I recently bought a brand new laptop. I keep the laptop in my attic where my room is and put my old desktop down 2 stories on the main floor of my house. I was wondering if I could possibly connect to my ISP with both of my computers at the same time. How would I go about that? Also, is there a way I can use my wireless router to connect both computers wirelessly to my dial-up connection? Please give me insight to these questions. Thanks!
What you would need is a proxy server. You can get a free proxy server at www.analogx.com.
You would then have your main computer connect to the internet (if I am not mistaken, you could automate this, but it isn't very reliable). You would install the proxy server on the main machine and run it.
Then on your other computer(s), you would just set up the proxy connection in your internet browser by following the instructions included in the analogx proxy software download.
You can accomplish this either by use of software or hardware.
A software solution will vary depending on your operating system (OS) Windows, Mac OS, Linux, etc.. Later versions of windows Win98 and newer have ''Internet Connection Sharing'' built in. This solution also means that one of the computers will always have to be on for any computer to use the internet.
Hardware solutions will also vary, but a popular method is a dialup router; which would require your computers to have a ethernet connection and generally also need a external modem. When our company first began using the internet, I setup a dialup router that allowed the entire network to have access using a single dialup account. I used a Trendnet Web Cruiser TW-100. Trendnet as discontinued the entire line of products, but you may be able to get a closeout deal. You should also be able to find a broadband router that offers dialup fallback, that can likely be configured to work dialup only.
I might quess this the answer..
If you want to maintain two PC Desktops..they must be in close proximity--useing a KVM Switch..you can RUN two TOWERS useing a Single Keyboard and a Single Monitor..
For the Internet..Security Software allows you to use only ONE PC at a time useing your SAME Subscription..you can not run two PC's that contain the same Security Software..so two PC's running simultainously--each need a Account..
..
Wireless is DSL High Speed..
I run two Desktops/two modems/a single Telephone Line-out..One Monitor..One Keyboard..only one Internet Connection at a time..but its dial-up..thats KVM Switch..
..
I don't know what else to offer.
