Good points, so do you agree that 1080P hype is overblown.
I mean, ultimately if you are viewing on a tyical human sized big screen of say 50" or less which I think most folks still are, do you realy think 1080P is making a real noticable difference over 1080I, or is it mainly hype being promoted by electronics manufatures in hopes of selling new HD sets to the early adopters that have to have the "latest and greatest". Thanks.
blueray DVD is pretty much the only content right now for 1080p. yes in the future their will be broadcast in 1080p but we have a ways to go.
Let's look at the 1080p issue from the standpoint of a game developer. Do I want to spend a ton of extra money to provide my customers with 1080p native games over 720p/1080i games? NO since less than 20% of TV owners in the US are HDTV owners and maybe 5% (over estimate) are native 1080p HDTV owners.
Developers are going to use the BR discs to store longer cutscenes and compress their games less than they have to on DVD, but only a handful of developers are actually going to make games that output in true native 1080p. They can save alot more time and money by making the max output 1080i and letting all these high-end 1080p TVs just deinterlace the signals internally to 1080p with very minimal quality loss due to the digital signal supplied by HDMI.
And guess what? Even 1080i over analog (component) looks great in deinterlaced 1080p (theoretically it is worse than via a digital signal, but to the human eye there is almost no difference).
1080p is all smoke and mirrors in regard to video games. Less than 10% of all game developers will be making games that output in 1080p due to the shear amount of storage space it wastes as well as extra development costs that it entails.
Movies are a whole other beast and native 1080p is ideal, but again, even though HD-DVD players only output up to 1080i, a good 1080p TV will deinterlace the digital signal with very very slight quality loss and will look like native 1080p.
"1080p is all smoke and mirrors in regard to video games. Less than 10% of all game developers will be making games that output in 1080p due to the shear amount of storage space it wastes as well as extra development costs that it entails"
Amen to that!!
The 360 is no longer going to support 1080p through component video. It will now support only 1080i through that and it will support 1080p through VGA. This has nothing to do with televisions (although it is true that most TVs do not support input of 1080p through analog).
Do you have a link to that info?
I would love to drop that bomb on the Official Xbox 360 forums bc 80% of the people on there think native 1080p via component is a Godsend. I keep telling them that 99% of 1080p TVs do not support native 1080p via component because the TV manufacturers want HDMI to be the next industry standard since it is digital and able to implement the ICT restrictions on. Then they bring up VGA which will be able to do 1080p, but again, TV manufacturers are phasing out VGA to make HDMI the standard since it is digital and VGA is analog. My brand new 1080p Sony TV has VGA but has a low resolution for it, thus making it worthless. Other manufacturers are following suit with the VGA down-rezzing.
Ok people, im gonna lay of the wii for a bit and bash the ps3.
Downsides to the ps3. Everybody knows the psp has unresonable loading times... well, it lookes like the ps3 will follow in its footsteps. The drive is only 1x (most pc's have a minimum of 4x) and thats really slow. I have read online that many people have been complaining that thir blu ray dvd players have taking 10 minuites to load a movie. Plus, lets not forget sony's laser issues. For 600 bucks i hope it dosnt happen. If you think the 360 has overheating problems, wait for the ps3. Ive seen a thermal image of the Cell and it has a greater thermal output than the 360 does. Now thats saying something. Also, Ive heard rumors that the Cell is very hard to program for.
Second, Tilt function. What does this remind you of... oh yea the wii. Nuff said people that is a horrible copy (sony couldnt even get that right). The tilt and wii motion sensing thingy arnt really enhancing the gameplay. Those ideas are going to end up like the DS touch screen. It will be exciting for about 2 days and then itll be "oh yea, the motion sensing (or tilt function), its ok i guess."
Third, games. Except Resistance fall of man, warhawk, and COD 3 (cough copy cough), there are no real must have titles. Yep. Sony cant come up with any good games for the ps3 so what do they do, copy 360 games. COD 3 was supposed to be an exclusive title for the 360. Now nintendo has its fair shair of copying 360 games too. Since very few games for the wii are worth getting excited about, they copied COD 3, Blazing angels, Far Cry, and splinter cell double agent. Not only this, all those games were supposed to be third party exclusives for the 360. Nintendo also calls this "good 3rd pary support". Well, I dont know about any of you, but I dont think copying games is good third party support. If nintendo dosnt get some interesting games on the wii, its sure to fail within the first year.
The PSP is one of the biggest let downs in consumer electronics history, and I fear the PS3 will be no better. Long load times, lack of real innovation, horrible price point, thats Sony's game these days.
Now, saying the touch screen interface on the DS is only interesting for two days is just silly. Millions of people are playing games on the DS, and frankly its so much better as a portable system than the PSP is its not even close. It just offers gamers soooo much more, firstly interesting new gameplay designs due to the design of the unit itself. Two individual screens a touch interface, a mic to blow into, these things may seem trivial, but they have offered me the chance to game in a whole new way, and Millions of people agree there.
Also, both the Wii and the DS are seeing much better thrid party support than in the past. On DS games there are just way too many third party origionals to get into here, but on the Wii, Red Steel for one, Tony Hawk Downhill Jam for another (and no, thats not a THPS 8 rip off), Trauma Center, Dragon Quest, Elebits, Bleach, Super Swing Golf, and Wings Island are all Wii origionals, not ports designed to work with the controler, 100% original thrid party efforts, and I am cetaint there will be many more where that came from. Its not a bad list for a console that is not out yet.
If the DS is any clue, the design of the Wii with its new controler interface should be a huge hit. I would not discount what Nintendo is trying to do as a gimmick or fad, its realy innovation.
PSP washt THAT big of a letdown. It has some pretty good games for it too. At least not as big a letdown as the pocketstation.
What I mean that its interesting for 2 days is that it was like "OH WOW" when it came out, and as you got use to it, you didnt notice it much and it became less fun if you know what i mean.
The Wii would have a lot more 3rd party suport if it wornt for the gamecube. That lost a lot of developers. If the wii had come along last gen, I would have considered it a worhty competitor, but for next gen- it is a real letdown. All new technologies have problems. This motion sensing is sure to be no exeption. I have learned this from experience and this situation is going to be no different.
The 2 companies that have everthing to lose this gen are sony and nintendo. If eigther of them slip up, that company is done.
PSP was a big let down, 4 PSP sold to every 10 DS sold, everyones PSP is collectiong dust.
Nintendo isn't going to come along the next gen, it is going to create it's own gen. Nintendo doesn't have much to lose either. PS3 does look amazing but im not going to pay $600 dollars for something that looks shinny.
Nintendo does have everything riding on the wii. If it fails, nintendo will go bankrupt.
If Sega and SNK can live on after huge hardware market failures by changing thier buisness model, Nintendo will be just fine. Im sure they could run that company another few years just on Gameboy and DS sales alone. If the Wii bombs Nintendo will live to tell about it. I think the Wii is a near sure thing though.
I just watched an episode of xplay and they talked to the nintendo representative in the us and he said that there will be no online play out of the box for the wii (thats what you get for only 250 bucks). It is also not available at launch. It will be released sometime in 07. So much for nintendos promises for online play. God forbid youll have to pay extra for it.
Nintendo has said that Wii Connect 24 is a free service, which is a huge step in the right direction. They will make plenty of money on virtual console downloads, so giving away the Wii channels, and ultimately online play should be a no brainer. I have read that the next Pokemon battle game will be the first big online title on 07. I agree, it would have been nice to have Madden, and COD3 online out of the box, but as with the DS online, I think Nintendo will prove free online multiplayer is worth the wait.
Online services are pretty expensive to keep up, like xbox live. How many games do you think they are hosting right now? All those games have to connect to a server, user that servers preocessing and RAM resources. That is expensive. In nintendos current financial state, how long do you think theyll keep wiiconect24 free. Theyll probably start charging outragious price for it and not make it better. Plus, you can play games on it and... nothing! On xbox live you can chat, download demos, watch press conferences (and other videos), and tons more. By the way it also plays games.
The DS online service left alot to be desired. Dont get me wrong, its not bad. Its just a bit too slow for my likeing. The ds online service dosnt need nearly as much server resources as live games do, because ds games are sort of low tech compared to live games. You can probably run a lot of ds games for the ammount it takes to run a live game.
In coclusion, free online service is good in theory, nut not in real life.
