Upgrade to next-gen DVD player or wait . .

by Darayz - 11/16/06 1:33 PM

With Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players in the market, should I take advantage of the holiday sales and get my hands on one of them? Getting the Playstation 3 would satisfy both my gaming and nex-gen DVD fix, but the chances of finding an available one are slim. (Unless I win that CNET Holiday Help Desk giveaway)

I honestly don't think there will be a clear "winner" this time around like the days of VHS vs. Betamax. I really want to take full advantage of my new HD TV but can't decide whether a a Blu-Ray or HD DVD player is a risk or a reward.

I will be waiting.

I'm waiting to see how the market responds to both. In about a year if one side performs better then the other, then I'll jump on that wagon.

So I say go for it!

Seriously, don't give into the glitz of 1080p or crazy blue lasers. Wait until the market has decided on a sure format... Yes, true HD movies would be nice right now, but would I think DVD's will be around for quite a few more years, so simply wait. Aside from that paying $500-$1000 on a player is freakin' crazy.

RE: Upgrading to Next-Gen DVD

Oh-Em-Gee... I'd wait on buying a next-gen DVD player. One reason is because there's not many brands to choose from. Secondly, those Home-Theatre in-a-box DVD systems w/ surround sounds are becoming more affordable and quite decent for sound quality. I would want to see a bundle w/ a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD myself. But gosh, next-gen are so expensive these days and the prices will eventually come down. Just give it time.

What I recommend is buying a Samsung DVD player that has high-definition upconverter and a Philips TV that has Pixel Plus technology. The result (I see) is just the same.
