Can we please get a review on the HP IPAQ 6945 as soon as possible. A lot of people have been waiting for this thing for WAY too long and a CNET review would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hmm, it looks like just about PDA Phone to me. Ho hum?

I really agree. This unit may be the best piece of tech to come out in quite some time. In theory it has all the features one could want for travel, for connection and for work. But, does it do what it is supposed to do. I really want a CNet review before I plunk down $600.

So far, my IPAQ 6945 has exceded my expectations. The unit has an intuitive design, and I've experienced no problem in setting up wifi, turning features off and on, and accessing programs. I installed my cingular sim card and it worked seamlessly, although the phone does not work quite as well as my old, generic Nokia (not bad, just not 100% as good, probably 95%).
I've yet to try out the GPS, as I don't have a memory card to store maps (I ordered two memory cards and am awaiting the shipment).
I too would like to read a review, to see what the pros say, but so far, for me, it's love at first byte!
john the write could you tell me more? I want to buy one REAL REAL bad, but I am wondering if/when Cingular will carry this phone. If the do, i would think with a contract it would be much much cheaper. What is the warranty like? Is the Bluetooth easy to use? I have a car with Bluetooth on it, but I am a tech moron. Tell me more good things, PLEASE and THANKS
DoubleB72,
Disclaimer: I'm no expert, so please read anything with a mb of salt.
This is my first pocket pc, although I had a palm m130 in the past. The device comes with a one year warranty; although, as always, you can purchase various extended warranties through HP (I took my chances and chose none).
I also have Cingular, and transferred my sim card into the device with bated breath (I always relied on the dealers to set up my phones). It recognized it and worked flawlessly.
Bluetooth is a cinch. There are ''radio'' icons for each wireless connection on the ''Today'' screen, and you simply click on Bluetooth button to set it up (I have a motorolla hands-free headphone/mic, and it recognized it and set it up right away - again, flawless).
Wifi was a little tricky to set up, mostly because I do NOT - at any time - want to connect to the internet via Cingular's network, thereby incurring charges. But setting it up was definitely do-able for someone with a little experience.
The GPS was confusing for me, but I contacted Tech support, and they guided me through it (incidently, they we're GREAT). The GPS works great, comes with a sixty day Navtec software trial, which I think I will purchase when it runs out.
So far, no downfalls to the device, except maybe the phone works a little slower than my vernerable Nokia, but you can't have everything. Signal strength is good. Good sound, no issues except the slight delay when dialing a phone using the on-screen keypad, as mentioned above. Also, I can't get streaming mp3 to work - i.e. online radio stations, etc. I'm still trying to figure it out, but maybe that file format is not supported yet. Other mp3 files and wav files play just find. I even made my own ringtone using a Toy Story sound bite
''Buzz Lightyear to Star Command, come in Star Command.''
Ok, I'm a nerd, but my kids like it.
Anyway, that's my experience so far. Hope that helps.
John
PS: Sorry it took a few days to reply, I don't have a chance to check the forums often.
If you havent already... buy it. Not sure what most of the comments about running Slow and Rebooting are all about. I have had mine for 3 weeks and had to reboot once when setting everything up... Treo, I rebooted almost daily and slow, yikes the 650 was one of the most frustrating units I ever used. I love this HP...
I am not impressed. It is slow, crashes often and I have to do a soft reboot way too often as it often freezes with Push e-mail from my server. I could almost live with the required reboots if the thing weren't so damn slow. I often find myself pushing the buttons more than once as I think it is freezing when in fact it is just sluggish. Stay away, there many better devices.
Setup and fully operational, the 6945 HP iPAQ make Palm products Pale in comparison. It is a total PDA including a very functional affordable National GPS. This unit is worth every dime of the cost - from the add-on storage, (I bought 2 1gig cards) to the complete array of OEM and Third Party accessories… you cant go wrong. I have had blackberry’s (great units), Treos, and T-Mobile PDA's, and frankly the unlocked HP on your choice of networks - ROCKS..!! Having this much power in one device is everything a business owner could ever ask for !! You wont be disappointed.
