I too have grown to love FF and am just reading these threadsprior to upgrading to FF2. I seem to be having a "senior moment" please remind me what BB Code is.
Thanks

to insert bold, italic and URLs in text fields in forums like this one. I find it almost indispensible.
Thanks Edh
I used to be able to customize the toolbar with a link to thunderbird in 1.5, but it's gone in FF2. Does anyone know a fix?
If you want to recover your last session automatically when re-starting Firefox then in
Tools -> Options -> Startup -> Main
Change "When Firefox starts" to "Show my windows and tabs from last time"
I keep task manager running full time to catch run away processes and fix them.
FF1.5 was one particular culprit, frequently as a result of navigating to some site (close tab if possible and problem went away).
However, memory usage in FF1.5 was stable at approx 50KK in normal usage, and I was in a habit of exit / restart when it hit about 80KK.
FF2 started at a higher base line of approx 80KK. And when I checked this morning, after leaving it running overnight (4 tabs open, Gmail, Bloglines, 2 @ Cnet forums) memory usage had increased to 102KK.
Exit and restarted FF.
Hmmmm. Restore really works, I got this draft message back intact. (I had copied the message body and was planning to paste back into new reply).
Anyway.
FF2 memory usage back to 71KK.
Conclusions:
1)FF2 baseline memory usage higher on WXP.
2)Memory leaks with long term use of browser still exist.
Note: I also had IE7 running in background with about 8 open tabs. It had started at 27KK and is still sitting at that level.
I did some more testing on IE7 last night. A bit informal, but stopped using FF for several hours and used IE7 instead to complete normal tasks while on WXP.
Gmail, Bloglines, Check forums, followup cross links in del.icio.us, install WMP11, install System Defender, read online documentation, ... The usual.
Ended up with IE7 running with 4 windows and about 25 tabs in total. Pretty typical for me.
Memory load for IE7 sat at 45-70MB with typical of 60MB. Still lower than FF2 but not as much of a difference as previously reported.
Similar loads on Ubuntu with FF2 reported about 120MB typical usage, but the metrics are a bit different.
So far individual tests have varied widely, with some reporting Firefox 2.0 using as much as 25% less than IE7 while others have it used far more than IE7. In my own usage I've found 2.0 to use an average of 10% less than 1.5 with most of the same extensions installed. (I had Spellbound Development, Google Antiphishing, and Session Saver, all of which have now been integrated into Firefox making them a very close configuration.) Compared to IE7 the results are much closer, with IE and Firefox alternating the crown. Anyways, for me it performs faster than its predecessor, all of my extensions work, and a few new features have been integrated, so I'm happy.

concerned.
FF1.5 was very leaky and very ill conditioned with arbitrary sites. It just seemed that I would run into a lot of those sites when I followed links from Bloglines news items.
Got very used to glancing down to see what TM tray control was saying about cpu usage or checking FF1.5 memory usage. Close tabs, close Firefox, force close of Firefox, ...
I am making too many changes due to recent upgrades and testing / deciding about specific extensions / add-ons to do any formal testing. But my impression to date is:
- FF2 seems to use more, but maybe not significantly more, memory than IE7 on WXP
- FF2 is definitely more stable than FF1.5. Memory leaking seems to be significantly reduced. I have not had a single CPU thrash on WXP.
- FF2 on Linux is more of an uncertain issue at the moment. Flash 9 beta is a must use (too many sites require Flash 8+) but it is flaky (first beta). Also doing most of my work with FF2 on just released Ubuntu 6.10, and that system is a crash burn test install. However, my impression is memory leaking under control. Again, not a formal test, just observations of FF while checking other things.
I have seen no reason at all to fallback to FF1.5 and lots of reasons to stay with FF2.
Probably the same observation about IE7 vs IE6, but IE will definitely still be a secondary browser at need.
IE7 opens a new tab immediately to the right of the current active tab. After popping back and forth between IE7 and FF2 I have come to like IE7's behaviour a lot.
Is there a way to tweak FF2 to do the same?
Tab Mix Plus can do that, but the extension is still awaiting an update to make it compatible with Firefox 2.0. Tab Browser Preferences has been updated, though, and should be able to accomplish the same feat. (I haven't used it in a while.)
Hope this helps,
John
