Are there any cameras that zoom OUT?

by N.T.Gray - 11/5/06 6:56 AM

The last time I bought a camera I went with a high zoom. (10x). That worked well for the purchase for which I bought it. But now I often wish I could get more people, or more of a room, into the frame. I wish I could zoom OUT. So, two questions:
a) which low cost ($200-$300 or thereabouts) zoom camera has the widest angle default mode?
b) are there any [a. low-cost] or [b. any cost] cameras that allow you from the default position to zoom OUT as well as/instead of IN?

Look for a wide-angle lens

Pretty much every camera out there establishes its default position as the farthest zoomed-out position. So, the short answer is no, you can't zoom out further. However, if you look for a camera with a wide-angle lens, you can have a wide range to begin with. Kodak has a series of dual-lens cameras, in which one lens is a wide-angle lens, and the other is a telephoto lens which allows you to have a wide starting position, but still have an effective zoom range. I would recommend checking out the Kodak Easyshare v570. http://reviews.cnet.com/Kodak_EasyShare_V570/4505-6501_7-31637957.html

CNET gave it a 7.2 rating, and it can be found online for under $250. Hope that helps.

I figured as much, but. . .

That's about what I would have guessed. I just didn't know if my guess was right or not.
I know about wide-angle lenses. But I don't want to get into changing lenses if I can avoid it. So is there any low-end camera that has an especially wide default setting?

If a changeable-lens camera is the only way to get what I want, what are some I might consider looking at?

I think the Kodaks being referred to have two lenses

permanently mounted on the camera. You do not change the lense. You simply shift between the two that are already mounted.

wide angle lenses

In checking around other places for the answer, it appears that what I am asking for is a zoom lens that has a minimum effective (35mm equivalent) focal length of 28mm or less. 28 or 24. Standard appears to be 35 or 38.

So, who makes the best point-and-shoot digital zoom camera that has a 28mm or less minimum focal length?

OK, so how do these compare in real life?

A brief web search for these cameras seems to show that the Kodak V570 with the 23mm lens would be great for those pics where you want to get the whole room into an indoor shot, or the whole house from standing at the curb. I'm not a realtor, but I am looking for some of the same things that a realtor would look for. I've been making my own "panorama" shots for decades (using 110 cameras, mostly), just by taking three pics while panning, and then physically aligning the three prints to look at one super-wide-angle shot. Usually of mountains or beaches. It would be nice to have a camera that creates genuine panoramas. Plus, the Kodak is less expensive.

On the other hand, it has an expensive proprietary battery. And the Panasonics are even worse. The Fujis use ordinary AA batteries.

Alright, who has actual experience with any of these cameras? How do you like them?
