IE7 Desktop Icon

by mrsubway - 8/16/06 4:26 PM

I just installed IE7 beta 3 on my XP machine. A very, very small annoyance, which I may get flamed for wasting everyone's time.

The desktop icon for IE has not updated. On other machines, it has. If you make a shortcut to the IE desktop icon, I know you can change it then. All the url shortcuts and other IE shortcuts have the right icon. Just the desktop icon is showing the old IE6.

Any suggestions for this minor inconvienience?

Three options...

1.) Click here to download Microsoft's TweakUI. Once installed and running select Repair, select ''rebuild icons'' from the drop-down menu, then click ''Repair Now.'' This may or may not work.

2.) Go Start->Run->regedit to launch the Registry Editor. Then expand the registry to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->Classes->CLSID->{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}->DefaultIcon. Once there, double-click the entry (Default) and edit the file and position number to whatever you wish. This will work.

3.) Delete the standard IE icon from your desktop and then create a shortcut on your desktop to iexplore.exe in C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer. You can then change the icon for the shortcut to whatever you wish. You can also remove the 'shortcut arrow' on the icons by using TweakUI. It's not the same, but it's a simple way of adjusting the icon to your liking.

Hope this helps,
John

Changing the registry didn't do it. It seems to be getting the icon from shell32.dll, no matter what you put in the registry.

Try This

mrsubway, Try the following; Right click your Desktop, choose Properties, under the Desktop tab click the Customize Desktop button and under Desktop icons uncheck Internet Explorer, click OK/Apply/OK. Now you can create a new shortcut to Internet Explorer to your Desktop and it should show the correct icon.

Downloading tweakui fixed the IE7 icon.
