RE: TECH HELP WITH VONAGE OR ANY OTHER VOIP

by indian1970 - 10/3/06 12:50 AM

I have a ad in a newspaper for rentals. I use a vonage number to forward all calls from the ad to my cell phone. People from the ad call 7729333 and it rings to my 8939393 number on my cell. If I travel overseas to india or pakistan will I be able to forward the772 number to my cellphone overseas. I probably will get a international number for my cell phone when I get there. Or does forwarding only work within the U.S. with U.S. numbers. Or are there any other alternatives. Perhaps I can take my vonage phone adapter and hook it up overseas and people who dail the ad number will maybe be able to get a hold of me through just the vonage number. So then I won't need to forward it to my cell phone. Will my vonage adapter even work overseas and will I need any special adapters. Vonage reps seem to have no clue as to wheter it will work or not. Maybe theres another route to recieving and making free calls from land lines. I know if I call from the vonage adapter I will surely dail into the U.S. for free, however, will my customers using landlines be able to get a hold of me while I am in india or pakistan/ . need help. thanks

1) Yes I have been succesful sending to a cell phone overseas. You may have to adjust the ring time to a longer setting since the swtching time may be longer to get the ring on you cell overseas.
2) I have also taken my adaptor with me on international trips and had good success. However the particular broadband connection may be an issue. For me it worked form Europe, Chana and Japan at the hotels I used. This is cheaper thatn receiving cell phone calls overseas. YOu may want a router as well if you plan to hool up your PC.
3) Softphone adaptor or USB softphone are available so you can use a PC as a VOIP phone. Bring a headset that will plug into your mike/speaker plugs for the softphone.
