New SpySweeper With AntiVirus-5.2.3.2120

by mlhhammer - 10/25/06 9:36 PM

Webroot has upgraded to a new 2in1, anti-spy with Sophos anti-virus.If you already have a subsciption, you will get an free upgrade when you update the program; need to restart. If your using dial-up it will take from 2 to 3 hours to load 12.4MB, and this download will be slower than normal. So far everything is working fine; no big cpu or big slow pc problems like 5.0- of course they eventually fixed that.Interface uses a grey tone; I don't like it.The upgrade extended my subscription 30 days, because I think they give the 30 day trial offer with the anti-virus, but after that they will ask for $10 more to keep/subscribe for the anti-virus portion only; can you believe that! So far no conflicts with my free standing McAfee anti-virus thank goodness.I've heard SunbeltSoftware Counterspy Beta 2.0 will also try a 2in1 spy/virus hybrid. New trend in security software?NaiveMelody NYC 10-26-06~12:35am e.s.t.

5.2 Anti-Virus any good?

by kegizsftzp - 10/26/06 6:03 AM In reply to: New SpySweeper With AntiVirus-5.2.3.2120 by mlhhammer

I just downloaded 5.2 yesterday but I was wondering if the free anti-virus is any good. I would like to drop Anti-Vir and use spy sweepers anti-virus. Is it better than a stand alone free anti-virus app such as my Anti-Vir?

SpySweeper5.2 plus Anit-virus if you pay $10=uncool move

by mlhhammer - 10/26/06 8:43 PM In reply to: 5.2 Anti-Virus any good? by kegizsftzp

It's to early to tell. Sophos is a British HQ'd software company that has worked in the enterprise realm but not in the puplic consumer end.Although recently, they released their own free standing Sophos Rootkit to the public as freeware; guess where Webroot got it's rootkit detector in it's anti-spy portion since 5.0. Common sense would say that a separate anti-spy and av would be better, but having a 2in1 anti-spy with virus abilities would be a bit more beneficial if it could also "co-exist" with a free full standing av. I have McAfee free standing av, and have used both ss/av and mcafee scannning for the past two days, no problems, no warnings, no bad signs, yet=thank goodness. We have to wait till at least two mainstream sites test the ss/av; and it better come up in the top 1 or 2 spot, because many people WILL NOT PAY AN EXTRA $10 to keep the av. Webroot is riding the barbed wire fence since 5.0 when a sizeable number of regulars/life longs couldn't deal with 5.0 problems and defected, I've read about them amongest many forums/venues/reviews. And I and the other faithfull who have weathered 5.0 and watch it improve, eventually, see an upgrade where we have to PAY AN EXTRA $10 to keep the av=BOGUS/UNCOOL. There's a media term called the 'Q factor'=how your image is perceived by the public on a positive to negative ratings, after 30 days when Webroot asks for that $10, Webroot will be on trial- probably lowering it's 'Q factor' from 'great anti-spyware specialist' to 'greedy anti-spyware specialist'. I've paid my $30 for a good anti-spy, they upgrade- why should I pay more-$40?? They should absorb the cost, since we already have the av structure and av definitions downloaded in 5.2, "give us the loyal", the benefits- for those of us who have and will upgrade till 2007 for example, then you can re-institute your $30/$40 price structure later.Sorry, folks had to get that out of my system. Additional notes: despite some of Webroot's knowledge base, when you upgrade now,you will get essentially the full 30 day trial type with full anti-virus capabilities,I've already updated both as and av def's,after 30 days (and if they don't have a 'change of heart') there will be Webroot's hand in your pocket asking for $10 to keep the av portion=additionally - you keep the anti-spy just as normally, you have the option to turn off the av, if you fear conflicts with your free standing av(I haven't had any problems),my scans with new ss/av are taking 15-20 minutes longer than before, if you remember the big 5.0 problems a few monthes ago, well it's not here, things are running smoothly but with just a few seconds delays here and there=noticeable but not maddeningly annoying, for me when I updated on the 25th, I got an extra 30 days added to my soon to expire subscription=bonus, the grey tone their using in the interface(which I don't like the grey) reminds me of "institutionalized grey" the kind of grey you would see in prison or mental hospitals to keep the 'inmates calm', yeah, 30 days later when they beg for their $10, the outraged will need the grey to keep them calm. Remember,Weboot, the 'Q factor' will be on trial- absorb the costs and give us the loyal- the benefits of the upgrade. NaiveMelody NYC 10-26-06~11:43pm e.s.t.- The Weight- The Band

Historically running 2 AV programs is not recommended ???

by jrwooden - 10/30/06 4:10 AM In reply to: New SpySweeper With AntiVirus-5.2.3.2120 by mlhhammer

I have always read/heard that (historically at least) running 2 AV programs is not recommended due to potential for conflicts between them and higher consumption of system resources - has this changed?

Is Spy Sweeper's AV designed to overlay other existing AV installations?

I'm not sure I really NEED a belt and suspenders...

thanks,
Jim

SpySweeper 5.2.3.2120 Disappointing

by AJ North - 10/30/06 5:30 AM In reply to: New SpySweeper With AntiVirus-5.2.3.2120 by mlhhammer

Participating in the beta version of SS 5.2, I was cautiously optimistic that Webroot had a worthwhile advancement. Since one should NOT have more than one real-time A/V active and since I already have an A/V suite I like, that component was disabled (but not on-demand A/V scanning). (Remember: the same principle of not running more than one real-time A/V scanner also applies for anti-spyware and firewall software.) My SS subscription was extended by a month for testing the beta, Webroot said in the announcement.

I contacted Webroot through their Beta Reporting to learn the specs of the Sophos A/V engine they are using: did it scan e-mail (incoming or bi-directionally); would it scan all files and folders, including compressed; would it monitor IM, for example - and to clarify that I did indeed need to pay an additional amount for virus definition updates, but did not receive a reply. I did, however, notice a slight additional 'hit' to the CPU over SS 5.0.7.1608.

When SS 5.2.3.2120 was released on 23 Oct, I downloaded and installed it. Immediately, I experienced a system slowdown. When opening other programs, loading time was noticeably increased. Opening a new page in I.E. 7.0, or clicking on active links on a page (and in e-mail) resulted in a wait-time of 15 to 30 seconds before the page would open and fully load; CPU use would remain at or near 100%, as measured by the Task Manager. (My computer is a Dell Inspiron 8200, P-4M, Win XP Pro SP2 with all updates, on broadband.)

Calling Webroot's tech assistance revealed that, indeed, the Sophos A/V did not scan e-mail (nor IM); there was no information available on files and folders, nor any feedback [yet] about system slow-downs. I plan to contact them again by telephone this week. In the meantime, I un-installed SS 5.2.3.2120 and re-installed SS 5.0.7.1608.

I would agree with an earlier comment that perhaps Webroot would be better advised to offer separate programs for each specific function, which could be integrated under a common Control Console. That would allow consumers to chose individual security components and - in theory, at least - make each component smaller and less of a resource hog. (As always, compatibility issues will become a factor.)

To conclude, I am not particularly enamored of the direction Webroot seem to be heading.

cnet's review of Webroot spy sweeper 5.2 with antivirus

by mlhhammer - 11/1/06 9:06 PM In reply to: New SpySweeper With AntiVirus-5.2.3.2120 by mlhhammer

cnet has just released their editor's review- search: 'webroot spy sweeper 5.2 with antivirus' above, reviewed by Robert Vamosi, Nov.1, 2006. So far I've had it for a week now, there is a few delays when opening some apps and other lag times, just like in the beginning of 5.0 but not as severe. For those of us who remained loyal and weathered 5.0, we know that it will eventually improve; our pc will adapt to the webroot and webroot will "assimilate" our pc; providing us the best antispyware protection available and now with optional light anti-virus protection. And of the av in Spysweeper, it seems, it can 'co-exist' with another free standing anti-virus; cnet claims it works with ZoneAlarm's av, and I have been using it with McAfee's av, updating and scanning=not at the same time of course. Those of us who are regular subscriber's, have already received the official upgrade notice in our e-mail box 10-30/31, and if you do upgrade you will get an extra 30 days extension. Full scans and custom scans now take about 15-20 minutes longer than before=(50 minutes to 1 hour), the quick scan(used to be 'scan where spyware resides') takes 20+ minutes total- more reasonable. As time goes on and if you option not to use the av, the scan times should get faster; back to normal. NaiveMelody NYC 11-2-06~12:07am e.s.t.- No sleep till Brooklyn - Beastie Boys
