In addition to the fall update that will allow the 360 to internally up-scale to 1080p,
Microsoft is launching an HD-DVD add-on for the X360 in mid-November for $199. Obviously, Microsoft is making a serious move in the realm of 1080p, but without support for an HDMI connection.
This will leave many folks in a bit of a quandary. There are very few HDTVs that accept a 1080p signal through anything other than HDMI. The best signal that many of these 1080p displays are able to accept via analog connections is 1080i, which is de-interlaced by the HDTV's internal circuitry to convert it back to 1080p. This is essentially exactly what these displays would do when accepting 1080i from the 360 right now. It seems Xbox 360's new 1080p prowess may not amount to much in practice.
"This is the biggest waste of money you could ever do. 360 does not have HDMI support therfore it could never ever produce a true 1080p" man im glad I waited for ps3
360: will not last another 2 years technically wise>>>money not well spent.
ps3: will last well into the next decade. $600 dollars well spend.
Quite simply, why don't you think Microsoft will release a HDMI add-on output for the 360?
The other thing to consider is that the majority of the people that own either console don't have a HDTV, much less one that is 1080p, and it's not likely to be a substantial enough increase over the next two years to ensure market dominance anyway. You have to consider about half of these are being used by spoiled kids on a second TV because their parents are paranoid about burning an image into the screen. They could care less about HDMI, and even two years from now, most of them will still not care much, because even though many more have moved up to HD, the kid's TV will not be HD.
And no, I don't own either console. I stick to my PC (which I play in 1680x1050 on my 24" LCD monitor, not a crummy HDTV).
LCD do not have burn in issues.
Yeah good point everyone doesnt have HDTV 1080p right now, but I already do. SO just think in 1-2yrs think how many people will have a 1080p TV, Xbox does cannot support HDMI it doesnt even have a port to ever beable to do a tru HDMI. It may be able to upconvert but it will loose 60% of the benefit of HDMI. PS3 is future poof. I use PC also connected to a 46" lcd xbr 3 and its sweet.
You are correct in saying that almost all 1080p TVs do not accept native 1080p signals via component and that the 360, currently, does not support an HDMI cable. The 360 will, however, output native 1080p over VGA...but for alot of us (myself included) out 1080p TVs have less than stellar resolutions from our VGA connection and I believe this is because the industry is pushing HDMI as the next HD standard and wants to phase out VGA from TVs.
BUT almost all well made 1080p TVs deinterlace a 1080i signal to 1080p itself and looks just as good as a native 1080p signal (if the TV is well made). On my Sony SXRD it is very hard to tell a difference between native 1080p and deinterlaced 1080i (1080p). Basically all the TV has to do is show all the lines at once instead of alternating and that does not carry much video processing as say upconverting a 720p signal to 1080p.
So, if you have a 1080p TV you will be fine with the 360 1080p update and viewing 1080i via component until they can release an HDMI AV cable.
I would rather have HDMI due to the convenience, but my TV can deinterlace 1080i into 1080p without losing any noticable quality in the processing, so native 1080p does not really matter at this point.
At this point it you might not notice a big difference but just think down the road when more advanced game titles are created, having HDMI will really give you your moneys worth.
since high-def through component outputs is not subject to copy-protection, it makes perfect sense to stick with component outputs. going dvi/hdmi would require hdcp which would increase the cost even more.
as you said, most hdtvs can't accept a 1080p signal anyway, and broadcast high-def will be limited to 720p/1080i for the rest of this decade. and for most non-videophiles, 1080p via components will look fantastic.
