iPod touch screen

by cbasden - 11/2/06 2:38 PM

In the recent discussions about the possibility of an iPod with a touch screen, one of TMV said that their experience with some other touch screen device (a cell phone I believe) was not good, that the touch screen technology was not up to snuff yet. However, the scroll wheel on the current iPod *is* a 'touch screen' function. You aren't pushing a button. It's pressure and friction, like on a mouse pad, that's activating it. I guess putting the same kind of thing into the screen would not allow it to be clear at that point but I would expect that something similar could be done. It would really make sense to come out with a video iPod essentially the same size as the current one with a screen that covers the entire surface (you would typically view it horizontally) and with controls that came up on the screen.

The click wheel on the iPod can work under a thin surface. There are a number of skins that take advantage of this. I bring it up because you can place the click wheel under a color OLED screen. Boo-Yaa-ki! And you would have the best of both worlds, full color and click wheel.

(NT) iPod + OLED + click wheel = touch screen iPod. Nice!

maybe apple can use another material...something that doesn't leave oil stains from your fingerprints on the screen so that it would be still be clear without having to be cleaned all the time.

I think they're going to go with the touch frame

I really don't think they're going to make a touch screen iPod right away. Apple likes to keep their devices slim and a device with a 4-inch touch screen would end up with about only 5 hours of audio playback and probably less than 1 hour of video playback, with the touch frame (or bezzle design) the battery life would be slightly better. The best thing they could do is keep the 5g iPod along with the 6g iPod so you can get either a better screen or a better battery, or just make the 6g iPod complex enough to get better battery life by using more expensive parts. So then they should sell the 5g as a low end iPod for $250 and the 6g as a high end iPod for $400 or $500. Isn't the Archos 604 WiFi (with touch screen) also going for $500?

A couple reasons why touch pads suck...

by robstak - 11/5/06 10:35 AM In reply to: iPod touch screen by cbasden

1) 3g vs 4g ipod... ipod used to be all touch sensative until apple realized that the buttons stopped working after awhile, and PLZ never heat up or cool down ur ipod in ur car... forget about it. so when they moved to 4g they got rid of the buttons and went with clicks.

2) laptop touchpads... pretty much the worst invention ever. not sensative too sensative clicking on stuff i dont want CONSTANTLY. Most of the ppl I know use external mouses 'cuz the touchpad is so annoying.

3) Chocolate... all I've heard about this phone is how the touchpad is annoying. I dont own a chocolate but i do own a VX6700 pocketpc and i constantly have to recalibrate that screen.

Please, just give me buttons I can feel and press. Touch screen is an assinine idea. Just think of the obstruction, the fingerprints, the lack of tactile feedback. WHY NOT JUST PUT THE CONTROLS ON THE BACK! That way you can have a full screen on the front so it looks all pretty and what not. I've been sayin this for some time now and have yet to see it :P
