USB 1.1 vs. 2.0

by BB2nite - 10/13/06 9:28 AM

How can I tell which USB my PC has? It doesn't seem to be mentioned in the owner's manual, the sales invoice, nor anywhere else where I know to look. Is it 1.1, or is it 2.0 (seems most new external hard drives state "2.0"). Thanks for any info.

Open Control Panel. . .

by Coryphaeus - 10/13/06 10:38 AM In reply to: USB 1.1 vs. 2.0 by BB2nite

Click the System icon, click the Hardware tab, click Device Manager, click the + next to USB controllers. If one of the entries is ''Enhanced'' you have USB-2. If not, you have USB-1.

Invasion

by Akeyserlingk - 10/20/06 5:48 AM In reply to: Open Control Panel. . . by Coryphaeus

Please help. I think I have been invaded. When I open my IE 6 with service pack 2, it does no longer open on my designated URl but comes up with
http://xtoff/

I have tried changing it back to my own home page but to no avail. I have tried several spy busting programs, Defender, Ca etc but they find nothing.

Connect any USB 2.0 device

by banshdharm - 10/15/06 11:48 AM In reply to: USB 1.1 vs. 2.0 by BB2nite

and if your computer has USB 1.1 you will get a message saying "this device can perform faster if connected to a USB 2.0 port".

Look at the port

by Ptolom - 10/20/06 6:01 AM In reply to: USB 1.1 vs. 2.0 by BB2nite

If you look at the USB symbol next to the socket there should be a '+' symbol which, as far as I'm aware, identifies the socket at USB v2.

Backwards Compatibility

by TreknologyNet - 10/20/06 6:42 AM In reply to: USB 1.1 vs. 2.0 by BB2nite

At the moment, "USB" is backwards compatible, meaning that version 2.0 devices will work on version 1.1 hardware.

Knowing Miscrosoft, there is no guarantee that version 3 will do this, but for now there's no need to worry.

update to USB 2.0 from 1.1

by doublb - 10/20/06 12:42 PM In reply to: Backwards Compatibility by TreknologyNet

I am running a Compaq Presario desktop with Win98SE. The USB ports are 1.1 and I want to know if I can update them, somehow, to USB 2.0. Is there a software update or is it time for me to buy a new PC?

You cant!

by sum42guy2k - 10/20/06 4:35 PM In reply to: update to USB 2.0 from 1.1 by doublb

you cant update software. and i would say, it is way past time you upgrade.
now with microsoft releasing windows vista next month (november 2006) i would waitand buy a computer already loaded with it, or you can buy now, and upgrade later, although that costs more in the long run, but also get a good pc, or mac if you want, and you can also run microsoft xp, and soon vista on mac, so i suggest get a mac, and buy vista. also get a good processor.

Hardware upgrade - not software.

by jegabele - 10/20/06 7:06 PM In reply to: update to USB 2.0 from 1.1 by doublb

If you have an empty pci slot, you can buy an inexpensive USB 2.0 card that will give you four or more ports from just about any dealer that sells computer upgrades, including office supply stores and online and local electronics stores.

Win98 doesn't handle USB 2.0

by Len Bates - 10/23/06 2:51 PM In reply to: Hardware upgrade - not software. by jegabele

My understanding is that installing USB 2.0 requires a later version of Windows. I have '98 SE on a custom box and was told by the guys that built the computer that it can only work at 1.1 unless I upgrade the Op System.

Win 98 and USB 2.0?

by lwvirden - 11/3/06 12:14 PM In reply to: Win98 doesn't handle USB 2.0 by Len Bates

The info at http://www.everythingusb.com/usb2/faq.htm seems to imply that there are USB 2.0 Win98 drivers available...
