So frustrating!

by nu2duo - 9/22/06 11:42 PM In reply to: 9/22/06 Solution for sending MP3s through wireless network to stereo by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Boy, George's great question had me thinking about my own search for a solution last year and how frustrated I was. Reading all the answers just brings back that same frustration:
1. DMRs are overkill for those of us who are satisfied to push content to our stereos. Also, they have their own content limitations. And I would prefer for someone to tell me how to hack the solution instead of paying for it.
2. Sure, nothing beats the fidelity of a wired system, but many of us have a laptop as a primary machine and like to roam around. Besides, with a laptop, you are less likely to need a DRM's remote, since the computer is everywhere with you anyway. Also, some of us have spouses who aren't keen to have a hot, ugly computer messing up the nice wood furniture inside which the stereo resides.
3. I haven't heard a good wireless speaker yet. Fine for listening to your computer beep, but not for music. There's a reason people want to push data to their stereo receiver and speakers. They invested in hardware that specializes in amplifying and playing sound with clarity, and they want to use it for that purpose. Who wants to invest $50 on a bad set of wireless speakers while their existing $1000+ stereo system sits idle? The question is how to get data to the stereo wirelessly with minimal loss. Like keeping it digital as far down the chain as possible.
4. FM? Pahleez. I live in a city, not in Greenland. Also, I'm not an audiophile (not pushing for the $2000+ solution), but it would be good to preserve SOME sound quality.
5. The Xbox thing sounds intruiging, and is almost a hack, since it's used. I may try this out.
6. Aarrghhh! Why is it that the Mac guys always figure out the basic need without making it overly complicated. Sure, Airport Express holds you hostage to itunes, which limits a bunch of functionality, but at least they get it.

Ultimately, I bought an Airport Express about 6 mo. ago and it works for mp3s, although I hate being married to itunes. I keep my music library current in another app, since that's what I use to sync with my portable mp3 player. I imagine most people who have mp3s on their computer occassionally do that, right? Darn you mac, you're not going to get me to buy an ipod just to keep me compatible with you!

Also, what if I want to stream a program or music from a website? Once your stereo is connected somehow on your wifi network, XP should have a way of recognizing it as your "external speaker", just as if you had plugged in a USB speaker. That way any application could send audio to it. I shouldn't have to rely on itunes.

The post about the Rogue Aomeba Airfoil is very interesting, I'm anxious to check it out to see if it works for web streaming content.

What I would have really like to have seen is
- an airport express-ish device
- with a digital output to the stero instead of RCA
- not married to one app like itunes
- selectable as an external speaker by XP (can't someone write a software hack for this for us illiterates?!)

Is that what Xbox essentially functions as?

Sending MP3's To Stereo

by wouldhe2 - 9/23/06 6:59 AM In reply to: 9/22/06 Solution for sending MP3s through wireless network to stereo by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Can any of these products be used to send surround sound to surround sound speakers. I am looking for a solution for getting my rear speakers to work without wires.

I'm sorry I don't understand

How exactly is listing a bunch of products considered "hacking" a personal solution?

Quoted from article: "this page is not about buying things. This page is about hacking a do-it-yourself wireless networked music player for less than half the cost of a retail model and potentially creating one with more features."

Then there is just a press release like listing of various off-the-shelf-solutions.

Should Have Mentioned TiVo

by chipcnet - 9/23/06 10:57 AM In reply to: 9/22/06 Solution for sending MP3s through wireless network to stereo by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Tivo Series II and III boxes offer this capability, using the Tivo remote and on-screen control with the TV screen.

It doesn't support WMA or M4P as of now but I use it all the time.

If you have a Tivo connecgted to your audio system it is hard to justify buying another solution.

Just get an FM transmitter

by batman1969 - 9/23/06 12:05 PM In reply to: 9/22/06 Solution for sending MP3s through wireless network to stereo by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Just get a FM transmitter. I have one plugged into the speaker output and it just sends a FM signal that the stereo can pick up. I have a Belkin Tunecast II. They're were basically made for car stereos to transmit a signal to the radio for people that didn't have a auxillary input or tape deck adapter. I have mine plugged right in to the computers speaker output, and powered by an adapter. It turns off when no sound is coming through for about 30 seconds, so it's not on all the time, for when you're using batteries for it. Anyhow, you can usually pick one up and Walmart or such for about 30-40 bucks. It broadcasts strong enough that I can pick up the signal through out my house from my living room, to the little boombox I have in the back bedroom for that "singing in the shower".

FM Transmitter

by BbTrumpet - 9/23/06 4:32 PM In reply to: 9/22/06 Solution for sending MP3s through wireless network to stereo by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Wouldn't one of those FM Transmitters for MP3 Players work ? My idea was to plug the FM Transmitter into the speaker jack of the PC and then tune in the signal on my stereo. I havn't done it yet but I was thinking about doing this a day or so before I read this Q & A Forum post

Re: FM transmitter

by k4kyv - 9/23/06 8:06 PM In reply to: FM Transmitter by BbTrumpet

Ramsey Electronics sells a stereo FM tranmitter in kit form for about $120, with a better range than the little battery-powered car stereo transmitters. It uses stable, synthesised frequency control that doesn't drift off the channel once it is set.

FM Transmitter Is Lossy!

by zanzzz - 9/23/06 10:37 PM In reply to: FM Transmitter by BbTrumpet

I see that many have recommended the use of FM transmitters. If you don't care about audio quality then go right ahead. FM reduces your pristine digital files to lossy (and lousy!) limited fidelity analog.
My solution was to use my old PC connected to my network near the entertainment center. It connects to the A/V receiver with digital mini plug and the TV with S video cable. I control the PC with a wireless key board and mouse. Not exactly elegant but it works. This set up would be better with an HD quality TV because my regular set looks grainy with the PC video feed. Now that Tivo can stream mp3's and jpgs I find myself using that more and more due to the simplicity but it is limited in flexibility.

Do you own an Xbox 360? If so, you can stream to it.

by burleyda - 9/24/06 5:21 AM In reply to: 9/22/06 Solution for sending MP3s through wireless network to stereo by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Another solution is if you own an Xbox 360 you can stream your music wherever the 360 is. I used to have a 100 disc changer, but now it is no longer needed. Media Edition allows you to see the album art/info displayed right on your t.v. Media Edition also allows you to stream video and pictures that are also stored on your computer.

How do you obtain media Edition?

by rarbar - 10/4/06 8:47 PM In reply to: Do you own an Xbox 360? If so, you can stream to it. by burleyda

I am running XP Pro. Will it provide same functions as media edition? How do you obtain functionality of media edition?

Thanks

No...

by John.Wilkinson Moderator - 10/4/06 8:56 PM In reply to: How do you obtain media Edition? by rarbar

Windows XP Professional lacks the Media Center functionality of Windows XP Media Center edition. If you want that addon you have to purchase an OEM copy of Windows XP media Center edition from a site such as Newegg.com. (Note that Microsoft has never created a retail version of it.)

Hope this helps,
John

Broadcasting mp3s to home stereo

by pquacker - 9/24/06 5:59 AM In reply to: 9/22/06 Solution for sending MP3s through wireless network to stereo by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

There is one more system available... (with a little hunting) the "KIMA" transmiter and receiver set. It works directly thru the speaker / headphone jack of the computer. Once properly set the sound quality is good. The range is decent. I have the system set up with wiring to convert the RCA type plugs to the small computer audio outlet. At the receiver end the same type wire coversion is used and is connected to a good set of computer speakers. This system provides no remote control but for the $50.00 price tag still a good choice.

Review of the D Link DSM 520

by o'riley - 9/24/06 6:35 AM In reply to: 9/22/06 Solution for sending MP3s through wireless network to stereo by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I just purchased this box and it is the most difficult to set up device that I have ever owned. I am not an novice and yet it took me three tries to get the box to see and talk with my wireless network. But go the life of me after trying all the suggestions dlink offered I still cannot get the box to find the server and therefore all my mucic and pics on my pc cannot be played. Online service is fine only for Rap none of the others work.

Sent Dlink teck support letter yesterday and if they don't have a soluation by next Tueday and the box is working then it is going back.

As of today with a lot computer experince under my belt I give this product a rating of POOR and surley not worth the money.

Say what???

by brucerobb - 9/24/06 3:18 PM In reply to: 9/22/06 Solution for sending MP3s through wireless network to stereo by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

In your "solution" to the question asked, you say, "Many companies have products for sale that fill this need, but this page is not about buying things. This page is about hacking a do-it-yourself wireless networked music player for less than half the cost of a retail model and potentially creating one with more features."

Then you go on to list four or five things TO BUY, and never a word about hacking a d-i-y solution "better than the retail" solutions. At least one of these products is SIX TIMES the price the questioner wants to spend.

And, given the first requirement the questioner specified, it doesn't look like he wants anything you have to offer.

Did Mr. Koo truncate your answer, or is that all you have to say on the subject?
