IIRC, Anu Kirk stated (about 5 minutes into the episode) that Rhapsody was the "only music download service in addition to iTunes that will allow you to purchase music and play it on an iPod."
What about non-DRM services like audiolunchbox and emusic? They do exactly that!
Unless I'm misunderstanding his statement, I can't believe that James and V didn't call BS!
earlier in my meeting with him, I brought up emusic et al., and clarified that he was referring to DRM content.
but yes, this is a great observation-- you can still purchase or "subscribe" to legal downloads for the iPod using non-DRM content.
Can you explain how they are creating protected music for an iPod withOUT using Apple's Fairplay? I thought that only Apple could encode DRM'd music that will play on an iPod because the iPod only decrypts Apple's own DRM. What gives?
Remember about a year and a half ago when Apple accused Real of 'hacking' the iPod? This is what they were doing - they figured out a way to take their Helix DRM tracks and make them look and act like Apple Fairplay tracks, so they would play on the iPod. Both Rhapsody and Real Player has supported transferring purchased music to iPod for the last year, at least.
