the apple ipod is overrated as a toy
apple is just like any other co, rework and reissue old idea
even as ther blast other co for ther old idea
i own a 4th gen ipod and my boyfriend has a 2nd gen which is his baby. he will never part with it. but we will both be getting the new 5th gen soon.
I don't have an ipod I have a palm pilot (pam TE)
I have 512 megs of memory for songs and I could fit all of my music on 8 gigs of space and still not have enough timt to listen to it. I'll save my money for a better gadget. My laptop is my ipod.
I have the 60GB Fifth Generation. I'm pretty happy with it. I'm not putting in money in for an 80GB, but I wish Apple would offer us regular users a software update that allowed searching.
Going to wait for the newer iPod (The anticipated one) and if that's not good, I might just strip the DRM off all my iTunes music (Yes I pay for music) and move to Creative or something.
I have a 4G 40GB Ipod that I can't wait to get rid of. At the time of purchase, my only other option was the 40GB Zen Xtra--it was actually my first choice. However, I found the Xtra to be too utterly hideous and fell in love with the Ipod's design.
That's what I get for being shallow and ignoring the research I had done. Now I have a completely unreliable and uncompatable product.
I'm trying to decide between a 60GB Creative Zen Vision:M or a 60GB Vision:W (whenever they come out). I am also looking into the 80GB Archos 504. I would love, more than anything, to have a 60-100GB Cowon A2.
I prefer OTHER devices. namely the Sandisk Sansa. only thing I've done to mine since getting it was upgrade the ear-buds after I accidentally washed the ones that came with the player.
Too expensive and difficult to install music without a price. Nice features, large storage capacity and can play movies...nice, but pricey.
Luxury is okay, but having a format that is easier to
download or copy to playback without the expense is nice too.
Um... where do I begin. I'll start with, you’re lying. iPods are Expensive yes, but so are all MP3 players. (and cell phones, and anything else that electronic) That's nothing new. But iPod being hard to use... You have got to be kidding. Drag and drop, that couldn't BE more easy. If iTunes/iPods were hard to use, Apple wouldn't have 70% of the market!!!
I own 2 iRiver’s and an iPod. The iRiver H-140 and H340 kick Apple's ass 3 years running. They both did everything 10 better than the Apple, including recording audio WAVE files at 320. (Try and find that ANYWHERE NOW! – thanks RIAA) Now iPod has video, and it's SO simple to use, no more converting for hours at a time, and using the banned Korean firmware. Just slap the video into iTunes and I’ll know if it will work or not before you get it onto the player.
You don't have to buy ONE song/video from iTunes to use the software. I don't -- I have CDs and other means to get music. The iTunes software is NOT as good as WinAMP (it doesn’t play OGG, flac), but it’s amazing at organizing music – which WinAMP cannot do. NO other company/MP3 player can reproduce software to create on-the-go playlist – NO ONE!!! Just iPod. Believe me, that’s a HUGE selling point.
So when people say, "I don't own one, bluh bluh bluh" -- that's crap. I said the very same thing – until the NANO’s came out. iPod is popular for reason. It makes MORE sense if you don't have the life-style to have an MP3 player on you all the time. (ie Living in the city, travel a lot) Then I'd believe you.
Just got this after a long time deciding. What sold me was the convenience of putting my favorite cds (and shuffling the tunes) and photos (and enjoying random slideshow) on to one little appliance. No problems so far, and sound quality is very satisfactory on mini speakers. Decided against the video because I hear Apple plans to push their movie downloads and I'll steer clear of that.
When I voted, 50% of the votes were from people who don't own an iPod. Does this mean that the iPod is declining in popularity and sales? Are other companies and their players stepping up their quality and advertising? Or does it simply mean that real technology-savvy consumers don't buy iPods (for whatever the reason)? If the latter is true, I think we have another discussion/forum on our hands (and possibly another potential poll)?
Hey CNET, how about a survey to categorize your average reader(s)?
I agree that this is the wrong forum to ask this question. For the most part, only techie readers are here and participate in the discussions. The iPod is a cool gadget for non-techies (and a lot of kids) - hence, you will not find many iPod owners here, and thus the poll results will be skewed toward the non-iPod owners.
Since when are techie and music lover mutually exclusive conditions? I feel like I am a techie, but still love to listen to a wide variety of music. It also helps to shut out the noise that is going on in a lot of places where I am at.
They are not mutually exclusive.
The point I am trying to make is that most people that are here on CNET have some technical smarts. Or at least they are looking for technical information.
Most people who own iPods are kids wanting a status symbol. You won't find most of them here on CNET. Thus, the reason for the skewed poll results. The poll is being put to the wrong audience.
If I am not mistaken, I believe Apple has about 80% of the digital audio player market. Yet, this poll does not reflect this at all.. in fact, quite the contrary.
A better place to ask this poll would be a school yard.
Just because the Zen series are not the "iPods", means that they are #2 sellers, just because of that fact. But, this recognizes that the Zen series is the technologically superior players.
