The "other" distraction - intimacy

by cnye - 10/17/06 10:00 PM In reply to: Other by yorba

You know what the couple in the Lincoln Navigator were doing just before they were stopped by the cops in the movie "Crash". Now, is that a distraction, or what? Even less specific intimacies can be pretty distracting, which makes cell phone usage seem mild by comparison.

Being in a hurry.

by Erica Johnson - 10/17/06 4:25 PM In reply to: Besides cell phone use, what do you think distracts drivers? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

This wasn't listed, I think that this is a problem because people are always in a hurry. So, thinking about getting home or where they need to go distracts them.

What distracts drivers other than cell phones.

by Violite - 10/17/06 7:23 PM In reply to: All the above!!!!!!!! by krall6868

Yes, I have to add, not only cell phones are a distraction while driving. Everything in general are. Examples: Other drivers, pedestrians, animals, weather, road conditions(contruction) the street lights signals, changing radio stations, lighting a cigerette if smoke, frame of mind, if tired, upset, etc. I know some people who can't focus or consentrate to hold a conversation while driving. They are pretty tense and paranoid of the whole driving idea period. To many accidents or incidents of awful stories. Anyways, you have alot of things you prepare for, while driving. Being considerate of others. Driving offensively not defensively. To many road rage drivers out their that you be aware of too, as well. Thats all. Thanks... Violet

All the Above is a fair thing to say, especially.....

by lassean1 - 10/17/06 10:07 PM In reply to: All the above!!!!!!!! by krall6868

As I was saying especially in a world where texting is too slow for most. I wish people just thought of driving safe altogether. I get so nervous here in Las Vegas cause it is all go go go here. I what can you do though these forums sure aren't helping any. Why does this topic seem to keep making it's way to the surface. There are millions of topics other than spyware and cellular phones that we can talk about.

Narcissism

by John Artful - 10/17/06 4:38 PM In reply to: Besides cell phone use, what do you think distracts drivers? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

The most dangerous drivers on the road think the universe revolves around their car. This covers every catagory above. A total disregard for anything and everyone. Most bad accidents are the result of two of these types vying for the same space. I've witnessed this frequently. It's not road rage, it's road idiots.

Outlawing cel phone use while driving..

by RHATCH - 10/17/06 4:57 PM In reply to: Besides cell phone use, what do you think distracts drivers? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Yes in all cases whithout the additional "hands free" equipment. If people need to contact others while driving, they must be willing to invest in some form of hands free technology. The companies who make this type of equipment should be "refineing" the technology
to the point where it is totaly out of the "stratosphere." Before this technology was available the distrations included reading books , news papers and magazines, grooming oneself, etc. I have personaly witnessed" fatal accidents as the direct result of such distractions. I myself pull over to the side to make my calls. I do now have "blue tooth" technology and now use it all the time when I must drive. All automakers could make this technology available for under ahundred bucks as an option. They might consider making it standard equipment before the government makes it required equipment. then things can get really "costly" just like the $22000.00 dollar hammer.

Cell Phone Ban Enforcement

by Carl Spackler - 10/17/06 5:27 PM In reply to: Besides cell phone use, what do you think distracts drivers? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Before we get to the "shall we ban cell phones in cars" question. There needs to be some other issues addressed. Like, if they are banned, who will enforce this law?
There's certainly not enough police officers (who need to be addressing REAL crime) to enforce such a law. Have you looked around lately while driving?
EVERYONE talks on cell phones.

Trying to single out a particular violator for this would be like - and I'm quoting Martin Sheen from Apocalypse Now - "handing out speeding tickets at the Indy 500."

Do you really think local municipalities are going to want to shell the $$$$ it would take to hire additional manpower to enforce such a law?

I don't think so either . . . let's get real folks.
Cell phones are here to stay . . . cars included.

Car phones

by Derek R - 10/18/06 5:52 AM In reply to: Cell Phone Ban Enforcement by Carl Spackler

Using a mobile phone while driving is already illegal in Britian, result everyone ingnores the the ban and the police do nothing except continue to collect revenue from speed cameras. Ban smoking; ride a motor bike and have a lit cigerette butt end enter your crash helmet and you would understand why!!

Distractions are bad but why single out cell phones

by racleaver - 10/17/06 5:30 PM In reply to: Besides cell phone use, what do you think distracts drivers? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I agree cell phones that are not hands free are a distraction. HOWEVER, why single out cell phones as a major distraction that should be banned?

Truckers and others have used CB's on the road since they where small enough to fit into a vehicle and they are not even close to being hands free even today. Why hasn't anyone tried to ban them? They have been around longer that cell phones and the same conversations take place on them that take place on cell phones.

In the poll I fell all the listed items are in fact distractions of equal significance and there is no way to ban all of them. People will be distracted no matter what.

What needs to happen is people start using common sense in dealing with distractions and pull over if it starts affecting your driving.

I have been guilty of most of the listed distractions at one time or the other and take responsibility when it affects my driving.

That is my two cents worth.

(NT) All Of The Above

by iasthai22 - 10/17/06 5:44 PM In reply to: Besides cell phone use, what do you think distracts drivers? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

On any given day any of the above can be the greatest distraction. Driver training fails to teach us the technique of maintaining our main attention to what is happening outside our car and our own safety. We all need to learn to prioritize the distractions and to keep our main attention to our [and others'] safety. A kid wailing for attention for a few moments/minutes is infinitely better than wailing in pain [or worse].

Being emotionally upset

by Kensheehan - 10/17/06 5:53 PM In reply to: Besides cell phone use, what do you think distracts drivers? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Emotionally upset people are pretty rough on the road. I was driving north on a heavenly traveled street. I notice a woman driver in an SUV behind me. With the windows rolled up I could hear her yelling at the traffic. As I looked in the rear view mirror I could see her throwing a fit. As we drove up the road, I stayed in the right lane, she kept going from lane to lane trying to get ahead. This went on for three miles. By the time we got to a major intersection she was 5 car lengths behind me in the left lane still throwing a fit. This was an accident waiting to happen. She would weave in and out of traffic cutting others off and tailgating. People should not drive in that condition. Not only are they a danger to themselves they are a hazard to others. I would rather have someone behind me talking on a phone than throwing a fit and driving dangerously. That's my two cents.
