IE7

by bishopr - 11/1/06 6:43 AM In reply to: Will you download and use Internet Explorer 7? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Only problem was its failure to display my links as I had them laid out in 6. Very impressed with Microsoft phone support on this. Got through quickly, got assistance AND they actually called back to follow up.

Tool bars

by wangbang - 11/1/06 6:53 AM In reply to: Will you download and use Internet Explorer 7? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I'm glad for the update, but I mainly use Firefox now. One thing that bothers me about IE7 is that they changed the position of some things on the tool bar, like the refresh button. Also, I like to show the Menu Bar, but I like it at the very top. I can't seem to change it, even after unlocking the toolbars.

IE7

by thom14 - 11/1/06 7:04 AM In reply to: Will you download and use Internet Explorer 7? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I have downloaded it and have tried to use it but until I know all the parts and secrets it is confusing. also it has taken over all of my old browsers and has dominated my system so far. I found using the photo part to be extremely well done and was able to email pictures easily. however I needed to down load an other part in order to do that.
like I said it is easy to use but until all the componets are figurred out I am some what confused.

Will you download and use Internet Explorer 7?

by Manhattan - 11/1/06 7:05 AM In reply to: Will you download and use Internet Explorer 7? by Marc Bennett Moderator

First of all, IE 7.0 is not the newest version. In Microsoft's obsession to constantly create new software and throw it on the market whether it works or not (witness the Vita journey from Beta to full version and back again, and this situation goes on lately with everything, the newest disaster is Windows Media Player 11, which Mr. Gates himself stopped at the Beta version). Microsoft is not my Rock of Gibraltar it once was. The newest version of the Internet Explorer is 7.0.5730.11. What is even worse is that my ISP, in which Microsoft is a partner (Sympatico/MSN) still refuses to deal with Microsoft 7.0. Also, since Outlook Express used to be part of Internet Explorer, I have no idea whether it still is or not. Outlook Express never worked and never will. Outlook Express' disaster, whether by design or by accident, started the creation of at least a dozen small software developers who develop nothing but software to make Outlook Express run. Since Microsoft actually "certifies" them with a nice diploma, it must be aware about the problems with Outlook Express. Microsoft Outlook, part of the Office Suite, is a gigantic overkill for an Internet browser and a duplication of services which are installed in other part of Microsoft's Office Suite. I found all this out when Microsoft insisted that I download 7.0.5730.11 when I started Beta testing of Windows Live OneCare 1.5 (also here, Microsoft could not wait for version 1.0 to work before it almost threw version 1.5 almost on the market). Beta version 1.5 is a nightmare, it will remove all protective software (firewalls, anti-virus software, even its own anti-malware, Windows Defender), and all is now combined in Windows Live OneCare 1.0 and 1.5. The Beta testing of 1.5 is done under "Group Policy," which means you hand over your computer to Microsoft. Of course, I signed a disclaimer giving them access rights to my computer. I never allowed them to turn it upside down. Now, the firewall of Windows Live OneCare 1.5 is open for THE LAST FIVE DAYS. I get to do Beta testing free of charge for Microsoft (but that was my fault), and threw 36 years of working in IT in. I did msconcigs, reconfigurations of start-up with very vague instruction of Microsoft's support people. I AM nervous about not having a firewall, but I cannot configure it because for five days now I get the message, if I try, "Windows Live OneCare cannot change your firewall settings at this time. Please try again later or restart the computer. If the problem persists, contact support. Did that, and screen full of topics appeared. The first "Help" had questions like, "Do you want to know what a virus is?" in it. If you are a volunteer Beta tester, you get to use Microsoft's e-mail support. So far, I have sent in five, all referring to the firewall and all referring to the same incident number.
Is Microsoft faltering? Not yet, but it happened to bigger fish. There IS a connection between the more and more absent Mr. Gates (the greatest marketing genius this world has ever seen) and the above-noted happenings (Mr. Gates never was the greatest computer genius, nor did he ever claim he was, but he had an uncanny instinct to select the right people to work for him).

Should we install Internet Explorer 7? No, we should not. There is no really marketable improvement, and Microsoft still does not get the difference between "Close" and "Exit." Do we need a Windows Media Player 11? No, we do not. 10 is already complicated enough. Then again, Windows Media Player is free, and is one of the miracles Microsoft is able to develop. It is almost like, "what if there was a war and nobody came?" Let's try it! We do not need new Window versions each year. What happens is that Microsoft tells us, "last year, we sold you a really bad Windows version. Get rid of it! Use our new Windows version Vista!" And, we idiots cannot get to the store fast enough to buy it. That applies for corporate and home-user clients of Microsoft.

Not for shared computers

by gullclaw - 11/1/06 7:21 AM In reply to: Will you download and use Internet Explorer 7? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I downloaded IE7 to the computer that I am shring with my wife and we are both admins. It worked well under my account but my wife's had a lot of scripting erros on most of the pages she opened. I called MS support "in India" and I sopke with "John " who got confused about the issue and transfered me to "Tony" who I spent one hour on the phone clicking on this and that and restarting the PC. Finally he told to me that he is having the same issue on his PC and he would contact me back within 24 hours. I removed it and went back to IE6 and it all went back to normal. I would wait until this version of IE is fixed by MS.

IE 7

by mrskelly - 11/1/06 7:25 AM In reply to: Will you download and use Internet Explorer 7? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I can be a bit of a betaholic and so I've been playing with it for a while. I like it, especially the tabs and the colors and the layout is easier on the eyes. Ask me about the Office 2007 beta and I'll give you a completely different response.

Not a stable product

by ezbesthost1 - 11/1/06 7:29 AM In reply to: Will you download and use Internet Explorer 7? by Marc Bennett Moderator

My wifes laptop has RC1 and it is mediocre. I removed IE7 from my flea market computer by going back to an IE6 configuation, that was the only way. It now has FF2 which does not have all my favorite extensions available. Back to IE7, I have seen too many people come to me complaining that it has trashed their machine. When I give them a quote on how much it would be to recover their system they are understandably upset at Microsoft.

Are you kidding me !

by 4jackie40d - 11/1/06 7:34 AM In reply to: Will you download and use Internet Explorer 7? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I got rid of EVERY tiny part of IE long ago and you think I have gone a bit off in the woods and would download that stuff to my computer like I want the new worm which changes its code every 30 minutes on my computer . .
It would attach its self to any one whom uses IE for anything it seems, it is what it attacks from my last white paper reading on the net on another site on Tech Republic ! So all of you whom downloaded it GOOD LUCK ! !

Downloaded but don't use it

by hagosrush - 11/1/06 7:38 AM In reply to: Will you download and use Internet Explorer 7? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I have IE7, it sucks. It seems like its a cheap imitation of Firefox/Netscape. Microsoft is obviously feeling left out so they tried to catch up with this POS of a browser, BTW did I mention that there are still a million pop ups that come with it. I'm actually going to uninstall it b/c some sites don't load on IE7. Screw this, I'll stick with Firefox.

Internet Explorer 7 "going to use it"

by katajoe - 11/1/06 7:43 AM In reply to: Will you download and use Internet Explorer 7? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Already used it but started and my college had not updated their computers and tested it for ie 7 in Sept; and are now still testing out the 7 to work with our media classes.

I notified them in September on first class day and they have been admittedly slow catching up. So I went back to 6 until this week when I will again download 7.

It took a bit getting used to but I have confidence that msft would not have come up with 7 without benefit and future benefit. My confidence is always with Microsoft and I also think their pricing for everything they have is on the benefit side.

No!!!

by Raymond Van Ham - 11/1/06 7:45 AM In reply to: Will you download and use Internet Explorer 7? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I don't know who is steering Microsoft these days, but whoever is making the decisions is blowing it. Microsoft's "no support to force you to upgrade policy" has effectively been driving me non-microsoft products. I'm even looking at the ramifications of going MAC. All I know is that IE6 is buggy and has security holes that the illustrious leaders at Microsoft have chosen to ignore. To me...no support means no deal. I am moving on without them and their new releases.

I had to UNinstall it.

by RVaughan - 11/1/06 7:50 AM In reply to: Will you download and use Internet Explorer 7? by Marc Bennett Moderator

The survey will be skewed. There was no selection for I used it and uninstalled.

The primary reason I uninstalled was a conflict with my HP Printer. The scan software would not work without an awkward work around. The HP techs said to use the work around or uninstall as they had no fix.

I also had proplems with some PDF files. I also had problmes with Outlook and with Zinio that occured the same time as the HP problems but I cannot blame those on 7.0. My wife's team and customers had to block their customer's using 7.0 to eliminate problems with images and PDF's, an important part of their business.

In fairness, the only problem I know for certain is the HP. BUT, if that is not solvable yet, there likely are other conflicts. I must continue with Firefox. IE6.0 and Firefox cover all my apparent needs.
