iPod Discussion

by gregeather - 10/4/06 4:57 AM In reply to: What kind of Apple iPod do you own? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I don't own an ipod because of the slightly high price tag at the time. But about a month ago I bought an mp3 player for $40.00AUS in a local shop and have little trouble with it since the date of purchase.
I still look at the iPod's to buy one and I'm sure if I had the funs a iPod Nano would be the way I would go.

Multiple iPods

by peterlilly - 10/4/06 5:08 AM In reply to: What kind of Apple iPod do you own? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I have 4 iPods in my home at present. We first purchased an iPod mini just a month or so before the Nano came out. I have always had bad timing. We then purchased a 20GB with HP for my son. We next purchased a Nano and finally a 30GB video. The 20GB got a virus and stopped working properly before a year was up. HP was very good about trying to help us fix it and eventually replaced it, but my son promptly broke the screen. It still works, but there is no display so he wants a new one. The Mini just stopped working and is out of warranty because it is more than a year old. The Nano and the 30GB seem to be working fine. My only ''beefs'' with Apple are that I expect a superior product that will last. It seems that to even ask a question of Apple after something is out of warranty will cost me money. With the price you pay, you shouldn't have to pay additional amounts for extended warranties, etc. I am paying for quality. If I want a disposible product, I may consider the many cheaper MP3 players out there.

Shuffle only because it was free.

by SpamFighter - 10/4/06 5:17 AM In reply to: What kind of Apple iPod do you own? by Marc Bennett Moderator

A friend won it at an office party & didn't know what it was - only that it connected to a computer, so he gave it to me since I'm always tinkering on computers.

It's ok - I don't care for the shuffle feature at all. But if I was going to spend my money one an mp3 &/or video player, it probably wouldn't be an ipod. I despise proprietary formats and much prefer something more generic, like mp3. Plus ipod software too commercialish for me - everything is about buy, buy, buy! Difficult to find good info on uploading from your own collection. With all you have to spend on them, Apple should be giving them away free to sell all their music & other services.

Music on the go

by Jerry2617 - 10/4/06 7:21 AM In reply to: What kind of Apple iPod do you own? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I had a Rio Chiba, worked fine, but I never liked WMP. Converted to Mac and although the Chiba was supposed to covert with me I could just never get it to work on my Mac. Firmware updates, the whole thing, nothing worked, and eventually decided it a waste of time. iTunes I found more user friendly than WMP, and since I just listen to music on the go with the mp3 the Shuffle suited me fine-1st generation. After some time I found out about podcasts adding them to my playlist. The Shuffle gets great battery time, takes a knocking, but I have to admit that the earbuds are lacking. My old Chiba came with around-the-ear buds, far superior than your generic iPod earbuds, and they're black. From a music listening perspective the Shuffle suits my purpose perfectly-couldn't be happier.

no iPod

by jomamma1 - 10/4/06 8:08 AM In reply to: What kind of Apple iPod do you own? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I don't have an iPod and will not own one. I use a couple of different brands that allow me complete control and do not force me to use any particular software to load music.

Apple is doing it again

by medicinman - 10/4/06 8:18 AM In reply to: What kind of Apple iPod do you own? by Marc Bennett Moderator

As with their computer, Apple is making the same mistakes again - and the results will be the same as well. 1) They invent a new product which is wonderful 2) They make the new product beautiful, reliable, and solid 3) They allow greed to govern their business plan and try to make everything proprietary - thinking that by having a quality product everyone will choose their product despite the high price and restrictions on "software" (i.e. iTunes etc.) 4) They make the mistake of thinking they are in the "hardware" business and that it is the machine that people want - rather than the content - regardless of the machine - even if the machine is beautiful and reliable. I predict they will go from having 90% of the market to 5-10% of the market just as they did with the personal computer. It's a tragedy that because of their greed (high prices) and stupidity (thinking people want the machine rather than the content the machine provides)we will AGAIN have to settle for sub-standard technology because Apple's prices are just too high. I purchased Creative Zen MP3 player with FM radio, audio recorder, FM recorder and 8 GB of space for a fraction of the cost of an iPOD and I can use any music or audio files I want. AND the player is (I think) very close to the level of quality in any of the Apple products.

sony k750i

by killy_321 - 10/4/06 8:47 AM In reply to: What kind of Apple iPod do you own? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Admittedly I have not listened to an iPod as I know of no one at all with one amongst my friends, but after hearing music from many different portable sources I am delighted that the sound from my sony k750i phone with headphones is better than anything I have heard so far. With its 1 gigabyte memory card bought from ebay I have 10 cds and many photo's from the built in camera a speaker loud enough to entertain others in a moderate sized room and the ability to call people as well. MP3 lisening time is absolutely huge as a backpacking trip round europe taught me. Why would I want an iPod when my phone has far more functionality, was got for free with a super cheap vodaphone contract and with the only compramise being on total storage space? (easily fixed with another bigger memory card.)

Maybe I'll get one now that...

by miwi98 - 10/4/06 9:03 AM In reply to: What kind of Apple iPod do you own? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Maybe I'll get one now that they have improved the battery life for the Nano. My Qusest will be is to figure out if the merchant is selling me the new and improved Nano or selling me the old Nano that has such bad battery life.

What a gamble, eh?

haha

by marcelomdsc - 10/4/06 9:43 AM In reply to: What kind of Apple iPod do you own? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I found it very funny when I saw the chart, %52 of the people didnt have an ipod, so what the hell are they doing trying so hard to warn people from getting one or the ipod "fans" that say "ipod ROCKS!" haha it is just hilarious.
I've been reading and people is literaly fighting about it, but most dont own one......mmmm........i wonder......

In my case I'm not an apple fan but I like mac's altough I am a pc user, and I was trying to decide on what mp3 player to get. I ended up getting the new nano, maybe to soon.....because there s not enough accessories for it, at least what I would spect from apple.
I got my nano last friday, I had to get it replaced, yestarday (tuesday), because the center button didnt quite work and it froze a couple of times (even after the software update), finally yesterday it stop working, I got a new one and it s working very well.

So........EVEN IF YOU HAVE AN IPOD....dont be going arround the internet argueing about something that doesnt make sense, when I get into a forum about ipod I feel like there s people argueing about a football game they didnt see!!!!
I think we have a new sport coming up...................get a life!!!

iPod is the new Microsoft!

by bertmg - 10/4/06 1:32 PM In reply to: What kind of Apple iPod do you own? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Yes I am a Mac fan, waiting untill January Mac announcements for either a good iPod or get something else. I recognize when my beloved Apple screws us up (not everything pretty and sparkly is good). Although iPod is the more obvious example and there are others, here is what I see happening.

1. iPods claim to have the largest market share. sure, they where the first to mass produce and offer true legal music downloads at an afordable price. Back then it was a ''solution'' and the masses love it and purchase it.

2. Now the masses are stuck with a ''pretty looking'' aparatus that plays mp3 and a non standard format used to purchase and play music ''only'' from Apple.

3. The market since then has come up with cheaper, smaller machines with more features (bigger screens, radio and interchangeable flash memory. But Unfortunatelly, because of the lack of standardization, although they play mp3s, to really work as intended, they require another "non-standard" format.

Conlusion: now we have the market populated, or better yet ''stuck'', with a machine that is not the best anymore and plays best with a ''apple'' only format.

If you change the words ''machine'' for ''OS'' and ''Apple'' for ''Microsoft'' of this las parragraph you'd see what I am talking about:

Conclusion: ''So now we have the market populated, or better yet ''stuck'', with an OS that is not the best anymore and plays best with ''Microsoft'' only format.

- for Apple to convince the ''smarter'' public that they are still on the consummers side and that they do THINK DIFFERENT, for the same current price the new iPod would have to have a bigger screen, radio, changeable batteries, flash memory and they have to OPEN THEIR FORMAT for everyone!!!

Additionally, to prepare for the future iTV should include a cradle to place the iPod!!!

PS: I know the iPhone is on the way, but I think we would all still purchase and iPod with no phone capabilities. iPhone is way to much into the early stage for the "smart" public to fall for it. If you check Motorola's apple players did not do well!
got you thinking?

iPod?! Don't have one, don't need one, and don't want one!

by farhansyed - 10/4/06 2:29 PM In reply to: What kind of Apple iPod do you own? by Marc Bennett Moderator

In my opinion, the iPod is an excellent example of what's wrong with this country.

It's a poorly made "throwaway" device with a non-removable battery that people buy because it's "cool". Of course the non-removable battery is not a problem because each time a new iPod comes out, the old ones aren't "cool" anymore, so it's time to "upgrade" anyways. And of course along with each new iPod that people buy to replace their "obsolete" or broken one, there's a need for a bunch of poorly made, grossly overpriced accessories.

The iPod isn't the best sounding MP3 player. It's certainly not the most durable and reliable MP3 player. It doesn't have a lot of features that competing models offer. And it's not even the easiest to use.

So why DO people buy it? Simple. The good old "follow the herd" mentality. "Everyone else has one, so therefore I need one." Never mind that it's not a good product, that it's grossly overpriced, and so on. After all, since everyone else has it, I need one too.

Of course once "too many" people have it, or something new comes out then suddenly it's not "cool" anymore so into the garbage it goes. So not only do we have the economic impact of millions of these devices becoming "obsolete" at the same time, now we also need to deal with the environmental cost of disposing of them.

So you might be wondering, what do I have? I use my discman when I want to listen to music on the go. It has an AM/FM radio (which iPod doesn't), it is shock resistant (which iPod isn't), and unlike the iPod I can remove and replace the battery as many times as I want. Of course I use rechargeable batteries to save money and help keep heavy metals out of the landfill.

In addition to all of these benefits, music sounds a lot better on a CD than on "lossy" MP3's or AAC files. And of course there's no "digital rights management" BS with CD's. I can make as many backup copies for my personal use as I want, such as one to listen to in my car.

Ahhh, you liiike iiiit

by monkeyhouse - 10/4/06 4:05 PM In reply to: iPod?! Don't have one, don't need one, and don't want one! by farhansyed

I agree there is a follow the herd mentality, but the iPod is a very good portable music device (I'm not convinced with the video yet). It being a 'must have' gadget only reflects on how well made, simple and effective to use it is, and is fuelled also by its great reviews. Though Apple really do milk the money out of the fan boys with their faster than average 'upgrades' and p*ss off those that have just bought one model for it to be out dated shortly afterwards. If you look at the iPod for what is rather than it's life story and the hooplah and BS surrounding it, then it really can't be knocked (except for additional cost of it being 'Apple' and the extortionate cost of accessories - $30 for 'socks'!?!).

I have a 4th Gen iPod from 2004, and it's everything I hoped and haven't felt the need to upgrade yet. I like having more than a CD's worth of music with me (especially useful for long trips) without the extra baggage additional CD's would take. It's probably at least half the size of a portable CD player so it will fit in my jeans pocket. Don't need to worry about battery life or carrying extra batteries with me. And if worst came to the worst, you can replace the battery without too much difficulty (if you're not a heavy handed cluts) or cost - mine is still going strong. Plenty of other devices contain native rechargeable batteries too; mobile phones, digital cameras... does that make them disposable? If the iPod gets jolted or dropped (I hope it's in a case), the music wont stop, pause or skip any. It's a shame there's no radio, but here in the US the radio's lame anyway so I don't miss it. When in the UK it's another story, but again, I have this device for MY music.

I'm not a fan of 'anti-establishment' views just because something is popular or does well. Knock the iPod for not meeting your needs, or really not living up to a standard it should reach, rather than it meeting a whole bunch of peoples needs, in turn being popular and so therefore not being cool for you. Some people do buy it because of what it is rather than what it can do for them, and that can effect some peoples judgement, but then you have to ask, do you really care what other people think?

No thanks, iPod is too restrictive.

by irisfailsafe - 10/4/06 2:51 PM In reply to: What kind of Apple iPod do you own? by Marc Bennett Moderator

When I was first looking at MP3 players, I looked at the second gen iPods. I looked at a lot more players and decided on an iRiver H320. It was less expensive because of discounts, iPods are all the same price everywhere you look, Apple controls the price. It had a better support group who found ways to "hack" it so I could watch full length videos I copied from DVDs I rent. RockBox is even better allowing me to create my own screens and fonts. I could use it as a voice recorder and it was an FM radio too!

The one big reason I didn't want the iPod was iTunes. A friend has an iPod and I watched her use iTunes. What an anal retentive company Apple is. I think they would control how you carry the iPod if they could. The iRiver can handle anything I throw at it and its easy to use, and I own my music, I don't "rent" it from Apple.
Enough, I'll stop now and enjoy all the money I saved by not having an iPod...

Shuffle

by jj96art - 10/4/06 3:19 PM In reply to: What kind of Apple iPod do you own? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I have the Shuffle that I only use for Audiobooks. I still prefer actually owning the CD vs buying from iTunes. Especially after a friend of mine purchased a lot of music from iTunes and then her computer crashed and she lost everything.
