Explaining Facebook for The BOL Crew

by dbthree - 9/28/06 12:38 PM

I figured I'd explain how Facebook works since it appears there's still a bit of confusion about the networking features.

Every profile on facebook is a member of a network, either a school, workplace, or region. You can be apart of multiple networks, but you must be in at least one.

You can see profiles of people within your network, by default (but can be hidden). You can search and find people in other networks under the default privacy controls, but, you cannot see their profile unless you add that person as a friend. You can then see profiles of your friends in other networks.

The new Facebook privacy controls allow for members who are with a College, High School, or Work network to limit who can search for you if someone is only affiliated with a region.

I hope that clears things up.

No Network

I have seen 1 person whos network was listed as "No Network". I had thought that it was going to be like you said that everyone will be in a network. Might this be something in the privacy settings that limit me from seeing what network they are in or just something weird.

opening it up creates a "no network" category

Based on my usage of facebook, since it's open to the public now, you can joing without a network. Also, the privacy controls can restrict who searches for you, even if they are within your network. You can restrict those in your network as well as those outside your network.

But overall, I feel facebook won't really be affected by the "opening." I mean, I didn't even realize that it was open for public use until I heard it on the podcast. There won't be any privacy issue as long as you can still remain private, which is currently the case. I mean, opening it up just allows those who aren't affiliated with any networks to search for users. It's not like they can view any profiles, pics, etc. Honestly, I don't think there will be any consequences.
