we have a large number of educated youth looking for jobs in Bangladesh. Used redundant pc's from the aflluent countries can be rightly used to minimize the digital divide. We would very much appreciate of the used pc can be exported to Bangladesh for onward distribution to local schools.
Thanks

Thanks for that good question. My idea is that is better if you donate it to a community based non-profit organization that is dealing with hepling people gain knowledge such as TANZANIA EDUCATION AND INFORMATION SERVICES TRUST-(TANEDU)www.tanedu.org knowledge society group of student who meet for knowlegde sharing and and ICT use for students.
If you don't already know someone in need of an old computer, I highly recommend using FreeCycle, http://www.freecycle.org/, to find a good home for your old PC.
You sign up to a LOCAL mailing list (typically, your county). You post a description of any article you are willing to part with for free. People interested in your item will respond to your posting. You select who among them you will give your article to. You arrange a pick up time and place. It saves you from having to box it up and ship it. It has worked for me in the past with telephones, VCRs, and old furniture.
Schools are one of the first things everyone thinks of because we would all really rather do some good than add to the landfill problem. However, if a computer has become unusable in your home, likely it is also unusable in a school. After all, schools need to educate students in modern software, so if you're looking for a place to send your 10 year old original pentium Windows 95 box with the expanded (not extended) memory, giving it to a school simply transfers your recycling problem to someone else. Late model hardware is fine, but if you find it unusable, think about how frustrated a fourth grader is going to be.
I have two CRT 17" Monitors thst I attempted to donate to both Goodwill & Salvation Army ....THEY REFUSED appparently the NEEDY are getting a bit too choosey
i belong to the high desert freecycle group - freecycle is a group in yahoo and has membership for area where you live - there are two people on my group that take used computers and fix them and then give them away to people who cant afford a computer - one man only gives his away free to handicap or families with kids who cant afford a computer
right now i have an hp scanner that doesnt work but he did not know how to fix that
I sent my computer back to Dell computer for recycling. You could check your manufacturer to see if they have a recycling program. I've used WipeDrive Pro from http://www.accessdata.com/ to wipe data off the hard drive.
Hi, this stuff is rather new to me but, seems like I recently came across an article about converting an old PC into a gaming unit. I believe it referred to the conversion as being a weekend project. You might try to Google the idea but I may have seen it in about.com sorry I can't recall where I saw the info, but hope this may be an alternate use for these older units that even us "bigger kids" might enjoy. steve
Find someone like me that likes to learn as he goes and loves the challenge of rebuilding old to new.
I have not read all of the answers to this question yet but so far I have not seen this option....
This would be for broken or really old parts of computers. Any of the circuit boards and areas where you plug in memory cards or similar things have small amounts of gold in them that can be recycled. for people who rebuild and donate this would be a good option for because you could have a recycle bin for these small parts and when you get a bunch take them in and make a little extra cash to help with the cost of rebuilding computers. You will have to do a little research in the area where you live to find a company who does this kind of recycling but its not to hard.
It may take a couple of weeks for them to send you a check because they have to melt it all down and filter out the gold or some places pay you a price per pound of all the parts you bring in knowing about how much gold they will be able to recycle of of them. Other things like ethernet plugs or phone plugs have gold pins in them (just the plastic ends). Maybe it will take you 6 months to a year to get back $30.00 to $50.00 but I don't know to many people who can't use a few extra bucks and for almost no extra effort you Reduced, Reused, & Recycled.
One other quick recycle option is second hand electronic stores that will if not purchase some electronics from you to part out and resell, will take them off of your hands at no cost or know other avenues to safely dispose of or reuse this kind of stuff. If nothing else you get to find a cool new store you never knew about but wish you had because there is all kinds of cool stuff in these stores and people who know about electronics!
Hope I could help and have to say to all you who rebuild and donate computers are amazing and deserve a BIG HIGH FIVE. Even having an old windows 98 computer allows internet access which for a single mom could mean learning how to create her own online business or just find a better job lead without having to get daycare or pay for transportation to and from just to apply. THANK YOU!
Some sites online have what is called freecycle which allows you to give away items that you dont use etc to where they come pick them up which is really nice too.
I live in Ohio. Here is my suggestion. You can donate them to the Goodwill and get a tax write off. You could donate them to a Childcare Center or School. In Northeast Ohio we have an event called the Cuyahoga County Computer round-up, where residents can take old pc's and computer equipment to designated drop points for free recycling. You may want to check your local county website to see if this is offered in your community.
it's getting more difficult to donate as "good-will" types are becoming quite arrogant in their demands (I had one group turn down some clean used coats, stating that they only accepted new coats so as to not offend the recipients). A friend was working with a group that was donating functional computers to a group in Mexico that is appreciative of the donations. (The same friend has gotten about 14 oz of gold (not kona) in the last two years by recycling older CPUs, etc.) I've found that a lot of older low-income folks will take older machines for email, simple games, writing poetry.
My Message is simple and clear, send them to me! I recycle old, but not obsolete computers to the families in the Greater Fort Wayne, IN area. There are many families here with school age children whom are still with out event he basic computer. Education is a very deep issue here and we do all we can for our students. So as long as they are not older than a P3, I can use all you send. If interested, please notify me via email, as to my shipping address. Hope this will help you as it sure would help me,especially at this time of the year. By the way, all computers are donated to the families free of charge....... Ed
Hello
I have an older computer that still works (except for the CD drive) and would like to send it to you. The computer is about 10 years old. Is this something you can use?
Please let me know and I will ship it to you.
Thanks!
Christine
