Explorer 7 sucks and theirs no way to uninstall it

by aslakeview - 11/1/06 9:27 AM In reply to: What do you like/dislike about Internet Explorer 7? by John.Wilkinson Moderator

I made the mistake on downloading and installing Explorer 7 and now wished that I had stuck with Explorer 6, The text sizing doesn't add up to what Firefox offers and the largest it gets is still hard to see. 6 would work with the ftp folders by opening the files to view easier, 7 needs a lot more messing around in order to open the files.

To remove it the instructions on the Microsoft web site shows that it can be removed in the add/remove programs option but Explorer doesn't exist there. After uninstalling anything that was installed on the date that I installed 7 it still didn't work. I will only use Firefox now and Explore doesn't exist as far as I'm concerned. I even tried to contact Microsoft to try and sort out the removal problem and instead of sending the complaint off to the correct department to get the proper instructions sent to me they just told me to phone them for support. They should have stayed with a good thing. Explorer 7 is trying to stay up with Firefox and is failing badly.

Nothing new

by Break Man - 11/1/06 9:32 AM In reply to: What do you like/dislike about Internet Explorer 7? by John.Wilkinson Moderator

Would have been nice to see something new. Seems like all Microsoft have done is to give IE the same features that already exist in Firefox.

Still easy to install virus

by discrete_pixels_ - 11/1/06 9:41 AM In reply to: What do you like/dislike about Internet Explorer 7? by John.Wilkinson Moderator

I installed the new version of IE on my wife's computer. Within three days, the kid had used the computer - navigated to some site that offered free ring tones, and managed to install a few virus/spyware/trojens on her PC - and never did get the ring tones..

The kids own PC doesn't have any virus problems at all - this is due me removing Internet Explorer and forcing him to use Firefox. Before firefox, he had tons of virus, downloaders, setc on his PC. Since then his PC has been clean. Looks like I'll end up doing the same to all PCs in the house - just to protect my network from 'mistakes'.

So, my opinion is that - although IE has a new interface (on my wife said "Sucks" cuz she can't find her favorites, her home button, etc) - it is still the same slow software that is still sloppy at security.

BTW - when was the last time you tried to un-install an IE 'plug-in' (such as a rogue tool bar)? If the software didn't provide a way to uninstall - it is near impossible.

Better than before but better than Firefox?

by wallruss - 11/1/06 9:53 AM In reply to: What do you like/dislike about Internet Explorer 7? by John.Wilkinson Moderator

The new IE looks nice. My company had the beta for a while. The interface takes some getting used to but at least it has tabs. It's just that I've grown to love Firefox, especially the extensions. I really only use IE to view the things that you can only view with IE. Improved it may be but does it really give me any value beyond what I already get with Firefox? I don't think so.

I Dumped Firefox for IE7, because...

by john55440 - 11/1/06 10:02 AM In reply to: What do you like/dislike about Internet Explorer 7? by John.Wilkinson Moderator

I really like IE7's interface. In comparison, Firefox 2.0's interface looks clunky and old fashioned. I prefer IE7's handling of RSS, compared to Firefox's default Live Bookmarks. I like IE7's Quick Tabs, which shows an icon view of open tabbed windows. I like IE7's New Tab tab, and...

My experience

by sprasanta7816 - 11/1/06 10:07 AM In reply to: What do you like/dislike about Internet Explorer 7? by John.Wilkinson Moderator

I had been using IE since 4 years. Now I have been switched over to Fire Fox browser. I want to continue with it. It has become my favourite. Thanks for your information in news letter. May I to say anything more?
If you want I can explain my experience. But I think it is enough information to speak out.

IE 7

by Bigguy - 11/1/06 10:15 AM In reply to: What do you like/dislike about Internet Explorer 7? by John.Wilkinson Moderator

I was quite happy with beta 7, with not any kind of a problem. Then along comes the notice from Microsoft to upgrade to IE7. I had read a number of good things that we would enjoy in the full browser. The upgrade resulted in a disaster when all my searches appeared in Chinese language. I spent over 3 hours with the tech support and it got worse with each passing minute. I then said to forget any further help and will continue to use Mozilla's Firefox as my browser. I should have never tried to upgrade, as I really love Firefox and will continue to do so. Microsoft has really slipped in my opinion.

There was need for improvement in many areas? Was relocating navigation functionality part of it? Why make users relearn when there is NO reason for it?

IE7

by vista_noob - 11/1/06 10:38 AM In reply to: What do you like/dislike about Internet Explorer 7? by John.Wilkinson Moderator

I like the new features in IE7. The tabbed browsing, having more than one homepage, creating new tabs. The things I don't like are that a couple of sites I've gone to don't display correctly or even work with the browser. So anyone who uses only one browser or doesn't know of the different options will think there is something wrong with the site or PC. I also don't like that the homepage button is located on the right side so far away from the tabs and the tab options. The fact that the usual menu headings File, Edit, etc. don't appear until you set them to show up this makes it very confusing expecially when trying to add pages to favorites, view favorites or organize along with other tasks.

I was there since the beginning -

by davejyd - 11/1/06 10:49 AM In reply to: What do you like/dislike about Internet Explorer 7? by John.Wilkinson Moderator

I signed up early on (back in win 3.1 days) to be a beta tester, and was offered an opportunity to beta test IE 7.0. Each new ''version'' diring the beta phase was an improvment over the previous one, with the ''final'' version looking pretty good. I like the tabbed pages feature, and some of the security additions.

I am not sure about the Phishing Filter - sometimes it causes a webpage to load improperly (even approved ones) as there is something IE7 doesn't ''recognize''. I think they need to look over their filters and guards, refine them, and make them more ''editable'' by the end user (more than just ''on or off''). Also, IE7 seems slower than other browsers (I still use Firefox as my default browser - for now), is bulky, and the number of add-ons is still small (but growing?)

I do feel that MS is playing ''catch-up'' with other browsers (IE: FireFox). I also feel that this is actually not the ''final'' version, and, as with all windows products, will show improvments and refinements with the release of ''SP2''. I think that they need to come up with something ''New And Improved'' in order to keep the lead in the browser races.

What I like about IE7 was the way it made me have to Restore

by saumeetgs - 11/1/06 11:00 AM In reply to: What do you like/dislike about Internet Explorer 7? by John.Wilkinson Moderator

Warning: Don't trust this first version, wait until at least version 7.1, please!

Since upgrading to this new version of Internet Explorer a couple of weeks ago, I had begun having difficulties. Various programs began having problems which required them to close. The option to debug was there but the link wouldn't work.

Then, each time I'd boot up my laptop would ask to do a CHKDSK (3 Stages) which at first I would let proceed but eventually I started skipping the process most times. Then came the bad news...

"the file $MFT file is missing or corrupt. Run CHKDSK" is the jist of the message I started getting late last week. I had no idea what the MFT was, but even a three hour, five stage CHKDSK with file repairing and checking bad sectors it would be back virtually straight away, so I started a CNET Forum thread. Thank god I did because with in a few hours two of your Moderators had responded. The subject titles got my attention all right - THIS IS VERY BAD said one, the other said MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP YOUR ESSENTIAL FILES NOW!

They went on to explain that MFT means Master File Tape. I think basically it is what tells the hard drive where to find and what to find when it get's a request... is that right? It was explained that it might be as bad as meaning I was going to have to replace my actual HARDDISK, bad news indeed.

They also asked if I was using IE7 and said they had had a couple of reports of this problem from others with IE7. The suggestion was that I might be able to restore my system to before when I upgraded as it had worked for others. Not for me, I had the restore points but when I'd get to the final request to Restore to an earlier date the button to restore wouldn't work.

Fortuneately I listened when I was told one should make regular backups. I have my files on a Maxtor External Harddrive, I push the button every couple of weeks and it backsup any new or changed files and makes an archive copy of the old file as well, all fully automatic after the first time. I also have the original restore disks that came with my ACER Aspire 3500 laptop.

In the end, I had to restore my computor with the Acer disk back to as though I had never turned it on, then cut and paste my other programs and documents from the Maxtor, though some of these files are denying me access since in the Maxtor's opinion, this is a new and different computor than the one it had backed up, therefore it can't restore from the backup.

SO WHAT DO I LIKE ABOUT IE7? Apart from the above, I loved it. I was still learning to use the tabs to thier best effect, but I had found a noticable increase in my network speeds (Lan and WiFi) when I kept all my internet pages within the one platform. Pages opened faster, files downloaded faster and my system was simply responding to any request I made on it with a new sense of urgency.

The lack of clutter on the new interface was the first thing that impressed me with it. Then I began discovering it's features. Being able to choose from several prefered Homepages is another great time saver. I could open IE7 to the site most appropriate, rather than always having to wait for my homepage to open before typing where I want to go or what I want to know.

I am sure you'll forgive me for not being able to recall all the tools and benefits I was enjoying with IE7 since till they repair the bug that ruined my week I am stuck having to use the old Version 6. I really hope they hurry up but since not even your newsletter seemed aware of the problem. I predict that while the numbers affected might be small now, pretty soon it'll be THE major issue for more and more people.

Good luck, and please, WAIT before you upgrade. Internet Explorer Version 7 is NOT READY. When they bring out IE7.1 or maybe 7.2 even, just to be sure. Ignore me at your own peril.

WHAT'S THERE TO LIKE ABOUT IE 7?

by newerawisp - 11/1/06 11:19 AM In reply to: What do you like/dislike about Internet Explorer 7? by John.Wilkinson Moderator

It has crowded the tool bar. The amenties that used to be there have gone. Instead Yahoo search engine has taken a lot of space. I like Yahoo. But it does not have to take all the space on the Tool Bar. IE 7 seems designed to fight Google search Engine rather tan to serve any other purpose. When you try to close any window you get a warning "you are going to close ten windows" where did those windows come from" it is just like you used to get when you tried to close a Netscape window. Except you saw all the windows on your tool bar. You don't see those ten windows on your tool bar. You see only one windows.

Lot of programs that could be used before can'y be used. They have become uncompatible.

Have this IE 7 wiped out the viruses? Obviously not. Yet the legitemate programs can't be used because they require the opening of certain winows that are considered pop ups. Yet IE 7 does open up 9 other windows that it warns you about although you don't see them.

There is only one way to wipe out the viruses. That way is to redevelop internet service. Not through issuing new versions of IE7.
