Taskbar toolbar glitch...looking for registry entry...

by John.Wilkinson Moderator - 10/25/06 9:32 PM

I'm experiencing a sudden glitch where any software that adds its own toolbar (WMP, Windows Desktop Search, etc) cannot do so, but I can still create my own toolbars. (Not entirely useful.) I believe this is controlled by a HKLM/Software/Microsoft registry entry, but don't know which one. Since a web search was fruitless, could anyone narrow down the field? (Right now the odds of me finding it before Christmas are right up there with winning the lottery.)

John

No idea

Hi John.

No idea here which registry entry, sorry.

What happens when software tries to install a toolbar? Do you get any error messages?

Have you made any changes to the system recently, eg installed any software? I take it this is your test rig, so perhaps some install corrupted the OS?

In the UK the odds of winning the lottery is 14 million to 1. Can I sell you a ticket? It's mine, and I might as well get my money back! :)

The software installs as it should, and the toolbar is actually created, but when you right-click the taskbar to select a toolbar it does not appear in the list. No error messages.

This is actually my primary rig and my primary installation, so while it doesn't cause a major problem this is a bit annoying.

No recent changes. I shut down one night and it was working, and the next morning when I booted it up wasn't. There were no crashes or anything else preceding it, so my best guess is Windows just decided to take a mini vacation on me.

Well, I'm off to follow Jonah's yellow brick road...hopefully it will lead me back to Kansas. :)
John

P.S. I have a whole truckload of lottery tickets for you. They're all for past drawings but it shouldn't make a difference...we're both cursed anyways. :)

Try REGMON

and look over this page

http://www.windowsdevcenter.com/pub/a/windows/2005/05/03/find_reg_key.html

You could also make good use of Reubenking's In Control Ver 5 to monitor installations to see all changes for each.

Regmon doesn't help

Hi, having the same issue here - we want to programmatically modify the toolbars for 1,000's of users but it doesn't seem to touch the registry or filesystem in realtime. I can only assume its cached until logoff.

Needs a proper snapshot, reboot comparison I think.
