Plasma at 6,000 feet

by GLarry1 - 10/13/06 4:25 PM

I know Plasma TVs have performance problems at altitude but I don't know the threshold.
Should I expect problems at 6,000 feet?

I'm looking at the Pioneer PDP-5070HD

Plasma TVs have performance problems at altitude

The problem is that the very tiny glass plasma tube will break from the reduced air pressure at high altuides.
Contact Pinoneer and ask THEM!!!! John

Humming noise?

http://ezinearticles.com/?Plasma-TVs:-To-Buy-or-Not-to-Buy&id=308097 notes another issue at high altitudes.

An unbalanced or grounded cable pair has a 60 Hz humm (from the power company ground) on it.

You need manufacturers technical statements

by NM_Bill - 10/17/06 10:33 PM In reply to: Plasma at 6,000 feet by GLarry1

Not to take pot shots at the moderator's link which appears to be from the UK, but that statement didn't make any reference about the 6000 feet hum. I guess it wasn't from local information there as I don't recollect the British Isles having any of that degree of altitude. Too late for me to confirm that with ancestors.

I live just at a mile altitude. Up the road a piece in the highly affluent Santa Fe they're around 7000 feet - the highest state capital. Aren't those million dollar homes loaded with big plasmas? Someone with real world experience should chime in here.

Technological improvements have been ongoing. Three & a half years ago I was admittedly naive but got spooked at the prospect of plasma issues at one mile altitude, rightly or otherwise.

Recent threads here have cited major makers claims of design for higher altitude than we're talking about here.

I really suggest you contact the Pioneer technical department & guess you will get assurances from them. However one wouldn't expect anything more than their standard limited warranty.

If buying from a service oriented dealer, maybe confidence would be extended by their offer of a couple week or so audition of the equipment in your home.

Pioneers rated up to 9180 ft

by bevillan - 10/18/06 2:05 PM In reply to: Plasma at 6,000 feet by GLarry1

Pioneer bought out a company that made high altitude rated plasmas and all new pioneer plasma models incorporated the high altitude displays into their lines. Go with Pioneer and rest easy.

Uhh...

Why would you want a plasma screen up so high? I'm clueless.

No, really, there are plenty of ski resorts and mountain communities that like the plasma option.

umm.

People actually live in the mountains and being from Colorado I know plenty of people that live at high elevations...

Again, go with Pioneer they are tried and true at high elevations.
