CNET - PLS. HELP !!!! RE: SHARP SD-SP10 SURROUND SOUND

by Russ G - 9/2/06 5:33 AM

Please Help!!

Cnet's accolades for Sharp's 2.1 virtual surround system is prompting everyone to want one (well, almost)....But the Sharp SD-SP10 is STILL now where to be bought...and it's SEPTEMBER, three months after its release in June 2006.

Help us little guys please! Get in touch with Sharp; on our behalf and ask what is going on!! Some might claim that this has been a case of false advertising, come on, three months in the waiting!!! Better yet, pls. find out for us WHEN it will be available...The folks at SharpUSA headquarters in New Jersey couldn't tell me. Can you use your muscle to find out!!!

Yours truly,
Disappointed consumer..

Sharp SD-SP10

I've been wondering about availability of this thing too. I just called Sharp Customer Service, and all they could tell me is that ''it hasn't been shipped to the US yet'' and that they couldn't give me a timeframe for when it will be available. Not particularly helpful, and makes you wonder if there's some kind of technical problem. If Sharp doesn't get its act together soon, I guess I'll have to pay more for the SoundMatters FullStageHD.

sd-sp10

by jks21 - 11/20/06 1:46 PM In reply to: Sharp SD-SP10 by elumpkin

Three weeks ago I emailed Sharp and was told the sd-sp10 was only available at select military px's to military personnel or their families. Last Friday (11/17/06) on the SD-SP10 info page there was a link to the Sharp Direct store with a listing of the unit for $299 + shipping. Today (11/20/06), no listing!?! The saga on this piece of equipment continues. I could kick myself for not placing an order on Friday just to see what would have happened. I did email Sharp again today. Stay tuned.

sd-sp10 availability

by wire-to-wire - 11/22/06 8:20 AM In reply to: sd-sp10 by jks21

I had a similar experience. Saturday I found the sd-sp10 on the Sharp Direct site and ordered it. Next day it was gone from the site. I called Sharp Monday. It was scheduled to be shipped, they said. Later when I checked, my confirmation number didn't work. I emailed Sharp and just a few minutes ago I received shipping confirm. Really, I hope this is worth the fuss!

BTW, a/o today the sd-sp10 is back on the Sharp site. YMMV! Good luck. If I do actually get the thing, I'll try to remember to report on it. By now, I don't even remember what led me to it, although I was certainly looking for a less expensive alternative to the YSP-800, the Cambridge Soundworks SurroundWorks, and others like that.

SHARP SD-SP10 SURROUND SOUND

by wire-to-wire - 11/30/06 7:28 AM In reply to: sd-sp10 availability by wire-to-wire

Yesterday 11/29, I received the SD-SP10 I'd ordered about 10 days ago fro Sharp Direct. It looks like it can still be ordered there. The SD-SP10 arrived double-boxed and well-packed. I probably could have hooked it up without the manual, but I checked the manual anyway - always a good idea.

The unit looks pretty much like its pictures. It has 3 RCA inputs, 2 optical ins, and a coax in. There is also a pre-out if you want to use a powered sub. I'm trying out the sub that came with it, which seems OK, although it can't really compete with my 150w powered. The slim design of the unit's sub is a plus.

I listened to 4 i/p sources: Cable TV via cable box RCA out, Cable TV via TV RCA out, DVD via optical out, and VCR...hmmmm...I forget how the VCR o/p's sound to the unit, I think RCA out. All sounded OK, although straight from the TV was not up to the others. This is to be expected.

Overall I would say the sound is pretty good. I am noticing what I can best describe as resonance or sibilance during certain vocals. I'll have to listen further to see how peristent this is and under what conditions. It occurred from all sources.

The Surround effects can be startling when you're in the right spot for them. The room where the unit is located and the unit's placement result in some loss of the left channels, which is severe for the Left Rear. This also occurred with my 5.1 setup. The surround effects are very good, although if you've had a true 5/6/7.1 setup, you'll know this isn't one of those.

It's nice to not have wires all over the place. The remote is pretty simple to use. For ~300 I don't think you'll get much more compact than this. After I listen to the unit for a while longer, I hope to determine if it'll serve me well or if I need to upgrade to a pricier one. The SD-SP10 is an interesting, unusual rig with good sound detail - but high-end it is not.

Placement of the unit and from where you listen to it are critical.
