Converting to digital formats

by psyllogism - 11/27/06 12:19 PM

Hi,

My father is interested in converting his old home movies (VHS) and some old reel-to-reel audio recordings into digital formats. Are there any nice at-home, do-it-yourself type options out there on the market for doing that conversion for either/both of those old formats? He's a do-it-himself kind of guy and would prefer to do that instead of sending it off to someone else to do it.

I've found a couple options for the VHS to digital converters, but I'd be interested in hearing anyone's opinion if they've had experience with these. I've had more trouble finding something that can do the reel-to-reel to digital conversion, so if anyone knows of anything that can do this, I would greatly appreciate it. And if there's such a thing as an all-in-one converter that can do both, that would be great too!

Thank you for your time.

For VHS the easiest way is to get a DVD recorder.
Nero and Roxio have built in sound capture software, just play the open reel in the line input of the PC and capture then burn to CD. John

For VHS tapes, a Pinnacle capture card will come with the necessary software. For audio, try the excellent free Audacity.
