IE 6, SP2 re-install question on XP Pro

by Grandewd - 10/16/06 12:00 PM

IE 6 refuses to stay ''associated'' with .html files and has a couple of other problems also.

Microsoft's support site says re-install SP2 in order to ''repair'' IE 6.

What they fail to say is whether or not to ''un-install'' SP2 before re-applying it.

Do any of you know if I should un-install my (apparently corrupted) SP2 before re-installing it?

any advice appreciated

install

You should be able to install SP2 over the existing SP2 install no problem. That said, a system restore should be sufficient enough. Take your system back to the day before this issue started, if that's possible.

I hope this helps.

Repairing IE6 on Windows XP SP2

You can effectively install Service Pack 2 over the top of the previous version.. It is best done with the manual installer from either the Service Pack 2 CD from Microsoft or by downloading, then running the full SP2 installer from the link below. (It's a large download, about 260 MB so make sure you've got a broadband connection. After downloading, I burn a CD with the file so I can use it at a later time if necessary.):

Hope this helps.

Does the IE repair procedure work?

(Browse to the inf folder in the windows folder,) Locate the IE setup file-right click and select install, have you cd ready or know where the i386 folder is for the install to run correctly. Then if IE works correctly, open regedit to the HK classes root, then down to the .html first occurence- verify the persistent handler is {eec97550-47a9-11cf-b952-00aa0051fe20}. Close Regedit, use ie for a while until it's broken then check the key again- if the persistent handler is changed, start doing the detective on what the new handler is and why it wants to burgle your IE.
