSE HER EYES ARE BUGGERED ! COMPUTORS ARE GREAT FUN AND POSSIBLY A FUN TRADE TO GET INTO , IF THATS YOUR THING. YOU COULD PROBABY START MAKING SOME INROADS WHILST YOUR STILL AN YOUNG BLOKE . TAKE THE INITIATIVE , YOU STILL HAVE YOUR YOUTH TO FALL BACK ON WITH THE WORK SITUATION THING.

Video Games-drugs & gambling

by GElk - 12/6/06 3:05 AM In reply to: Video Games, Am I wasting my life? by wjnthree

Video Games are a big waste of your life. Sure there are positive characteristics, but just because a drug has positive characteristics does not make it good or that it won't waste your life using it. My parents have always told me video games are like gambling; an addiction in itself, not a waste, but more of a risk, where in which the player may lose their life! Drug dealers may argue that dealing is the only way to make a lot of money with no education or other requirements, and drug lords are certainly successful at acquiring large amounts of money, to a certain point of course, and crime does not pay kids.

While video games may increase hand to eye coordination and even reflexes, among other positives, it is unhealthy to sit in front of a computer doing repetitive motions day in and day out.

Rules change while playing online, and regulations set forth in your home, RV, school, or church (religious institution), are not applicable on the internet! Profanity and all sorts of mental anguish are allowed to be transgressed and even sometimes a strategy for online players. After all, figuring psychological warfare is only part or "in the game".

Although there may be more positive aspects to video game play than most would like to admit, like my mind has not completely melted yet, and I am a more technology forward individual than the next person I meet on the street, and I stress I am not a geek. Social interaction outside is much healthier outside than it is from inside your own room/office.
A book can be written on how positive video game play is for people in remote, or constrained people.

Video games have nothing to do with violence. We live in a violent world, not to mention an inconsiderate person is most likely to get me angry and not someone online and video games will have absolutely nothing to do with me getting angry at someone outside of a game. If anything, video games are a safe place and a better place to get angry at someone, because there is absolutely nothing one can do hurt someone else 1,000 miles away (instantly anyhow). Unless of course, they act, get in a vehicle, travel (while mean not playing video games), and perform many actions to commit that violent act.

Like watching TV, parents must monitor their own children and regulate them however they wish under their own house rules, but should not abuse their rights as parents onto anyone else online, they have no jurisdiction outside their own home. Renting servers and restricting speech is pathetic in my book, and if you don't want to communicate or deal with people online, don't pay hundreds to rent servers and swing your paycheck out at people. For example, war games are violent, if you don’t want your kid to play a violent game, don’t buy a game, in which killing everyone else is the game (if someone was going to shoot me, I might swear at them).

Everyone that buys the $5.00-$60.00 (plus tax, shipping and any other fees, months, year. Etc…), should not be subjected to bans and other stupid moral codes, other than one great code called no-hax/cheats or the other big rule, don't interrupt the game (chatting is allowed, just no spamming, that may get too annoying and should be stopped). As one of the only other positive characteristics of gaming, especially online, is the social interaction between people across vast distances.

Oh yeah, not to forget to mention fun, fun, fun in the glow of the LCD created sun. Video games, inhibit productivity, if not stop it completely. But, provide a wonderful colored distraction from a very not so pretty, not so forgiving world. You make a mistake in a game and you lose a point, while in a bar you may lose your life, among other hazards.

Balance is not the answer either, it is like starting a kid out on weed and saying heroin in low dosages is ok. All decision making is left with the individual, games cannot be blamed for anything and should not. All morals and behavior must be influenced by the parents and teachers, oh yeah, and by the cops, politicians and any other authority figures that may be around. I AM NOT IN SUPPORT OF ANY LEGISLATION TO STOP VIDEO GAMES.

Unless your kid is an artist, or programmer, or some kind of mathematical genius, video games have no usefulness other than to pass time. Playing them in competitions sponsored by corporations that try to addict as many people as possible to video games is really not the best career path. Video game tester is not exactly a job that requires much motivation; you might as well be a drone. And, any useful corporate job requires not only a very good understanding of the product, but a very good education. I am not going to employ anyone in my Billion dollar software company who has no higher education or that can demonstrate some sort of demonic borne skills in programming to addict other kids to video games.

Sure, you could open your own business and cater to local video gamers, but that is too much like opening a comic book store for me. I would also like to wish the family and friends of the missing CNET employee. I am unaware of what happened; I just caught something about his disappearance on CNN.

VideoGames: great 'part of a balanced intellectual diet...

by JayeD - 12/6/06 3:24 AM In reply to: Video Games, Am I wasting my life? by wjnthree

As a licensed Professional Counselor/Vocational Analyst I see the benefit of video games to re-set & refresh over stressed high achievers in high pressure job settings.

Have researched and reviewed video game therapy (for medical and Psychotherapeutic applications & video game training reviewed by NASA & the Military. Video games have been effective in task performance & IQ enhancement by several nations including the former Soviet Union, Great Britain, Japan...).

You may recall NASA's discovery that 'some' video games have shown promise with Attention Deficit & some Autistic cases & other disorders.

NASA has reason to hope video games may impact on effects of solitude & sensory deprivation from extended space travel, stress reduction, therapeutic depression reduction, the lists go on.

Caution: ONLY live human training & interaction, & your focus on critical thinking tasks provided through school will prepare you to effectively compete enough to be successful in life.
There is proven value in the effort it takes to endure the inevitable boredom of ANY education process, not every teacher is going to rank as an entertainer & not every subject is going to grab your neurons like a video game.

Wrong conclusion

by althebear972 - 12/6/06 3:34 AM In reply to: Video Games, Am I wasting my life? by wjnthree

Don't worry if Your grades are dropping a bit as long as You're not below average. It's quite normal at You're age. What IS important is that You don't miss out on Your personal and future business relationships. Relationships are FAR MORE IMPORTANT than education and most people find out that too late. And it's NOW that You should be developing them. It's WHO knows You that gets You the job, not what You know. I bet nobody has told You this and if You ask any adults, parents in particular, they will deny this very strongly. Because of the internet and books, knowledge is of less importance than friends, and friends friends. Who would You rather hire; an unknown person with unknown personality and grades from some university whose level of teaching You know nothing about, or a known person with the same or slightly worse grades You know well. Call it "nepotism" if You like but that's how the world works.

I bet You have sometimes wondered how somebody got the job they have, concidering that the person in question seems to have no qualifications at all for that particular job. You guessed quite right. And there is NO WAY You can compete against somebody's good friend, no matter what Your education is like (with the possible exeption of applied psychology).

You would think that "rocketscientists" must be very clever and highly educated, wouldn't You. Guess what! I know some and they are just as You and me, but with good social networks.

So play as much as You like, but go out and see people in between.

Not a Waste

by Daniel0524 - 12/6/06 3:35 AM In reply to: Video Games, Am I wasting my life? by wjnthree

Playing VIdeo games is a form of Entertainment, Saying Video games are a waste of your life, is like saying TV, or surfing the web, or even reading a novel is a waste of a life. I play a lot of Video games, but I watch hardly any TV. They are not a waste of your life, but you have to limit your play time, if they start to conflict with important aspects of your life, e.g. Academics, Jobs, Physical Fitness. So if someone tells you video games are a waste of your life, then that means that almost any form of relaxed Entertainment is.

Games are a waste?

by mrkillerman - 12/6/06 3:39 AM In reply to: Video Games, Am I wasting my life? by wjnthree

I can't see how games are a waste of time when you see see how rich Bill Gates has become from selling his software. He know makes X-Box's and 360's to make even more money! You better believe he's making billions with video games. I see video games as a way to get away from reality. Some people have poor driving skills. Playing racing games against the computer and smashing thier cars makes me feel good! I can't do this in real life when someone cuts me off. By the way I'm a video game player too. I've been playing mostly all my life! lol

Parents Point of View

by andydean1983 - 12/6/06 3:47 AM In reply to: Video Games, Am I wasting my life? by wjnthree

I have a son who is 22 years old and he has been in the same boat since he could hold a joy stick. As parents we thought wow video games were cool and they kept him out of trouble as he grew up. The thing is, video games are a drug. They are addicting and they can take over your life. I know from experience. My son has been in college for 5 years and he still trying for his bacholers degree. A lot of his failures happen because he puts gamming in front of school. Just last week he played video games 3 days straight before finals. You know he says the same thing as you. And talks to what little friends he has and feels justified with his actions. I'm not saying gamming is strictly taboo but at some time when you grow up you will find it should be the last thing on your list of things to do. Remember don't let your life get sucked down the tubes because you didn't get up out of that chair and lived.

That is not the Question

by tasdemirb - 12/6/06 3:52 AM In reply to: Video Games, Am I wasting my life? by wjnthree

The question is; is entertainment waste of time?
Is watching TV, watching movies, listening music, etc. a waste of time?
I guess that playing video games belongs exactly to this family of questions.
And if you put it this way the answer is very clear.
Of course Not!
Of course you should spare some time in your life for entertainment.
And playing video games is one of the "cleanest" ways of entertainment.
That's it.

Temporary

by mom of 5 - 12/6/06 3:53 AM In reply to: Video Games, Am I wasting my life? by wjnthree

nothing lasts forever, so if your playing video games a lot right now then perhaps this is what makes you feel good at this moment in time, but in the future things will change and some other activity may become more important to you...

video games involve skills and you need to have your wits about you too......if i am tired then i chill in front of the tv.....

the problems i see with too much playing is lack of exercise.....and if you need to get up early for school then playing into the early hours cant be good either.....

loz

Asking the question reveals the answer: Yes

by Nautico - 12/6/06 4:09 AM In reply to: Video Games, Am I wasting my life? by wjnthree

When I was first a young naval officer in the early 60s, we were required to watch black and white training films (not videos!) of a charismatic Catholic priest admonishing his captive audiences about the dangers of alcoholism. Will never forget the following monologue from one of those movies:

Father _____ : "I got a call from a young man late the other night who told me how much he had been drinking, then asked me if I thought he was drinking too much and might be an alcoholic. I asked him if he also thought he might be eating too many peas."

If you're concerned enough to even wonder whether you're wasting your life playing video games, then clearly you are, or it would not have arisen as such a compelling and negative issue. We're not talking peas here.

Respect your parents

by cecillouise - 12/6/06 4:18 AM In reply to: Video Games, Am I wasting my life? by wjnthree

Yes, your parents are there for a reason, and you need to respect them. Have them help you create a schedule that is acceptable for all of you. Your schedule should be complete with adequate time for required activities such as school, homework and sleep and also include 'free' time for relaxing. This should include physical activity and mental activity making you a well rounded person! All things in moderation is a good motto to live by.
