Can someone please help me select a digi cam?

by JohnnyDeppishot - 10/18/06 1:58 PM

I have a couple of specifications.
-more than 5MP
-preferably more optical zoom than 3x
-under $400

One of the main reasons I want it is because I will be travelling to Disney World and I would love to take quality photos of the fireworks shows and nighttime parades.
All my previous cameras have not taken quality photos of these events, even though I have practiced over and over with my previous cameras.
Any suggestions for a new camera that can do this?
Thank You.

Selecting a digicam

I sold digital cameras for about a year and I would recommend Canon above all other brands. The other brands you have to be careful about the particular model for quality. If you look at Sony, look for the Carl Zeiss lens and if it's Kodak make sure you get the Schneider-Kruznach (sp?) lens. The optics are very important for the quality of the shot (it doesn't matter how many megapixels you have if you have bad optics). If you go over 3 or 4X optical, I would look for image stabilization. This used to be very pricey but you can find this technolgy for under $400 now. If you're wanting to take fireworks shot, don't forget to buy a tripod if you don't already have one. Pretty much all good quality cameras have a decent night photography mode. Also, I rely pretty heavily on the reviews on this web site for my information. Good luck!

Canon A710

I took my Canon A610 to Disney and it took great pics . I would check out the A710 with 6x (?) optical zoom and I believe they both have a fireworks mode you can select. I didn't take any fireworks pics unfortunately as my kids were in bed by that time rolled around - next year !

can anyone else please help me?

Everytime I look for a camera that I think will work, it says something negative. Or it doesn't work well in low light which I need it for.

If you read reviews on cameras you will always find a negative because reviewers always compare a camera to perfection. And there is no perfect camera.

If you want a camera that works well in low light for under $400, your only have two cameras to choose from.

The Fujifilm F20 and F30.

They are almost identical, but the F20 does not have the manual controls (shutter priority and Aperture priority).

Fujifilm makes the least noisy CCD sensor for small cameras, and can use higher ISO settings that the other cameras. Therefore it works better in low light.

Some of the newer small cameras from other camera makers are showing higher ISO settings than previous, but it is not due to a less noisy CCD sensor. But those new settings usually have an asterisk attached to show limitations.

Until there is a breakthrough in CCD sensor design and/or manufacturing, the low light limitations will continue to be with us.
