Hello,
I have read multiple reviews, Creative's documentation, and a bunch of other things, and I have yet to have this question answered. I know that it supports Divx and Xvid files, but can someone please explain to me how you get files on the Zen Vision W? My main reason in asking is I have a lot of TV shows that have been encoded 640 x 480 using the Xvid and Divx codes (AVI extension), so do I have to convert those to Creative Zen's codec before I can watch them or can I just drag and drop them (given that they are encoded correctly and supported) and not have to encode anything. This topic is kind of frusturating when looking into Portable Media Players, they never tell you that you're going to be spending hours converting all the videos you currently have into their special file format or whatnot. Also, does the Zen Vision W support playback of 640 x 480 AVI files encoded with DIVX or Xvid? I would like a Portable Media Player that supports the many files that I already have, and I don't want to convert them (which probably would take weeks or more). Does such a player exist? If you've read this far...thanks...and hope you can help!
...if you leave the files as .avi, some of the features may be disabled. That is, you may not be able to fast forward or rewind through the clips. I'm not sure if you can just drag-and-drop them onto the device--you may need to use Creative's software to transfer them (or Windows Media Player, but this app might start automatically transcoding for you during transfer, thus taking longer).
All Creative players include a piece of software called the Media ToolBox, which can make easy work of optimizing your video files for whichever player you have.
Even though conversion is not needed, I do need to use Creative's program to put them on the device, and thus it's going to convert them anyway? Personally, I wish there existed such a device that would allow me to just drag and drop the files I have without going through some "middle-man" program.
...automatically convert. WMP does. Creative has a few pieces of software: one is the Tool Box, which you can use for converting, and one is Media something, which is their jukebox and syncing software. I *think* you can also just drag-and-drop, but I don't remember (it's been a while). All I know for sure is that I got several .avi files onto a Vision, and that the fast forward function does not work on those files.
That was helpful.
Transferring Xvid or Divx files is easy. Just open up Media Explorer, locate the video and transfer. There should be no need to convert anything. If you have to, that software will tell you, and then you can convert it right there and have it transfer automatically. Honestly though it'll play just about every xvid/divx file you throw at it.
One common issue of compatibility that people overlook is they transfer divx files that have AC3 for sound. Since the ZVW does not support that, it has to be converted to MP3.
