You don't have to pay the subscription fee to be able to use the Tivo for basic recording. You'll just need to program it yourself to record when and what you want.
There's a Guide feature on the Tivo that *should* work even without the subscription, just highlight the program you want and hit record. Even if the Guide doesn't work you just program it like a VCR.
After using the Tivo for a while, you'll probably see the value of paying the subscription but either way, check it out.
On the shelves at the local BB and even Walmart are hard disk DVRs that don't require subscription. I avoid sharing exact model numbers since the post would be out of date in just a few weeks.
What I usually find when I press such a point is the person with the question didn't get out and look at what's out there or is in some country where such is not offered.

Thanks to all who replied. All I've ever found at Best Buys, Circuit City, et al are models that purport to ones having to sign up with TIVO or another service to work. If you're saying that I can just use one of these like a VCR, I'm ecstatic - well maybe that's a bit of a stretch. Still, thanks! Maybe I should have posed my question differently, but thank you all so much for your valuable responses.
