"messenger Service" says registry damaged

by janice - 2/25/06 6:34 PM

Just installed AVG on pentium III with windows 2000 and got a popup window telling me to go to www.registrycleanerxps.com to fix it. The window first showed when I tried to update AVG and when I tried to access Microsoft. Is this a valid message or an attempt to access my computer. jand

Dear Janice,

could you fix your problem?? I have the same (after installing AGV) . I though imediately to a spy, but AGV ewido anti-spyware did not fix the problem, which is very annoying.

it could be a spy, but AGV ewido anti-spy does not fix it

by velardi - 8/19/06 1:10 AM In reply to: That's spyware to me. by R. Proffitt Moderator

I have the same problem as Janice. It appears a pop up with the message:
STOP!! WINDOWS REQUIRES IMMEDIATE ATTENTION. Windows has found 55 critical system errors. TO FIX THE ERRORS PLEASE DO THE FOLLOWING:
1. download registry update from www.regfixit.comm
2. etc.

(of course I do not downloas anything)

The ewido AGV antypyware that I just uploaded (when just uploaded it is in its full version for one month, then if you don't buy, it turns to a limited demo version) DID NOT FIX the problem.

What do I do???????

Paola

That's a spyware popup.

The message is not from Windows but some adware/spyware that is still on the machine.

If EWIDO didn't eject it, move to more tools like HIJACKTHIS and HJT Forums to get rid of the advertisement that is pestering the machine.

It's A PopUp

I hate to tell you but "YOUR INFECTED" You can't just download an AntiSpy product after the fact. You "MUST" protect yourself before hand. Ewido is the best, easiest on recources I have ever used. Try Spyware Terminator. It's free and very effective. It has replaced Ad Aware SE for me. Also, It may be a virus. Try one or more of the free AV products AVG or Bit Defender. Also try AVG anti Root Kit. If none of these work, boot up your system in safe mode (F8) at start up. Log on as Adminastrator and do a system restore to 1 day prior to this trouble starting. I can almost guerantee that will work. Good Luck.... I've been there!

Don't worry, it's not

Read mine and Bob's post below. It's just popups that can be stopped easily, by a utility called Shoot the Messenger from www.grc.com.

Sorry but I must disagree.

The messenger service when you expose such to the internet does not result in infection or damage. You will however get SPAMMED with this message.

Please install a firewall before something bad happens and do disable this service.

No, I agree with Bob

Read Bob's post, it is not a Virus or Spyware or anything, it's just a daft spam service. I nipped it in the bud, like I'm suggesting to Jan, and that sorts it.

Other things too

It's just some script kiddie exploiting the messenger service to annoyances - no spyware included.

Turning it off does the trick (Google)

Its that useless messenger service; and you know it is because you have answered a question like this before with the correct answer: SHUT THIS SERVICE OFF OR DOWNLOAD STEVE GIBSON'S "SHOOT THE MESSENGER" APP.

Turn OFF this service. A common ploy to mess with owners.

by R. Proffitt Moderator - 8/19/06 12:34 PM In reply to: "messenger Service" says registry damaged by janice

http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/docs/messagepopup/ shows another such message that is spammed to owners through this service.

It can be turned off. However a firewall would also block this.
