My system XP SP2 is more than adequet. What is script runner un plug? Required liveUpdate installer? that wasn't on my install disk.. My validation one time says yes, then NO Im so comfused. I do a small home refinance business from my home , Fax You name it.I am literate enough. This is bigger than I can figure out. My brother uses McAfee and says it is great. Norton on my old system was perfect. It had ME and no probs. Now, MY PC is so screwed up I have to take it in to restore it. Take everything out and start all over. Those tech guys at Symantec dread my name when it popps up HA HA They seem to be in such a hurry and don't listen. MY next question, is if I change security with them will I encounter problems with my ISP Netzero. A package. Any suggests? Please do not even say AOL. I probably need to get rid of it all together. EH?Sorry if this is a bit much, but as you can see I've been stressed out. MY daughter surfs, Bloggs Yadda Yadda and we fight because I worry about all the changes that are constantly allowed and so on. You wouldn't believe all the mess. So enough about me. I'm going back to work, and check for a response tomorrow K? If you even decide I'm worth it. F^%#*%^*(ing Mess!! Ta Ta. Even If it is too much? Please atleast say your not even going to touch that one. I'd respect that more than no reply ideas where to go etc. Anything . Bye-bye

Antivirus

by Rob27 - 10/23/06 9:06 AM In reply to: the best of internet security by damom111

I have tried the lot of them and settled on Trend Micro PC-Cillin a year ago. My criteria is that the program not imbed itself too deeply and Trend Micro works great without all the tentacles. I had to reformat to get rid of Zone Alarm which blocked my own network and it took me a month to get all the Norton junk out of my system. Trend Micro 2007 version includes anti spyware which does a great job. Program update definitions at least twice a day also.

Hi: I recommend BitDefender, because is easy to use and very good detecting, viruses, trojans, spyware, malware, etc, etc.
I got 9 Pro Version, since last year and i am very pleased with this product.
Until now i don't have any kind of problems dealing with all the stuff i said before.

Greetings from Mexico

Thanks so much for everyone's opinion and advice. I am still undecided on what to do, which is OK since I still have 5o days left. I am unhappy with Norton, so I will change not sure exactly to what.
thanks again and keep the advice coming.

Internet Security Suites

by The Real Iceman - 10/23/06 12:51 PM In reply to: the best of internet security by damom111

Norton is a one of the worst resource hogs I have have seen; as well as being ''not user friendly''.

Norton also winds approximately 250 lines of code into your Registry, which makes it a pain to Install or Uninstall at times.

In my own opinion Trend Micro's, "Pc-cillin Internet Security Suite" comes the closest to what I need and want to keep my PC Secure.

It covers all of the bases, and can be left as default or configured as tightly or loosely as needed.

I have beta tested and used a lot of software over the last 25 years and Trend Micro Pc-cillin is the answer for me.

It is Zone Alarm Suite for me thnak you!

by jeroldo - 10/23/06 2:05 PM In reply to: Internet Security Suites by The Real Iceman

Personally, haveing used virtually all of the various security and anti-virus programs that are available, I have finally settled down to using just four. They are:

Zone Alarm Suite. (A pay program)
Anti-Vir (Free)
Spy-Bot Search & Destroy (Free)
and
Ad-Aware (Also Free)

I have had great results with these programs and have found that while all require a bit of learning, only Zone
Alarm is very complicated. Still, one can use just the
default settings and get by quite nicely.

Using these four programs have allowed me to remain free of all of the many nasties that seemingly infect so many computers these days.

If you wish to use all "free" programs, you can certainly use the free version of Zone Alarm. I use the paid version of Zone Alarm because I like the ID protection which is not available in the free version.
You would be suprised how often the various sites we all visit ask for various passwords, account numbers and pin numbers that are on our computers. ZA Suite and ZA Pro both can prevent those numbers from being sent out over the net.

Best Wishes,
jercatchesfish

Webroot SpySweeper, ZoneAlarm Pro, and NAV2006

by ytvette - 10/23/06 1:56 PM In reply to: the best of internet security by damom111

These three have done a great job for me. I'm contemplating going for a different AV when my Norton subscription expires. Some users have reported problems installing NAV2007 with SpySweeper and ZA. From what I've read, Eset's NOD32 looks powerful and light on system resources. SpySweeper is a quality product! I use Spybot S&S and Adaware SE for backup scanners but SpySweeper catches everything.

Can anyone tell me about your experience with NOD32? I'd appreciate it!

Free or pay. Suite or seperate?

by JonathanCase - 10/23/06 2:17 PM In reply to: Webroot SpySweeper, ZoneAlarm Pro, and NAV2006 by ytvette

I think the post (about 12 up) by cdellisjr is about right, and the link is worth clicking on.
Many have mentioned that scanners such as AdAware and Spybot aren't so useful any more, I think they still are, but there are more powerful available. Check out SuperAntispyware, free for on-demand, pay version for realtime. I use Spyware Terminator, free for realtime.
A big thing is to stay up to date.(I don't just mean definitions/patches)
What was good once, might not be now. (eg Norton.) There are specialty security forums/newsletters that give an insight into what's hot now, what has deteriorated, what's buggy etc. (Scott's, Castlecops, Wilders...good to have a browse. Find Scott's newsletter forum, newsletter Aug/06 for a comparison of AV's. Interesting approach.) And there is seemingly no limit to what you can do. Much of it for free. Sandboxes, Hardware firewalls/routers (not free) Ghost programs, hosts files, all sorts of stuff. For most of us, (self included) a good AV like Avast, Avira, or AVG, a realtime antispy like SpywareTerminator and a good antitrojan like AVG or Asquared, plus a firewall and a scan with Housecall or Kaspersky (both online) plus 2 or 3 demand scanners/tools should be adequate. http://www.scotsnewsletter.com/83.htm

Norton Internet Security

by ulara - 10/23/06 1:59 PM In reply to: the best of internet security by damom111

I have had very good results with this program and have been using it for about a year and a half now on all of my computers. The only complaint I have is that the Anti-Spam could be better. I use it with MS Outlook and it mostly does a really good job filtering spam but not since the latest updates...it only seems to catch about a third now.

I would not use the renew function. If you don't mind not having the latest version it is less expensive to just buy it. I just bought three new Internet Security 2006 disks for $9 each with free shipping on eBay as I only have a couple of months left on my current subscriptions. After the new version comes out, the previous one is easy to come by for less than $15 each....just make sure it is a new, unregistered product you are buying....believe it or not there are some dopes that are trying to sell their used, already registered product!

One thing though...you do have to uninstall and reinstall, even if it's the same product. But I think it's worth the extra trouble with all the money saved.

damom111,

by Maggie6243 - 10/23/06 3:16 PM In reply to: Norton Internet Security by ulara

I'm sure you have read all of our posts by now. The best thing for you to do is pick a few anti spyware programs that are free or have a free trial and give them a try. Some you'll like and some you probably won't. If you don't like some of them, uninstall and try something else. Just make sure you have a good anti virus installed. Trial and error is how most of us end up with the protection we have on our computers. Everyones needs are different, so everything doesn't work for everyone. The only thing I'll suggest is GET RID OF NORTONS!! The other AV's listed throughout this thread are so much better. And pay attention to everyone who tells you a few individual programs are a lot better than a suite. Each individual program is looking for differant problems, which gives you better security. And if one stops working, you still have the others to fall back on. It's a lot safer that way. Hope you find what your looking for...Maggie

My last gasp!

by saleh.2201 - 10/23/06 6:30 PM In reply to: damom111, by Maggie6243

I still can't believe no one has addressed the Achelles heel in NOrton suites. THE sub-par firewall! It rates among the crappiest of all! Also, I have found a program called Process Guardian that lets me choose which application can or can not run with out my consent. If you have any viruses or trojans, you can deny access to any program (sot of like a mini firewall) Also it is free at diamondcs.com. I like to have COMPLETE control over any program that askes to run on my computer. Consider it another layer of protection that you control.

Thanks Maggie

Yes, I am definitely getting rid of Norton. Sounds like Zone Alarm Suite is really good, that is what I am leaning towards. I have now downloaded Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spyware Blaster, and Spybot Search and Destroy. Not sure exactly how to use, but am learning as I go. I also put Windows Registry Mechanic in, but it is the free version and you don't get all the benefits. The Norton for me does a good job on the Spam filtering.
Thanks again, Stacey

Best Internet Security Suite

by wintersunset - 10/23/06 9:04 PM In reply to: the best of internet security by damom111

A point to remember if renewing a security suite is, will it be compatable with Vista if you decide to upgrade to it. Maybe it would be best to check with the security suites tech.help to find out if their new products are Vista friendly before paying for somthing that will not work with Vista. This is also worth considering for any stand alone virus or firewall products whether bought or free.

V-Com System Suite 6/7 Professional

by krystie8 - 10/24/06 6:40 AM In reply to: the best of internet security by damom111

Better than either Norton or McAfee, lighter on resources, virtually trouble free. Currently at System Suite 6 Professional but in the process of releasing System Suite 7 Professional. Wait a bit for some good deals (Amazon?) or go to WalMart today and pick up System Suite 6 Professional for 40 bucks.

SS6 uses Trend Micro's antivirus/antispyware engines, Sygate's firewall, and has a very nice collection of utilities to keep your computer in good working condition. -kd5-
