Windows Vista Virtual PC install problem

by Gnug222 - 10/9/06 10:49 AM

I am using Virtual PC 2004 and am trying to install Windows Vista, but when I push "Install Now" it brings up the "please wait" screen and then tells me that I am not using enough RAM (I'm using 240 MB) but the program only lets you use up to 448, and if I go over 259 MB, the machine won't run. Does anybody have any suggestions to fix this?

How much RAM do you have?

When you use run a virtual machine your computer must meet the requirements of both operating systems. For instance, Windows XP needs 128MB RAM and Vista needs 512MB, so you'd need at least 640MB for basic performance. With those numbers I'm wondering if you have enough RAM to support essentially running 2 OSes, with emphasis on Vista, at once.

Let us know.

Not enough...

First, you're missing RAM somewhere...it should be 512MB, 576MB, 608MB, 640MB, etc. It's most likely used by integrated graphics but the fact that it's reporting an odd number is still strange.

Anyway, you don't have enough RAM to support XP and Vista's requirements at the same time...you should have 640MB at the bare minimum, and preferably 1GB. You could install Vista in a dual-boot setup and alternate between the two but you won't get far with running it in a virtual machine.

thanks for your help, but I realized that I had another computer with 1GB of RAM. I installed Vista on a VM using VMWare server. In the future maybe around the holidays, I will get my Dell I6000 2GBs of RAM and a new 80GB hard drive. Although, by then Windows Vista RC2 (no, I am no Microsoft VIP or "technology enthusiast, I was just in the right place at the right time.) will be long outdated by then and there will be RC3 or it will only have 3-4 months to survive until it expires.
